Even then...do you realize how many great coaches sucked worse than Mangini has over his first 2 seasons? Woody did alot to get this guy, and Mangini was the consensus candidate as HC by just about everyone significant at the time. I doubt he gets just 3 seasons. It would do alot more hurt than good. This is thrown out if the players turn against him. From what we've all read and heard from everyone not named Chris Baker or Coles earlier in the offseason, he's very well liked. This coaching staff is extremely young, but also dedicated and seriously not intimidated by their new jobs. I really wouldn't see much reason to let any of them go even if we sucked next year, because all/most of these guys will have a job real fast somewhere else. If you look at the little big things within the organization...set philosophy...managing the cap well...not backing down with a player until they've fully assessed everything...very good drafting...disiciplined play...team doesn't give up...all have been there. Thats a good question...if our "big 3" young coach/decider guys (Tannenbaum, Mangini, Schott) were fired because the team only wins like 5-6 games...even less...how long do you think it'd be before they had a significant job anywhere else?
Now that I think of it, if the Jets beat the Raiders in the 2002 playoffs and was the team to play against the Bucs instead of Oakland in the SB, the Jets may have been the embarrassment of the league during the 21st century. Thanks for beating us.
I second that....isn't there a Raiders fan site somewhere, or do you have to go through some sort of strange initiation with some silly halloween mask on.
If the question is what Woody is likely to do, who knows. If the question is what minimum number of wins should get Mangini another year, I don't see how five is acceptable. Yeah, if Clemens sucks and they have to go with Penny, then that should be hung on the FO, but the FO has given the team a lot of help everywhere else but #2 corner and #3 wr. The schedule should help. Harris and Revis should be starters from opening day, and they are an upgrade. Robertson's departure is addition by subtraction. The new people brought in are all upgrades, in Faneca's case about as big an upgrade as is possible in the NFL. If 5 wins with this roster is acceptable, then how can people think the FO has been doing a good job putting it together? I say less than seven wins, its time to question whether this regime has long term potential. Six maybe he gets a push, but that is it, and no one should feel good about that if that comes to pass.
The 21st century is very young but the Raiders have actually knocked the Jets out of the playoffs twice in this embarassing century.
DWare, I believe yours is an excellent post about the Tangini regime. Well done. This team desparately needed long-term, clear-eyed and tough-minded commitment. When Parcells' "PLAN" fell apart not once but twice, and Herm decided to turn tail for home, the NYJs were left in shambles. There is nothing worse for a team of athletes than when the coaching staff abandons THEM. I mean, first Bellichick, then Groh, then Edwards...what a punch out...! This team has had to learn how to behave as if it BELONGS in the NFL, because it was a damned orphan whose rejection by its primary minders was reinacted and reinforced repeatedly. I don't think Mangini or Tannenbaum has been perfect by any means. But as you've well-stated, they have brought a lot of what's needed to the table. Woody Johnson seems willing to back them wholeheartedly. So we have a chance now, for the NYJs to begin to build a tradition of winning. One season up and one season down, fits and starts, has to be overcome. It's a tall order to get out of mediocrity in the NFL, since mediocrity is forceably maintained by the "parity" versus the "strength of schedule" yin and yang the NFL yo-yo's its teams with. Breaking out of the reinforced herd to become a champion is harder in the prosperous NFL than perhaps in any other sports league. Gauging this from year to year based on the combined frustration of the fan's own tenure is perhaps just irrelevant. You have to look what this regime's plan is and what they get accomplished over the "long" run. My guess is that Tannenbaum and Mangini had to present Woody Johnson with a five-year plan along with their critical path alternatives along the way to get this corporate scion to commit the kind of bucks he just dished out.
I kinda have to agree. We don't have any idea how the upcoming season will be yet. We don;t even know who the QB is; let alone our victory count. On paper, we look better to much better than last year, but we still have to play.
I'll tell you what Jeaux... Mangini has a far better shot of remaining a Jet HC than your what's his name? does for the Raiders? You guys roll over coaches faster than Al changes his depends. :drunk:
Just in case anyone is feeling especially paranoid as of this evening, there ain't no effing chance in hell that Mangini and company are in jeopardy of losing their jobs during or after the 2008 NFL football season. Nuff said.
Haven't both teams had 5 coaches in the last 10 years? Gruden, Callahan, Turner, Shell, and Kiffin for the Raiders, Parcells, Belichick (for 10 minutes), Groh, Herm, and Mangini for the Jets.
please name some of the other teams who wanted mangini? i'm not exactly sure who, but i believe the jets were not set on mangini from the get go. for the life of me why would any team want a guy with such little experience?
