Cleveland has been quite an enigmatic franchise since 2005. In '05 they made a great run, and fell just short to the White Sox, and left everyone thinking "hey, this team is one to watch in '06". In '06 they were awful, although they were also one of the unluckiest teams in MLB history with a pythag 11 games better than their actual record, and last year they were one way away from advancing to (and probably winning) the world series. Now they are awful again. Fuck the heck is going on!
bad trade for the Brewers. they just aren't the type of franchise that can rent players; their success is dependent upon grooming young players that they can keep around for 5 years or so.
I highly doubt they would do that trade without making it a point to get Sabathia signed long-term no matter what the circumstances. They are at $80,000,000 on the payroll. They have $11 million coming off with Sheets this year, Gagne has $10 million coming off, $5 million in Cameron, Kendall at $4.25 million, Capuano at $3.75 million as well as Mota, Counsell, Torres. They'll have plenty of firepower to give him the big deal that he's going to get.
Nope they are likely not going to be able to, they are taking a bit of a gamble, and if they lose him and since they would likely lose Sheets as well they would be getting 5 picks in the top 35 to replenish their farm system.
I'm not doubting that they'll have the money to get him, but they're going to have to lock him up before FA. You can bet that Steinbrenner's going to completely break the bank for him, likely throwing him a record deal, as he's throwing a fit over Hughes and Kennedy not making him forget Santana (not that Santana's been lights out thus far for us or would change their current position by much).
Santana definitely would not have made a big enough impact to have justified the trade this year. This is a great move for Milwaukee, and I'm actually happy they did it. It prevents the Rays from getting him, thereby getting an experienced frontliner for the stretch-run/playoffs. Expect that the Yankees will do everything in their power to sign him, and you can fully expect the Brewers to have no chance to prevent him from free agency unless they win the whole thing this year. Sabathia is going to be a very rich man come the winter, and moving into the NL is only going to skyrocket an already high pricetag. That doesn't mean the Yankees will get him, but you can bet all your vCash that he'll hit free agency and test the market. I won't lie, as a Yankee fan, I want to sign him in the offseason. We'd go into next year with a front 5 of: Sabathia, Wang, Chamberlain, Pettitte (he'll be back), then one of Mussina (if he returns), Hughes, or Kennedy. Can't really complain about that.
That'd be great. Then you would have the two biggest chokers in the playoffs in both your lineup and your rotation.

To paraphrase something 10P10 said not too long ago: Sabathia has been called overrated so often he's become underrated.
they have a topn of good prospects, they only traded 1 top prospect, they had 9 other guys make the AA all-star team, and gamel and la porta block each other since they are LF or 1B and the team has braun and Fielder. It's a nice trade since their pitching is thin but they have the best hitting farm system in baseball.
