P.T. Barnum would be proud. Woody's statement of putting "the best product on the field" looks very transparent, now that the PSL issue is front and center. It isn't about football, it's about selling snake oil in the form of a pipe dream. Three years from now, Brett will be out of the league, and Woody will be drawing interest on his "investment." And we fans will be left holding the bag. Five years from now, Woody can open the books and sell the team quick to an unfortunate sucka.
It's not P.T. Barnum who would be proud, it's Sonny Werblin, who put the Jets and the AFL on the map when he signed Joe Namath.
So, you saw people sh!t on your 'football expertise' regarding the OL and Favre's quick release. So you decided to bring up more somber topics of discussion to rain on everyone's parade. Get over it man. Today is a day to rejoice. Even negative nancy's like you should go out for a stroll in park in your sunday dress. We get very few moments like this as fans, so go ahead...enjoy it. PSL's were coming regardless, with or without Brett Favre.
I think you're right, and I've probably been one of the more vocal guys against PSLs. Regardless of what the trade does to the PSLs, as a Jets fan, I'm a happy camper this morning. I probably would have had to give up my seats anyway, Favre or no Favre.
After investing millions on a new stadium and training facility, I doubt very much Woody is looking to sell the team in 5 years. Even with PSLs 5 years wouldn't give him much of a return on his investment after shelling out all that money. Unless an investor comes and makes it rain. But I doubt it. More likely if he is going to sell, it would be more in the 10 year range.
I hope you're all this excited when you get your PSL letter Woody is playing everybody by bringing in an old man to play QB in the same weeks he's going to soak you for thousands of dollars. Woody knows what he's doing.
If Woody thinks bringing in Favre will help sell high PSLs to current ticketholders, what's gotten lost in all this is that most ticketholders simply can't afford the PSLs, period. I don't care if you clone Joe Namath and bring him in here. Even John Mara, with all his arrogance and sitting on a SB-winning team, even he has misjudged the obvious... the PSLs are just unaffordably high for most ticketholders. My seats will become a $7500 PSL per seat and the ticket price will be $400 per ticket. To me, that's tying up $30,000 and spending $1600 every Sunday. There's just no way in hell, I don't care if you put a Madden fantasy team on the field. Now, if their reasoning is that bringing in Brett Freakin' Favre will help sell my seats to some Manhatten corporation, well then, maybe they'll be able to. But either way, I'm out. I can't afford those prices if you told me Jesus Christ himself would be under center.
No matter what the Jets have done yesterday, or this offseason, they still can't justify having the PSL's more than the Giants. I'll take my seats for $1,000.
I really don't think Woody can have PSL's in mind by signing Favre?? The stadium won't be done until 2010...Favre will be 41 years old. You really think you'll see #4 take the field in the new stadium? I think we have him for 1 year, MAX. We will still be in the Meadowlands next year, with Ainge or Clemens behind center. Talk about a let down...ugh.
Nice post, WB, although of course it would be more appropriate if Favre was about 15 years younger. Anyway, as Champ also said, there is no doubt that this is just the kind of thing Sonny would have loved. Anyone who is stupid enough to now pay for a PSL when they wouldn't have before because Favre is here for a year or two (and likely won't even play in the new stadium), deserves what they get. There are a lot of idiots in the world, but I doubt there are that many who are THAT stupid.
Hey, I said this in another thread. So this guy's stealing my material! Thing is, the stuff about this being "snake oil" is garbage. Favre is a better QB than who the Jets had. From Day One after last season, WJ has been putting a lot of pressure on his two boy geniuses to improve the team. Hopefully, these moves will upgrade the team, and won't backfire (the way free agent signings sometimes do). Another point: WJ tried to build a Jets Stadium in Manhattan, which would have been very cool, IMHO. And PSLs are what they (NFL owners) have to do to build these super-stadiums. How else you gonna pay off The Sopranos to build the new stadium, and remove all the refuse after the games? Bada Bing!!!!
Woody would be able to sell PSL with Brett Favre or without. It doesn't really matter. There are plenty of people willing to shell out their money for PSL. I finally got on the waiting list recently, once I found out about PSL and it became apparent that many people would not renew their season tickets.
