Favre NOT reporting according to Peter King

SUMRALL, Miss. -- Three new storylines emerged in the Brett Favre Saga Saturday night, as the 38-year-old temporarily unemployed quarterback decided to smoke the peace pipe with Packers general manager Ted Thompson -- for now -- and shelve plans to show up at the opening of Green Bay's training camp Sunday.

Favre may be playing this high-stakes game with the Packers, with a new referee: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who told Favre late Saturday afternoon in a telephone conversation he would do what he could to try to help Favre and the team come to a decision both sides could live with. But as Saturday night turned into Sunday, it was virtually impossible to see what that solution might be.

Favre told SI.com here at his home west of Hattiesburg, Miss., Saturday night: "I had planned on reporting for the start of Packers training camp Sunday, but Ted Thompson asked if I would give him a couple of days to try to get the situation resolved. I agreed to do that. I don't want to be a distraction to the Packers, and I hope in the next few days we can come to an agreement that would allow me to continue playing football.''

Favre also said: "I've also spoken with Commissioner Goodell a couple of times this week, in hopes that he could be some sort of arbitrator in this. I hope he can be.''

The Green Bay quarterback also flatly denied the Minnesota Vikings had tampered with him as he considered whether to return to play earlier this month. He said he talked to Vikings coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, but he said he talks to both men and text-messages them often, as well as to other NFL coaches in and out of season.

Bevell coached the Green Bay quarterbacks from 2003-05, while Childress spent a lot of time in Green Bay studying the Packers offense as a University of Wisconsin assistant in the mid-1990s.

But that may not be enough to prevent the league from finding the Vikings guilty of tampering. Favre was interviewed this week by the league's vice president of security, Milt Ahlerich, about the Packers' belief that the Vikings tampered.

"I have no qualms about admitting I talked to them,'' Favre said. "Talking with Milt, he said, 'Brett, did they entice you?' I said no, 'I don't need to be enticed anywhere.' They absolutely did not entice me to come to Minnesota.''

In an earlier conversation with Thompson on Saturday, Favre said he was led to believe he would not be allowed to compete for the starting quarterback job with Aaron Rodgers. Coach Mike McCarthy said strongly that Rodgers would be his starting quarterback this year. Favre said he would consider a trade to any team, but he was noncommittal about going to either the Jets or Bucs -- the two suitors most often mentioned for Favre.

What has become obvious in the Favre affair is the Packers don't want him returning to the team in any active role. That's one of the reasons why a solution to this seemsso far off, even if Favre puts pressure on the team by reporting by, say, Wednesday.

It could be that the Packers will force Favre to stay away from the team to avoid the kind of distractions defending division champs don't need, even if they have to pay him his 2008 salary of $12.7 million.

"I told Roger, 'We're at an impasse. I would like a total release,' '' Favre said.

The Packers won't grant his wish, fearful that he'll sign with either the Vikings or Bears. They're probably right. And so the standoff goes on. The first couple of Packer practices will go on without the sideshow of Favre, but it's a temporary reprieve from all-Favre, all-the-time coverage cycling back in midweek.

sounds like brett wants a 'total' release to sign with the viks, with a 'conditional' release to the bucs or jets as his fall back.

Some guy named Jeremy Green is saying the asking price is only a 3rd rounder at best.

They want him out of the NFC, Green Bay DESPERATELY want him to the Jets.

    Balls in our court.

also, Favre has signed his reinstatement letter but will wait until tomorrow or Tues to send it in

This part of the article leads me to believe he wants nothing to do with either the Jets or the Bucs.

Not to jinx it, but this scenario is possible too:
Packers agree to trade him to Jets but, he won't come.

If that happens, I hope the Dolphins end up landing him in a backdoor deal.
I'd hate his guts and want to see him bleed turquoise and pink.
He COULD go from dream to public enemy #1.
No one disrespects us like that, except Bellichick, Manning (stayed in school when we held #1 pick), John Lynch, etc.

If favre is smart he picks the Jets. not because we here all love the jets but because its the only franchise that he can go to that will truly further his legacy. a successful season with the jets will make him a NYC god. with his career numbers and the biggest city in the world along with him, favre reaches a level that no nfl player has ever seen and no player will see for quite some time.and if what is being reported is true and the asking price is a 3rd rounder, then you have to be insane not to do this. please god, if you feel for the suffering of our franchise, grant us the man who can lead us to glory. grant us BRETT FAVRE

if that's true then he wouldn't have signed his letter of reinstatement. He's not playing for the Packers this year, and the Jets and Bucs are the only suitors.

According to the Tampa Tribune, "it is believed" that the Packers and Bucs were close to agreeing on compensation in a trade that would've sent Brett Favre to Tampa Bay on Saturday.

The Tribune suggests that renewed talks Sunday may have been why Favre and Green Bay are at a standstill. In addition, beat reporter Roy Cummings says "it is believed" that the Jets are not bidding for Favre's services. The Packers are thought to be holding out for conditional draft pick that could escalate to a first-rounder if Favre plays a certain amount of games. Jul. 27 - 2:24 pm et

he would never go to the Dolphins. They're like 3 years away from even contending.

I hope you're right. Signing the letter and not sending it in doesn't mean shit to me though.

    Favre for a 3rd or 4th...

from Green Eggs and Ham over at JI...

    ESPN Radio: Pack wants to trade Favre to Jets {3rd or 4th RD Pick}

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm Just repeating what this dude {Jeremy Green?} said on ESPN Radio, so don't shoot the messenger

He said the Packers want to trade Favre to the Jets, that is their ideal scenario because they absolutely want him out of the NFC, he said the Packers would probably get no more than a 3rd or 4th RD Pick, maybe a 3rd, because Favre is only playing one or two more years, but GB would take it {3rd or 4th} to trade Favre to the Jets and out of the NFC

But he emphasized over and over again that the Packers absolutely view the Jets as the ideal destination

    I'd take him for a 3rd...

I'm not sure what Farve expects, however. Let's be honest, many of the established "elite" teams in the NFL are so because of stability in the QB department... It's either us or tampa bay...

We could always be making a trade with thoughts of trading him to Minnesota.

I'm sure that Green Bay would insert a clause into the trade contract that would prohibit the Jets from trading him to a NFC North team. Can they do that? if they can they will.
