I don't expect either guy to put up huge numbers or anything...but our backup DL...Brown, Pouha, Moseley, and Devito all have the potential to play well...all but Brown played well in limited action last year too.
definitely stuckey on the offensive side definitely miller on the defensive side although in order for stuckey to have a breakout year clemens will also probably have to end up having a breakout year.. and ill take that all day long!!! i am not sold on keller, and i just dont have a warm and fuzzy feeling about the guy. i would also like to see abram elam have a breakout year but i think the more likely situation is miller on the defensive side. how about mangini having a breakout year, that would be nice too
Yup. Though defense could be Pace, Jenkins or Miller...But Washington is already a star in the making. Look for stuckey to be big
I agree with Flyboy. My surprise "breakout player" is Clemens. BEHIND OUR PRESENT O-LINE: Finally, with some protection, I'm looking for him to settle down and have a lot more confidence. I'm predicting our running game gets going and helps him immensely, as he'll now have the room he needs to start picking his passing shots at DEFs. PHYSICAL PREPAREDNESS: I read about his work ethic last year and I'll bet he's been working like hell as he knows this might be his position to lose. The locals in his home town used to know when football season was approaching by driving past his farm. There, in a cloud of dust, would be Kellen, wearing a horse harness and dragging a huge tractor tire around the farmyard to build up his legs. MENTAL PREPAREDNESS: He's had another offseason to study up and this time it's more meaningful, because he actually played in regular season games and can relate the book to the field, so to speak. He's also had (and will have) plenty of time to work with the coaches. I predict he'll be ready for the next level. I also think Mangini wants this too, as it's finally time for this franchise to turn the page and move on from the Pennington dink-and-dunk era. To this end he will get plenty of reps. TIMING AND PRACTICE: He had excellent chemistry with Chansi Stuckey in TC last year and I'll be looking for that to resume. I predict he'll be getting a lot more reps with the 1st team, moreso than Chad will be getting. This will enable him to also get in a groove with Cotchery and Coles, as well as establish a feel for new guys like Keller. Leon Washington's ability as a dump off will enhance his level of play also. My call is that he beats Chad in Camp, gets the starting position, and then surprises the hell out of the critics and announcers. I can hear it now... "WOW... did you see that pass from Clemens? Is this the same bumbling kid we saw last year? He's really pouring it on behind this new O-line of his! Would you believe it?"
Kellen Clemens. If Mangini's still young enough to breakout with zits under stress, surely this QB, if he lands the starting job, will be a pepperoni pizza by October.
Ever since I saw Leon Washington take the field I knew this kid was something special. Now with what we all beleive will be a good to better then good offensive line this year lets hope Thomas and Leon get lots of open holes they never had last year. Let hope our QB has more then 2 seconds to make a play or run for his life.
He'll either show us what he's made of or disappear into the Black Hole Of QBs Who Never Made It. This kid took some helacious shots last year and then got back up and stood in the pocket until the last second again. I think it was Winston Biggs who also pointed out in another thread somewhere that even though all this was going on (the pocket collapsing), he did have a good look to his deliveries... a throw that deceives DEFs with it's quickness despite the unusually late release. The KC game was exceptionally f@cking brutal. The fans were against him now even... chanting "C-H-A-D... CHAD, CHAD, CHAD" and laughing... and you could pick it up sitting there, so I'm sure he heard it quite well. And it was a Christmas holiday week game and there were a lot of drunks and he still took it like a man. He knew he was stinking up the field but he also knew he had to hang in there. Like Parcells once said, "Don't show me what that QB can do when he's in his back yard... hell, anybody looks good then... show me what that SOB can do when he's behind by 3 touchdowns and getting beat up all day. Then he'll show us what he's made of."
Well he proved to me last year that he is tough and can take what the NFL will dish out to all new QB's and to the QB's that have no line to protect them. I have to say I fell more comfortable this year with our line and I think this kid should get another shot to see what he can do with ( time, protection, little experience ) under his belt. What do you think.?
I'm certain Mangini wants to get this kid under center on Day One. Now, there's always going to be this "this position is open" and "competition will determine who gets the job" bullshit, but I'd bet a month's wages that Mangini would like to see Clemens emerge and TAKE the job. The problem still for him is showing he can run the team smoothly. We already know he has an arm... a better arm than Chad's. He has to do as well or better than Chad does at running the team. Clock management, working the clock, assembling the hurry-up, doing all the things it takes given the down and the look of the Defense. At that, Chad is an expert. He's smart, knows his plays and has a lot of touch. But Clemens showed leadership right from the first day at TC. I was there and watched him. And there were guys in the bleachers that day who were saying, "Who TF is that under center? Is that that kid Clemens? He looks like a pro..." so much so that they thought it was Jay Fiedler. He ran the team pretty smoothly... took command and let it rip. So yeah... this kid has had a lot on his plate since he's arrived. The coaches are going to look for how this kid RUNS the team... I think that's where the emphasis will be... and they'll be there for him to help teach him that stuff, because once he masters that, his arm and guts will take him places with this team that he's (and we've) only dreamed of.
Leon Washington will rush for close to 1000 yards, and have about 10 TD's. I'll take my green shades off when the sun goes down.
Offense: Dustin Keller...........will have a big year, mismatches will be created by motion and exploiting Keller against linebackers. Jet Fans will regret booing this selection last April. As far as Rd 1 picks, Keller will have a better year than Gholston. Defense: Justin Miller............Will earn the other CB position and play very well. (David Harris will be the Team's MVP, and can't consider him a "Breakout player" from his outstanding play last season.) Jehuu Caulcrick will make the final 53 with great special team play and outstanding role player.
I liked Abram Elam from what I saw other than when he knocked Darrelle Revis off the ball in the Bills game.
