You just have to get Brad Smith the ball and he can make plays. Doesn't mean he has to line up at QB or he's going to be a Pro Bowl WR, but he's fast and knows how to run with the ball. The reverse or the WR screen, however they do it, get him the ball and let him run.
Why do you think all of us Packer Fans are with the Jets right now. I am so happy to say I told you so. This guy can just play QB. I am so happy with Cotchery, Coles and I think Smith & Henry. One thing I would say about New Yorkers and this is a generalization but they really like winning, more so than the average fans. We in the midwest are a little more reserved. There will come a time when the game is hopelessly gone/lost and #4 will do whatever he has to try and save the day; passes into triple coverage, real heartstoppers, runs, blocks. When was the last time you had a QB lay out a linebacker, you got one now and much as I love the guy I cringe everytime he does that shit.
He has had a ton of drops. Maybe waiting for Chad's ball has caused him to hear footsteps. Favre will get it there quicker and more often. He has to hang on. One game proves nothing. Let's cross our fingers. Only time will tell.
No, it was an absolutely horrible mistake, but at least the penalty had nothing to do with the success of the play. Just a boneheaded error that can be corrected somewhat by good ol' lap runnin'.
And give the defense ample time to close on Cotchery. The play was successful because of the speed with which the throw reached him. If he hadn't looked off his other receiver, and then zipped it in, you can bet the safety would have been over to assist in much more of a hurry.
favre takes the qb position to a whole other level, cotch, coles, smith, jones, keller e.c.t, should all benifet from favre. if most everybody stays healthy, we can win 10, 11 games. b.t.w i just bought opening day tickets.
I've been hitting that video of Farve hooking up with Cotchery like a crack pipe. I'll never get tired of watching it.
It was thrown on a rope how many yards in the air, in order for number 10 to do that, and I love him to death, he would have had to throw the ball almost as instantly as he hiked.. Think hut hut.. Hik-throw !!
Chads problem with arm strength had nothing to do with throwing the deep ball, there was/is nothing more annoying on this site than the suggestion that it was. Chad could have made that throw with the time Favre had. The problem with Chads arm strength was the out patterns or fitting the ball in tight spots, something we won't have to worry about for at least the next two years.
Zach: Downfield? That was nothing, you'll see that and better 5-7 times a game, every game. My favorite though is when the D takes away the deep ball and #4 dings em 6-7 yards a play for 10 passes, 7 runs, 7 points and 8 minutes off the clock.
Let's not get carried away please. I actually saw the words "Favre" and "football Messiah" used in one newspaper article yesterday, and while I personally think he is still a great player, he's not personally unstoppable no matter what, he's not going to be able to do much of anything alone, on an incomplete offense, he's 1 of 11. Go back to 2006 and 2005 if you doubt that. And this idea that Favre is a possession quarterback / game manager, dinking and dunking by nature seems ... a little foreign. He can and has played that way, but I think what you're describing is more the exception than the rule. Especially if the team is behind LOL -- then he DEFINITELY does not play this way, unless his coaches force him, he is actually notorious for going for the long completion even if the defense is playing that; that is actually one of his larger flaws as quarterback, he gets impatient with taking what the D gives him way too early when his teams fall behind.
Spare me, but you never had Pennington for the past 5 years, and I strongly doubt whether you understand what DDDP offense means. In other words... 5 years of DDDP offense will do that to you as well. Anyway... I'm feeling a lot better than I initially did when the Jets brought Favre in - I had my doubt, and still do but I feel much better now.
Here's to Cotchery's breakout year! Does anyone get a sense that even despite the whole Coles/Favre awkwardness is going to carry over to the field? I don't mean they will hate each other, but I feel like Cotchery is going to take over this season and be Favre's new Greg Jennings and Coles his Donald Driver.
I would classify "Favre's Donald Driver" to be the guy who will primarily cross the middle and take the big hit without dropping the ball, and "Favre's Greg Jennings" to be the guy who will beat the coverage downfield. Is that what you mean? If it is, I would have thought it would be the other way around if anything, if there is any comparison at all between the WR pairs. I'm not sure what you mean otherwise.
The throws bought a tear to my eye. I thought I would never see something like that from a Jet Qb in my lifetime.
So you guys have been Jet fans for what? Two years? Vinny wasn't here that long ago, he could throw any pass you want.
Are we talking about the short passing attack, or constantly dumping off to your safety receiver? Because if you're saying Favre isn't about the short passing game, I strongly disagree. He achieved total mastery of the west coast short passing game, and the quick slant is without a doubt his best pass. Go back to last season, the first eight games the Packers had no running attack. The bread and butter on offense was the short passing game, with the deep ball mixed in. Not vice-versa. With Holmgren it was all about the horizontal passing game. Favre never took a single snap under shotgun during Holmgren's entire tenure. (That's not to say shotgun=deep pass, but you get the point.) So we should be excited that Brett can go deep whenever he wants with the Jets, but we should expect him to do what he's always done---pick you apart short and take a few shots long. (Maybe he will go more vertical in a new offense, that is possible.) Not so simple, but the general point is right. Favre was down by 14 in the playoffs against Seattle last year and did not start throwing long balls. In 2006 when he was playing on a Junior Varsity team, he would go deep in the 4th quarter. Did that turn out well? No. Did that team have a chance to do anything without Favre pulling something out of his ass? Almost certainly not, the roster was ruined by Sherman and injuries. Some truth here, but this point is often exaggerated. Of course you can point to games where it has happened, he has been starting for 17 years. If he had done things differently with that awful 2006 team then I don't think this point would be brought up nearly as much. Favre has had a lot of great success coming from behind, so you can't bring up the bad without asking whether it is outweighed by the good. (40-45 4th quarter comebacks, etc.) Favre's short game is not about being a game manager and winning with running, defense, and special teams. It's about reading and picking apart defenses. It's a more essential part of his game than the deep ball, even though he can fling it as far as he wants and had terrific success when he went deep last year. Regarding Favre playing out of control, I'm not completely disagreeing. If Holmgren had stayed with Favre, that would have been a damn good thing, because he could control Favre like nobody else.
