I just could'nt understand what the coaching staff was doing there. Not gonna finger point at much here but that was (were) the worst call(s) by the Jets CS. I mean, first we had 4 attempts at it...could'nt make either one...Offense sucks... Then, the ball was at the 2, then at the 1, than half yard, then about half a foot away....Why PASS on all 4 attempts? And all with an empty backfield? Let alone passing here, not even a play action or something??? That was probably the worst call of this Coaching Staff's career...
That's a big part of the problem, Mangini seemed to be reading the papers this week and altering his gameplan to appease the whiners who said he had to be more aggressive. We finally got some momentum back after KC scored 17 straight points and we gave it right back.
it was painful to watch the entire game last night. It appears as though the Jets don't love football, they are just doing there jobs.
When losing one man on defense makes that much of a difference, we are in big trouble. Brett had good numbers, and the two picks weren't all his fault. Coles should have either caught or batted down the first one, and the second was a either a misread or a ball thrown away but not far enough. 71% and 3TDs is a good day for a man who was on the run, and had no run support.
The team looked bad on so many levels you have to blame some of that on coaching. The onside kick, not kicking the FG and going for 2 clearly weren't coaching decisions. Those are the kind of things a 10 year old on Madden does. As soon as we find out who the 10 year old on the Jets sideline is call security.
Whether you like the way the team is coached or not, the reality is that this game shut up all the people on this board who keep saying that Mangini has no balls. We did an onside kick, went for 2, tried some trickery with the play fakes, and passed the ball a lot. And we still lost! Why? Because the Chargers have been with the same core group of guys for a while now. When someone new comes in, he has to get with the program of the rest. Right now, the Jets are just a mish mash of veterans from the Herm era, Tanenbaum's young new players, and the big free agency pick-ups. These things take time. Hopefully not so much time that it's too late for us to make a playoff run. But, as long as we keep doing ballsy things like airing it out and going for 2, I am going to be happy whether we win or lose.
I disagree. If the coaching is ballsy and fails, you'll call it asinine. If it succeeds, you'll be thrilled. I happen to love the random onside kick in the middle of the game, regardless of whether you are winning or what the deal is. I don't care if it fails. Maybe you'll call that asinine and that's fine but I love that play.
Nope, as long as there is a plan w/ the risks I'm ok w/ it but it seemed to me like he was taking risks just to say he took risks. If it's a good situation and we fail I'm ok w/ it. After giving up 14 straight points on 2 turnovers then getting a TD back to cut it to 17-14 was not the time to try an OS kick. If successful we get the ball at our 40 or so but if we miss they get it around our 40. It didn't make sense to try it there. It was foolish on 4th and 4 inside the 10 in the 3rd qtr to go for a TD. Those are foolish risks.
They recoevered one later but after cutting the SD lead to 17-14 they tried one in the 2nd qtr and gave SD great FP and they scored a TD to make ie 24-14 and we never got that close again.
As much as it bugs me to say this, Junc is right on the money. Of course we would be thrilled if we recovered the ball but the odds say it's a 1 in 5 shot. Its a low percentage play that puts your team in the hole 80% of the time. A hail Mary pass is a great play if your guy catches it but you don't throw them when you don't need to.
Ahh yes now I remember. Thanks. By the 3rd onside kick and 3rd 2 point conv attempt I thought the broadcast may have been skipping or playing the same quarter over and over
Many good points have been made here about specific problems. Problems with poor play by individual players, with plays called, with schemes both on O and D, players looking slow, reads not made. But another aspect, one I think is related to all the others, is that the Jets did not look inspired. With exceptions here and there, they were mailing it in. I know that is easy for fans to say sitting in front of the tv, but the comparison with the Chargers was obvious, as it has been all season regarding Jet opponents. Even the fish. Yeah the players SHOULD be inspired, but they're not. You have to hang that mostly on the CS, I am afraid.
Unless it works...then it's ballsy...thats what ballsy moves are...if they don't work they're "asinine" and if they do they're ballsy.
I think what you say makes sense, but ... I don't know how you can leave the defense woes off your list.
iwill blame mangini for the first onside kick call. that game was completely in reach and this fucker pulls that. i literally sent a text to my friend as soon as it happened. "this is bullshit, mangini gets blasted for being conservative so he comes out coaching like this is NFL Blitz or some shit" kris jenkins get your cortozone shot and play, theres no defense without u
When they don't work in a game you're in the thick of in the second quarter there not ballsy or asinine, they reek of panic.
