Ding ding ding! We have a winner. This post says it all. If Favre is a team's ticket to the SB (and he has not been there since 1997, by the way), then why aren't the Packers jumping with joy that he wants to come back? The Packers current QB situation is no better than the Jets, but they hesitate. And those who think the Jets willl be Super Bowl contenders, please remember that the Pats, barring some catastrophic event, are likely to win at least 12 games if not more. Are the Jets really going to go from a 4 win to a 13-14 win with Favre???? Ummmm, I don't think so. So the Jets will have to get to the Super Bowl the way the Giants did - as a wild card on the road. Lightning doesn't strike two years in a row. The bottom line is that teams need to have a plan. The Jets are building a team that they hope will compete for a long time. They won't be there for another year or two and by then, the Pats will be in decline.

This is still a rebuilding year. Part of that rebuilding process means finding a long term answer at QB, whether it is Clemens, Ainge, or some (young) player to be drafted or acquired next offseason. If the Jets get Favre, maybe they win 10 games, make the playoffs and lose. Then we are in the same pickle as the Pack. Favre won't decide if he will play next year or not and the Jets won't know whether to invest in the QB position with a high draft pick or trade because of diva-Favre's annual selfish antics. How does this help the Jets????? Sometimes you need to look past the next five minutes when you make a decision.

No thanks. I'll pass and let the Packers deal with this headache.

actually, i think Green Bays handeling of this situation is that they are standing on the principal that Brett Farve will not hold them hostage every season with "should i " or "should'nt i" .
i don't believe they don't want him back because they don't believe he's got anything left.

Well, they'd be the first NFL team in history to give up on a winning veteran QB for that reason if that were the case.

Favre is 96 years old and hasn't won a big game in a looooong time. That's why the Pack are moving on. They'd have offered him some nice inducements to come back otherwise. Instead they have basically slammed the door in his face.

No...Penny's cap # is around 9, I believe...GB would have to get him to restructure to a 9 mil number, if he really wants to play.

Of course we could then turn around and BURN GB by trading him to Minnesota.

It appears that Mangini thinks otherwise or we wouldn't be having a QB comp between a burnt toast vet with no arm and Clemens. Clemens would be getting the reps and being prepared to be the best he can on day 1.

Since Mangini isn't playing this like a rebuilding year why wouldn't you want to upgrade one of the competitors for the position?

I'm assuming when Pennington is named the starter you like me and others or going to be very dissapointed with Mangini.

Penny & 6th? (I am a Penny fan, but quickly would become a Farve fan)

An industry insider said yesterday that the New York Jets may be talking with the Green Bay Packers about acquiring disgruntled QB Brett Favre.

Favre said yesterday in an exclusive interview with Greta Van Susteren on Fox News that he was "guilty of retiring early." He added that he wanted to play again, but didn't feel welcomed in Green Bay.

The Jets may be thinking that Favre, along with their free agent signings this past off-season, may be enough to get the franchise to its first Superbowl since January 12, 1969.

The insider added that a possible swap might include Jets' QB Chad Pennington and a sixth round draft choice.

The Bleacher Report could not reach either Green Bay or New York for comment.

Trenton Times columnist Mark Eckel speculated today that the Packers could possibly trade Favre to the Ravens, the Dolphins, the Raiders, or the Jets—though the latter were saying that they were not interested.

However, Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Ravens are unlikely to show interest in acquiring retired Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. This leaves the door wide open for a Jets' end run.

[I tried to post link, but the site requires that I have 50 posts before I can post link, and I don't post often].

As much as I like what kind of discussion that this subject adds to an otherwise dead period of football, and as much as I would like to see Brett Favre in a Jets uniform, this is probably an elementary subject of discussion. Seeing the tampering charges against the Vikings makes me think that Favre changed his mind to go to Minny. He wants to play on an offense with a superstr to make him look great again. That's why he wanted Moss and that's why he wants to play with Adrian Peterson. We have neither.

BTW, I texted someone last week that I thought we should trade Penny and a 6th for Favre.

Just to be clear, the B. Smith comment is sarcasm. I do think Favre to Coles has a nice ring that even Favre might consider.

Penny might, I repeat MIGHT be our starter in game one, but Clemens will be our starter by the end of the Pats game. Penny just does not have the body to withstand an NFL pounding. Does "He's like an egg back there!" ring any bells?

How is it that Favre can play 17 seasons without missing a game due to injuries, but "the egg" can only complete one in eight seasons? Penny will be the starter until his fragile shell cracks.... again.

Not to mention the fact that the Jets are off a 4-12 season. This is an ego thing, he will only play for a team that He believes is poised to win a Super Bowl, but only if they are blessed with Bret Farve.

The Jets do not fit the bill. There is no way Farve is coming to the Jets.

As much as some people want it. It makes no sense

This is not a Pennington issue and I don't know why you and others turn every debate into one. If Pennington is named the starter that means that Clemens is not the answer and the Jets need to find a QB for the future, whether it is Ainge or someone else. If Favre is here, there is no competition and the Jets go another year without settling the QB situation. The Jets need to know by the end of 09 whether they need to get a QB or whether the QB is on the roster. That is my point. It will be a wasted year with Favre because we won't know if Clemens can play. He won't get the chance. We all know that Pennington is not the long term answer at QB, but he may be a hold the fort guy for a year if Clemens shows he can't play. Favre does nothing but set the Jets back a year or two.
