we're ranked 30th in the nfl in pass defense. i think lowery is gonna have a great career but our backfield is far from a no passing zone.
Mayo, Ellis, Rivers all picked after Gholston and are tearing it up. Face the facts fucktard that Jets got fleeced into taking Gholston because BB got into Mangini's head once again. So now you have a 60 million dollar project that may turn into something or may not. Either way at 6 it wasnt value.
Actually it was Mike Mayock who said that Gholston was a workout warrior and your right he was projected high, but as a defensive end, the olb label didnt come about till the draft order was determined and the jets were at 6
If you think the Jets are drafting because of something BB says or does than it's clear that you're way to far up his arse.
Here's my 2 cents, for what it's worth: While I understand that (1) he is making a transition from college to the pros; (2) is making a transition from a 4-3DE to a 3-4OLB; and (3) it is only 8 weeks of total play (pre-season included), there are things I don't think need to be taught or coached. No one is compaining (yet) that he's terrible in pass coverage. But the inability to shed a block, especially against non-elite tackles or fullbacks, for a guy who looks so phsycially imposing, had an incredible amount of reps at the combine, is disheartening. Also, for a guy who we all thought was lightning quick, from the upright position, he seems to take forever and a day to get to the QB. Yes, Mario Williams didn't look impressive in his first year and now seems pretty damn good. But he's a different player at a different position with a different skill set. I would LOVE to eat crow and watch Vernon blow up to be the best of the best. But in the preseason against 4th stringers who are now on practice squads he couldn't make an impact.
I can understand the frustration with wanting to see vernon play better than he has shown. We have seen players like drob and vilma either misused or not play up to drafted expetations. but vernon imo is different, he has power/burst and speed that few at his position have. I have seen this in spurts and its something i dont believe you can coach. He has the power of 300lb de's and thats a fact. He is not playing with speed right now and im sure many are unfairly judging him based on this. I am not a coach but i sure as hell could find better places to point the finger than this rookie. eric smith made a pick and that could set this d back because he is absolutely terrible and i have know idea how he is starting over elam. We should all focus our attention to getting sutton fired and lv the rooks alone.
No comparison at all cuz with miami at that time in the draft they needed a QB not a wide receiver at the time.. Get player GiNn is but with no one to throw u the ball stupid pick
champ, that would be to good to be true. Thats why there is no way its going to happen. then again i didnt think the brett thing was possible either.
Marvin Lewis runs a 4-3. It would be like hiring Ted Cottrell to run a 4-3 base but in reverse. Mangini wouldn't spend 3 years installing 3-4 personnel and then hire a 4-3 DC.
Gotta give him at least 2 full seasons. Huge transition from college to NFL...please see Mario Williams.
How are you sure? Has he run a 3-4 before? Has he ever been involved with any team that has? Knowing a defense and being able to design and train peopel to run it are two different things.
Boom or bust ? Time to develop or not ? I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a first round draft pick (except maybe a QB) to make a significant contribution to the team from day 1. They get paid too much to have the luxury of a gradual learning curve.
I am just happy that Thomas is playing well, meaning they don't have to force Gholston on the field before he is ready.
Me to. He had 4 or 5 tackles last game. Geez man, giving up after 4 weeks. You guys must have studied the tapes real close
Also remember that Thomas really regressed last year, but has been playing very well so far this year. The coaches were looking for Thomas' replacement in Gholston but so far Thomas has been fighting him off. It's not exactly a bad position we're in to have someone really pick it up to keep his job. And if they bring Gholston along slowly and he eventually gets it, then we'll have Thomas, Pace, Gholston, and even Bowens as four capable pass rushers. Not a bad position to be in at all.
