yeah...this seems a tad too coincidental. I think the fact that the CS cancelled BOTH practices is the tell-tale sign that something is afoot.
The most significant strength and conditioning gains are realized during the offseason provided the players themselves put in the work as in the example set forth by Leon. Anyone who has done rigorous strength training and aerobic conditioning knows that the gains made over the course of a month are not nearly as significant as those made over the long haul. Of greater importance and emphasis in TC are the drills and exercises focused toward enhancing position skills, cohesive teamwork and error-free execution of the playbook and individual assignments on both sides of the ball, and adjusting to contact and real time game speed. While strength and conditioning certainly represent a significant portion of the TC experience there are also many other components that are not a major part of the off season program which compels players to arrive at camp already in good shape. Allowing a day off from time to time for recovery represents is a sound practice for the prevention of injuries and improved athletic performance.
Does anyone know if it is the norm to cancel a full day of practices this early in camp? Do other teams do it? If so, how often? I need answers dammit, ANSWERS!!
maybe mangini is overly impressed at how fit the whole team is coming into camp & feels it best to give their bodies a break & classroom work is more important. I just can't get my head around farve in camp. it makes no sense to me
Posted by ESPN.com's Tim Graham: New York Jets coach Eric Mangini has cancelled Monday's practices. They originally had been scheduled for 8:45 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. Mangini scrubbed the schedule to give his players a recovery day. Mangini, always exploring ways to maximize each moment, decided before camp that he would give his players an occasional day off to recoup physically and mentally. One more Brett Favre question and the Jets might have needed to load a charter bus for the Bellevue psychiatric ward. "My goal is to get them as prepared as possible in the best possible shape that they can be in but not fatigued, and finding that balance," Mangini recently told reporters. "I was talking to a friend of mine who still played, and he makes the point about training camp that coaches want to kill you. His whole point was that it does at some point become counter-productive." Mangini is trying to keep all sessions under two hours. He went with the 5:45 p.m. practice time to get out of the heat, and when players walk off the field from those they're done for the day. All meetings are now completed before late workouts. "What I've tried to do is look at the different things that I thought have been very successful," Mangini said. "It's been an evolution, going through and talking to people and trying to figure out what other stuff like that you can have." Edit: Sorry for the double post. Didn't see this on Page 2.
you want the truth???????? you can't handle the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can tell you this is not normal. especially with a young coach with a lot of new starters on the squad. I am baffled
Just like the old Herm TC practices! Maybe they can get in a good pickup basketball game and fire up the barbeque after.
If they canceled training camp just to schmoooze a potential player out of retirement, they're freakin idiots, and if Favre needs that much coddling he can stay on the farm! :shit:
New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum was a guest on New York Sports talk radio station WFAN this morning with Boomer (Esiason) and Carton (jerk Craig "Pompous Carton"). The hosts grilled Tannenbaum on many topics and here is an excerpt from the interview: Carton: Mike, thanks for joining us this morning. Let's get right to it. Brett Favre is being actively shopped around by the Packers and reports have the Jets and Bucs as the most likely destinations. Can you please tell us where the Jets are at in negotiations? Tannenbaum: Craig, I can honestly tell you that we love the competition we have at the quarterback position this year. Chad looks great so far, Kellen looks just as good, and Eric is extremely excited about the competition. Carton: Mike, don't be a jerk. Boomer: Mike, I know you committed in the offseason to have these two guys battle it out, but what about Favre? Will we see him in a Jets uniform before the start of the season? And you can piss Craig off all you want, but you better be straight with me. Tannenbaum: Boomer, as you know, I have utmost respect for quarterbacks and I look forward to seeing our guys battle it out this year. Carton: Okay, Mike, I can see you're holding your cards pretty tight to the vest so I'm just going to put this out there. I'm a die-hard Jets fan and I want Favre. The fan base wants Favre. Mangini would kill to have Favre instead of the dogs he's got to work with. So, I beg you, give me something. Is Brett Favre going to be a Jet? Boomer: And Mike, before you respond, let me just say that Craig is literally crying, so please be straight with the poor bastard. Tannenbaum: Guys, I can offer you this. Favre would be willing to come here, but the conditions he has laid out are pretty intense at the moment. Carton: Mike, that's enough. If you don't bring this guy in here, you will be vilified for the rest of your life. You will be hunted down wherever you go and will be tortured and beaten by Jets fans all over the country. So with that said, tell me what condition has Favre given that could possibly make you hesitate given the alternatives that we have at QB right now? Tell me! Tannenbaum: Craig, Brett's only condition is that we would have to fire Mangini and bring back Rich Kotite as head coach. So you tell me, how do you feel about it? [dial tone] Carton: Okay, Tony from Manhattan is on the FAN, what's up Anthony...?
Some injuries are going to occur regardless of the conditioning program. It didn't seem like we had a wide rash amount of them - like the last year Herm was here and nearly the entire 1st string offense was out in addition to a few others. Now I think some of that was probably conditioning.
I agree, Jet Fighter. Can one of your Hofstra-ites spin by the Weeb to see if Mangini's car is missing? Theoretically, he could have driven to the facility before flying out, but maybe not.
