to be presented only to lifetime achievers of the kind that Pennington was. To be apprised of these categories: Long-term: Total Commitment to the Organization The Overcoming of Immense Hardship Individual On-Field Accomplishment Great And Inspiring Leadership Various Unnamed Intangibles How did Chad measure up to these> - Never wavered from the Party Line; was a good soldier. - Two Shoulder Surgeries; Playoff win with torn rotator; Come-Back Player of the Year Winner. - Chad had some great years; his record versus the Fins is impeccable; playoffs often; holds record for #1 Passer Completion % in NFL History. - Pennington was the de facto stamp on the team's identity. In the history books, it will be the Chad Pennington Era of Jets Football.
I thought Penny's career was over for sure when his dick snapped off, but give the guy credit, he's a fighter.
Injuries killed his career. I remember how exciting it was when it seemed like we finally had a franchise QB. The man has done nothing but played his heart out for us, and I have nothing but respect for him. Good luck Chad.
you don't give out an award named after a guy who's still an active player in the league - and may very well be playing against you at some point. if we're talking about qb's to honor, vinny testaverde probably is the guy from this era who forged more of a connection with the team and community. and he fits those categories just as well, if not better.
Wow people act like Pennington gave his left nut for the Jets, when in reality he was over compensated. Sure he was a good guy and a good team guy but feel sorry for a mediocre QB that made a zillion dollars?...............lmao yeah right ok.
comon Stan, lighten up. He put his injured ass on the line every year. He watched his career painfully slip away with every crack of a bone and tear of a rotator cuff. His band-aids needed band-aids which undoubtedly was painful for him. Sadly enough, you need an arm to throw a ball, and people should be sympathetic that he didnt have one..... shrugs
That describes Joe Namath, Curtis Martin and Joe Klecko and some others, I suppose. Aside from the on-field accomplishment all that also describes Dale Dawkins. Dawkins and Pennington were the greatest sideline towel wavers in team history, no doubt.
This is not a "I hate Chad" thing. I do not hate him actually. That being said......... I kill my body playing a sport and get paid squat, I do it because I love it. I have zero sympathy for anyone playing a sport and gets paid out the ass to do it. He got hurt playing a sport........he is not a soldier, policeman or fireman hurt in the line of duty. It is a freaking sport man. Like I said he was nothing more than mediocre, he got paid extremely well. For the money he made he should be classy and should be a stand up guy. I am not bitter and do not hate him just the way I feel.
I feel for him and it's not about the injuries per se. He could have sat on his money like so many other people after he got hurt but he kept coming back again and again. He's a competitor for sure, but it was also partly because he just flat out gave a crap about the Jets and the fans (and those fans repaid him with classless cheering last year when he got hurt but that's beside the point). Not like Mr. Superstar who didn't deign to talk to us till after every other option got shut in his face, we were like Favre's fourth choice. I'd be foolish to say that the Jets aren't a better team now than they were a few hours ago or that I don't want Favre (even though his antics really turned me off to him and ironically I was a huge Favre guy before this offseason). But some of the fun is taken out of it now that Chad won't be a part of it.
He did'nt exactly give his left nut to the team. Nor the right one for that matter. What he did was, he put his ENTIRE career on line for the us. Playing with a rotator cuff injury ONLY to try to win the playoff game and to keep things alive. He would have taken us to the AFC Champ game with his injured shoulder if it had'nt been for the bumhead kicker (thank God I forgot his name.) The organization never overpaid him anything. Infact, he was the one who took a reduction of salary TWICE. Once to bring back Coles and once when doubts were casted over his career (came back strong as the comeback player of year) The guy played his heart out for the organization (Remember John Abraham?). Risk is always rewarded if you beat the odds. What do you call it when you have already been rewarded but are still taking the risk? Commitment!
BTW, soldiers, policemen, firmen, all those people get paid much more than those that just graduate with Bachelors degree. They get so many benefits, I just dont see them being the heroes (especially the cops...bloody tickets man ). They are compensated for their risks. Same is for any athletes. Football players risk their lives too and alot of them die relatively early.
