All true, however it's also true that you draft "IMPACT" players in the top 10 of the draft or your doing it wrong. Gholston could very well develop, or he could end up another combine freak like Dwayne Robertson. The bottom line is if he was half the freakish talent he was sold as during the draft, then he should at least show up rushing off the edge. As of now, he is a total non factor and that's never a good thing for the #6 overall pick.
Nah not so true on one play he was a down lineman (hand in the dirt) & was totally driven out of the play by the Pats OLman
He was projected by many to go at #6 to the Jets well before the combine. Whether he works out for us at not, he should not ever be considered a combine freak. He's learning a new position at the NFL level - reasonable people would have some patience with him doing that.
Do you really think a pass rusher from college who doesn't have any moves yet is going to be able to beat the Pats left tackle who has seen every possible move and knows to expect the bull rush? It's going to take time for Gholston to learn to play in the system and learn moves to beat tackles. He seems to be showing more of his natural burst now then he did in the pre season and at some point he is going to be a very difficult player to keep out of the back field. Chris Long has been useless as well. The bottom line is that NFL offensive lineman who have multiple years of experience blocking pass rushers are going to dominate rookie lineman 99% of the time. Line play at that level is so much about technique and using your hands. Mario Williams got owned his rookie year and now he's one of the top ends in the league. Have just a tiny bit of patience.
He is totally lacking in instincts also so it is bad combo. Look he has certainly watched enough FB in his life to have hopefully picked up that a straight bull rush is a one way ticket to becoming a total bust
Pure non sense, what special moves do you think he's learning in the pros that they aren't teaching kids in pe-wee much less college. This is not rocket science, it's football and if a the #6 overall pick in the draft can't show anything at all in pass rush, then Jet fans are kidding themselves if they think it shouldn't be a concern.
Gholston is a major bust. He can't grasp the defensive gameplan. Just call him Ghost cause you never see him or hear his name on the PA.
Were the Texans concerned about Mario Williams when he showed nothing as a rookie? How many years did it take Mike Vrabel to become a very good pass rusher? He didn't even start in Pittsburgh.
I was going to ignore this thread and give Gholston a free pass for his lack of production . Then I read that he was the 12th man in the huddle on the drive that the Pats scored the game clinching FG. This guy really does need to get his head out of his ass. I thought Mangini and Tannenbaum were all about drafting smart players!
I saw this play from the stands. It was after a kick return and he was running back to the sideline and one of the coaches told him to get back in the huddle when he ran off the field. It was not his fault. You people just overreact to everything it's so pathetic.
Mario Williams ended his rookie season with 47 tackles 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Do you see anything close to that out of Gholston? Exactly what round was Vrabel drafted in?
There are 14 games left and he's not even an every down player at this point. I know you really want him to suck, I'd want him to suck if I were a Pats fan too. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him finish with around 5 sacks.
Patriots fans have a thing about jet fans havikng absolutely no hope. they want to convince us early that all our draft picks are busts/reaches and that all our established young players are overrated and have "peaked". It's their way of making us feel like crap and to better themselves. I guess beating us twice a year isn't enough.
First off make no mistake, I never said he sucks. What I said is you have to question just how little he's shown for the 6th pick overall. You then pointed out Mario Williams and Mike Vrabel, neither of which support your argument. In spite of what many here belive Willaims had a fine Rookie season on a pretty bad Texan team. In fact, if Gholston put up the 47 tackles and 4.5 sacks this year for the Jets, you guys would be jumping up and down calling him the next L.T. What continually amazes me is how little objectivity most Jet fans have about their own team.
And I didn't accuse you of saying that - I said you want him to suck, which must be true. I want all Pats draft picks to suck. The point of using Williams and Vrabel as a comparison is to show that neither of them produced jaw dropping numbers there first season and that it takes time for rookies to adapt to the NFL. A lot of people on here want to call Gholston a bust already which is completely absurd considering it's week 2 of his rookie season and he's learning a new position. Yes he's shown very little, I don't think that is any cause for concern week 2 into his rookie season. I really don't. If at the end of the year he still has shown very little, then I'll worry. I expect him to be making plays towards the end of the season. I do not see ANYONE here overrating him at this point. If you have seen that, please show us where.
The few times I saw him in the game he didnt get any pressure he didnt do anything... He just ran into the linemen and the linemen just stood there and laughed while pushing him past the first down marker... Fuck changing position he was a down linemen too he sucks...
And back to the Mario Williams comparison - he didn't do a lot as a down lineman his rookie season. He was an every down player. How many plays has Vernon played at DE so far? C'mon people, have ONE OUNCE of patience. Unreal.
