i will be the first to admit it that after the charger disgrace i had the jets heading into 6-10 land with the prozac on hand...... its so easy to arm chair things but i needed to see a trend appear and make me a bit more confident with this "expensive" group of players... 34 points in 1 half was great - now the cardinals are not the 07 giants on D but they are an NFL defense - and 34 points on anyone is an accomplishment. the jets need to decide right here right now what style they will bring to the table the remaining 12 games. may i suggest a PASS FIRST, RUN SECOND philosophy. we have people who can catch the rock and a QB with a bionic arm which we are likely renting for 1 year. lets take advantage and sling it around with the best of them.... the defense will get better but that will not be good enough for the jets. it will still prevent the jets from getting to january so the team will live and die with the offense. its an opp for the jets to create a philosophy that is offense, offense and more offense and stick to it - even after favre leaves. 6-10 is still a possibility but 85 pts in 2 games will definitely keep some def coordinators awake on saturdays and create some excitement for this team. jil
i'm more worried about the d to be honest. they learned how to stop the run, but that made them forget how to play the pass. i dont know it crazy, but at least the bye week is coming up so they can straighten some stuff out.
I believe the defense will get much better.... why..? 1. We stop the run extremely well-when you stop the run, you make an offense one dimensional, and you can concentrate on pass rush and coverage schemes. 2. The secondary has a borderline shut down corner, and a true playmaker at FS- W/ this you can basically take away an entire side of the field. You have a ton of options of what to do on the other side. W/ all the talent we have in the secondary, and the way the pass rush has been...the pass coverage is gonna get figured out. If the offense keeps putting up these point totals...look out. We could be like a recent Colts team, except w/ a much more talented and well rounded defense. Give it time.
I also think the Defense in the 3rd qtr came out in Cover 2. If you notice, we started the half with DeVito, Mosley, and Bowens on the Line. Also had Coleman, and Poteat in the nickle package. Not a lineup that instills confidence in me?? Now I'm not sure if Jenkins was hurting, or they just know to give him plenty of rest, but he was prob in 60% of the snaps. Now don't get me wrong, he is the MVP of the team so far, a true BEAST. And I think Calvin Pace is a close second...But when we wanted, and when the game was still a game, they didn't score a single point on our defense. So yeah, that 3rd Qtr got me going into a frenzy...but thankfully we put up 56 pts. I'm HOPING that our defense does not become a problem...and hopefully the 3rd qtr was just Sutton giving some guys a chance to get on the field.
We need to get Coleman the hell off the field. Almost every time we get burnt he's the closest guy to the wideout making the catch. Every team we've played has attacked him and succeeded. He just plain sucks. Hopefully with the bye week they will have inserted Poteat at the nickel.
I think this game shows a few things: 1. The Cardinals defense is awful. 2. We can beat up on awful defenses. 3. You can drop back into coverage every now and then -- but the bottom line is to get pressure on the qb. 4. When we use Leon to run -- it helps Thomas Jones. 5. The CB's are going to be really good (even if they had a tough time from time to time). 6. Kurt Warner may be one of the best QBs ever if you dont pressure him and one of the worst starters ever if you do. 7. SD is very good -- and we should not have been on the ledge after that one. I was very happy to see the Chiefs win yestersay -- I would have liked the Bengals to win also. I think winning 4 of the next 5 will be difficult (Cinci, Oakland, KC, buffalo, St Louis). I cant see us not hiccupping along the way. Oakland may actually be the best of the lot (other than Buff, of course).
Hopefully after the bye, Miller will be back. Poteat and Miller can rotate at nickel. I agree that Coleman just needs to stay off the field...
I don't think it fair to say the Card's D is awful. They were ranked pretty highly entering the game. Same for their O. The first half they were self destructing, and the Jet O took full advantage, as they should. The second half imo was a combo of Jets going prevent to open the half and the Cards' O finding their groove. They do have great receivers and Warner has a strong arm. Having said that, Coleman was awful, and I noticed Barrett (despite his pick six last week) was not getting it done, either. Some not so great tackling, and the pursuit was not always there, either. Gang tackling, baby. Get it done.
I like Jones, but this team should be in a 3 wide 1 TE set, with Leon in the backfield, most of the time.
I was glad to see Poteat back. Hell, I was thrilled when he appeared with the ball running up the sideline.
No need to eat crow. One whacky win against a team as awful as the Cardinals does not mean you were wrong about anything you said about the Jets. That can only be judged after a whole season has been played. With that said, I hope the offense keeps playing the way it did yesterday, and I hope the defense drops the moronic 8 man zone and starts using the linebackers the way they are meant to be used, RUSHING THE PASSER! When you get to the QB, Warner proved what can happen.
