For two years in a row now, the Jets have struggled before the bye week. Last year they struggled the entire year, but did beat a decent Steelers team right after the bye. This year, I think you have to take into strong consideration the inexperience this unit has as a group. 1) We threw a new quarterback in the mix in the middle of TC. 2) We added 5 new parts to the defense. On both sides of the ball, our team has struggled so far I think. The D has shown flashes of what I think can be a dominant defensive unit, but they still need to gel and get a feel. The offense, also, needs time. Brett Favre knows about 2/3 of our playbook. Is it enough to run an offense effectively? Yes. But does it hinder your ability to call the play you want? Absolutely. Let's wait until after the bye week to judge this team. The playcalling has been crappy on both sides and the special teams has absolutely sucked as well. Westhoff being absent? Perhaps. I know I seem to be making a decent amount of excuses for the teams poor play. But that is because the excuses are pretty much reasonable and it is probable that they are the reason this team seems sluggish and stupid. We need to fix 1) Dumb penalties 2) Awful punting and kicking team 3) Play-calling lack of balls If we do, we are a force to be reckoned with.
They should have most of the wrinkles ironed out over the next 2-3 games tops. To a certain degree I think there is some adjustment still happening for the offense with Favre at QB. I actually liked what I saw from the defense until late in the game. They had a couple bad breaks here and there, but they did a decent job against the run until late in the game. Down the stretch the Pats just kept pounding the line and they had Jordan in the game late with fresh legs so it is going to be tough to stop a bullish back like that when you are tired and he isn't. We'll have a better feel for things in a game or two more. It should start coming together by then or we are going to have problems all season.
Bwaaaaahhhh  So true.... We do have a lot of new pieces but I think the only adjusting we need is our CS to grow a pair...
Maybe Shanahan can lend our CS one of his as they seem to be oversized after his call to go for 2 and the win yesterday.
I agree, Jet fans are going to have to adjust to the fact that their team isn't half as good as they hoped.
we'll have 1 year with Favre. Why bring him here to not succeed? We don't have time in this league for that stuff. Yesterday was a game we should have won. If we wanted to see 150 yard passing dink and dunk bullshit we could have kept Pennington.
I had a thread, "You play to............WIN THE GAME". It got merged but I mentioned Denver. > You can see it here < So fun to see a CS that believes in their teams ability.
In order to go for it like Shannahan did yesterday, your team actually has to be in a rhythm and making plays. When you spend much of the game with your offense sputtering, taking risks like that is semi-retarded. Part of making gutsy calls like that is having confidence in your unit to come up with the play, and for your unit to have the confidence to make the play. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am certain I remember a pretty big ballsy point in a game Mangini decided to go for it (couple years back) and we failed to convert on 4th down (if I remember right) and this forum wanted to crucify him for it.
I stood up for Penny and I still do. Sure there are some throws he wouldn't zing in there like Brett but it's obvious that the CS and playcalling are a primary reason for our lack of offense. Didn't our O Put up a shit load of pts. in GB a few years ago? Didn't We go downfield in Minny and Vs SD? Yet, many believed we couldn't when in fact we have and they just CHOOSE not to. Am I angry to have Favre? c'mon, Let's be realistic but all this is doing is proving what some of us have been saying all along. It wasn't all Chad's fault. BTW, Chad in Minny would have been incredible right now. They missed that one.
That was vs Indy and the reason was because there was no Logical reason to go for it there. Me , I had NO problem with it simply because I love when a team goes for the Jug. Unfortunately, our Jug has 3 X's on it and some weird juice like the cartoons.
I completely agree. If we're gonna stay in the "play not to lose mode", then signing Farve was a waste of the team's cap space and a waste of Farve's time. We could have kept Pennington and lived with the dink and dunk. At least BS1(Schotts) would be right at home..
most of us predicted a 1-3 start for the jets...they still have a weak schedule. by the bye week we'd have "adjusted" as well. so looking bright folks
absolutely. We had a chance to get favre and you just have to take it. If not for this i would have been in full support of Chad. It's tough to see him in Miami and i bet despite what he says it's tough for him too. If we're gonna bring in Favre our coaching need to change to his stengths. If we lose doing that i would be happier than wasting the signing and draft pick. Chad in Minny would have been great for him and them and i would have been able to root for the guy. The sooner these teams start giving up with this stupid Vick style QB fad and get back to real QBs this league will be btter off.
The offseason is for adjustments. If you need until the bye week every year to get things right you're definitely not doing an NFL head coaching job. You could make an argument that Favre's late arrival has bollixed up the Jet's early mo, and maybe that's right, but The West Coast Offense in Green Bay was fairly similar to the one the Jet's draw up, being different only in that Favre didn't checkdown 90% of the passes to under 10 yards. One thing to think about here is that if Mangini gets the boot in mid-season the likely interim coach is Bill Callahan and the Raiders WCO of the early 2000's was much more agressive than either the Jets or Packers. Might give Favre a mid-season breath of fresh air and make the second half more interesting.
fuck waitng for the bye week-which is a 3 pt favorite right now-i wanna see the f-ing ball go down the field.i wanna see keller going down the seam.i wanna see them try to blow a game wide open.i don't care if we lose to s.d. mon nite but if we do it like we did yesterday i'm gonna freakin flip out
Talk about minimizing the return on our investment ! Take the shackles off of Favre and let him throw it around the field. Get the TE integrated into the passing game. Let the man start to earn his (considerable) paycheck.
