you make some good points, Kurt. I don't mind Brad Smith...but i've seen him drop so many passes, i guess that makes him expendable in my eyes. Granted, he's learning a new position...so maybe we should cut him some slack....the upcoming season should be a good litmus test to see if should be a perennial "special teamer" or the 4th WR.
Because he absolutely sucks. He is not good on gadget plays, people just say he is. All I watch is them flop. Seeing him behind center in NE just makes me sick. Maybe I should blame Schotty (which I do also), but Smith is horrible. Big let down.
FUnny..b/c I saw him make quite a few plays for us in his first 2 years...he is VERY good after the catch..the very THREAT of him at gadget plays, and his spcial teams ability..IMO make him an asset. NOt a # 3 or better WR asset...but certainly a great situational guy.
I don't know, it is like he got old or something. (Gadget play wise). Other teams figured him out. It is possible it could be turned around, I mean he was horrible, but the team was 4-12. He might not be the most expendable, but if he is going to perform in 08 like he did in 07, I would not miss him at all.
Let's keep in mind that the guy was a 4th round gamble draft pick 2 years ago. I mean he was making the switch from being a spread option QB..to playing WR, running gadget plays and also doing special teams. Many option QB's come into the NFL underthe same circumstances and after their first TC we never hear from them again. Smith in his first 2 years has a handful of big plays offensively, has solidified himself as a great special teamer...and regardless of objective execution has given opposing DC's something additional to worry about. He still has a ton of time to develop...and to me...he has completely gone beyond alot of expectations. If he turns out to be nothing more than a #4 option YAC threat, and a good special teamer...I'll be thrilled.
I see what you are saying and I agree with that. I was just responding to the question with a player of some significance. The real answer is 5 no names who won't make it past training camp.
I know you are trying to make a point, but this is pretty ridiculous. None of the top 3 QBs should be on an expendable list. Who is going to play QB? You?
Bullshit. I cant remember anything of the top of my head where brad smith caught the ball in a game and did anything other then get tackled right after... Maybe he has the potential to be DEADLY after the catch but he has not shown me anything... Dont even get me started on these gadget plays that never ever work... ever I do agree on one thing we can do alot alot worse. You say he has a handful of big plays, that means 5 or less in 2 years.. Refresh my memory, I need one...
Most Expendable: 1) Any of the three tight ends. It's pretty self explanatory. Baker, Keller, and Franks are all good players. We don't need three at a position that's not even on the field every play. 2) Jesse Chatman. We have the every down back in TJ, the change of pace in leon, and the power, goalline back in Musa. What's Chatman? 3) Bryan Thomas. Yes, it will be nice to have a rotation at OLB, but we now have three of our most highly paid players at OLB between Gholston, Pace, and Thomas. Plus, we already have good depth in Bowens. 4) Chad Pennington/Kellen Clemmens. I'm a big believer in chemistry between a QB and their WRs. I'm not really sure who the better of the two is, but i'm pretty sure both of them would be better if the other one wasnt taking half their reps. 5) Erik Coleman. He's now a backup to a guy who was the Cowboy's trash. Least expendable: 1) D'brick. No depth to replace him. Hardest position in the league to find outside of QB. 2) Revis. Shutdown corners are hard to come by, and he has that potential. Lets hope so at least so we can shift our safety help to our number 2 CB. 3) Jenkins. Hopefully, the whole defense will run behind him as the anchor. He should be able to eat up 2 blockers. 4) Leon Washington. On a team lacking playmakers, he is certainly one of two. 5) Kerry Rhodes. See comment on Leon Washington.
Yea seriously. I mean...DeVito didn't look that bad and DL depth is important...but guys like Pennington, Baker, Thomas, Moore, and Miller are really are 5 most expendable players? Are we that good?
According to people like you it really doesn't matter if you have enough talent around any of the above. Didn't Chad Pennington win a SB with the 2000 Cleveland Browns? The likelyhood is none of our QB's will make a hill of beans worth of difference so it really doesn't matter which one we start might as well dump based on cost.
I recall him having a VERY good game against Miami at the end of the year and he def. made some other plays. What's funny to me is 1 year ago everyone thought Brad Smith was our future # 1 WR. He made alot of plays as a rookie and everyone was on the bandwagon. Then year 2 rolls around...and everyone forgets the guy was a converted QB...he struggles at different points in the season and suddenly he sucks and needs to be replaced ASAP. How short-sighted are some of you?? Did you really think even after his great rookie year that a converted QB wasnt gonna have some struggles? I REALLY don't get this. All I see is people failing to comprehend player development and not seeing the big picture. Especially after him having a very good rookie year.
Most expendable - Chad Pennington. This guy should not even be on the roster. Also expendable - Barrett, Bender, Poteat, B Smith Least Expendable - Mangold, Rhodes, Revis, Harris, Faneca
Most Expendable; Chris Baker -- we have Keller & Franks Brad Smith -- just another mediocre WR and we have a couple of those already Eric Smith -- the experiment on this guy is very close to being Anthony Schlegel over David Barrett -- Justin Miller, Drew Coleman, Dwight Lowery + the fact that Barrett has a big paycheck Bryan Thomas -- we have Pace + Gholston, and I am even at the point where I believe David Bowens is better Least Expendable; D'Brick Ferguson -- no backup. Period. Kris Jenkins -- if he went down, it would be the sequel to the JETS dismal running defense of last year. Nick Mangold --- no backup. David Harris -- if he went down w/an injury, they may be able to move Pace or even Bowens inside, but it would ultimately ruin a season that we were all looking forward to. Darrell Revis --- our only shutdown corner. He goes down, & 2008 will turn into a f--king shooting gallery.
Most Expendable Barret- this guy has shown nothing but the ability to be mediocre to horrible Thomas- Bust that eats up money and a roster spot Expendable now with Pace and Gholston Chad- He's beyond done, its time to hand over the reins Musa Smith or Chatman- Too many runnningbacks and one is doomed to be cut Bender- I know people are going to kill me but in a year where our offensive line was HORRIBLE, he couldnt sniff the field. I think if he doesnt show flashes in TC we should cut the cord Least Expendable Revis- Shutdown top flight corner at a very young age too. Rhodes- Easily Top 5 Safety that is a playmaker D'Brick- Has shown flashes of Dominance, with better cast around him i see him taking the next jump. Mangold- Best young center in the game Jenkins- Having a real NT will do wonders for our 3-4 this year
I agree with your 5 most expendable, but I'd replace Cotchery with Mangold. Not that I dont like Cotch, because I do. It's just that I think Mangolds spot and talent level are harder to replace.
I never thought he would be a future #1 for us, or any team. Kurt just read the question. That is all I and others are answering. I feel the team would not take a big loss if Smith was not on the team, especially after last year. Hopefully those who feel like me are wrong.
You are quite right to figure bench depth into answering this question, except there is so little bench strength at a number of positions you don't mention. That would include OG, Qb (assuming Clemens starts - with Chad on the roster that's no depth there, either), wideout - even if Stuckey proves out, the rest of the guys are likely camp cuts, safety - after Rhodes the Jets don't have a solid starter alongside him.
Smith will be on the team. he is a valuable player, and should contribute as a #4 WR this year. Problem is he had a nice rookie season, and everyone expected him to step up next year and be a star. He didn't, so now he must die
