I think our offense, regardless of who the quaterback is, is gonna struggle all year long. The defense needs to be dominant for us to reach the playoffs! Wouldnt it be nice to watch our team just crush opposing quaterbacks, and actually stop the run? I think its possible, what do you think?
I watched Jets 17, Raiders 14 from 1982 today, and it was a pleasure to watch a dominant, physical defense. It wasn't just the defensive line that hit, it was our linebackers Mehl, Buttle and Blinka and our secondary Holmes, and Schroy laying the wood. I'm ready to have a defense like that again. I think the Jets offense will be significantly better this year, built on a strong running game, intelligent play action and better than average pass protection. Good things ahead. Eleven Wins...mark it down.
I agree our offense should be better this year. Not by much though. We have a QB competition, lackluster offensive threats (from what I can see now), and the right side of our OL will most likely suffer all year long. Hopefully our weaker schedule will hide a lot of our flaws until next year when we can correct them. EDIT: Actually, that might be a bad thing. I hate weaker schedules because you can never be to sure how bad something is, unless you are playing against top notch teams on a consistent basis. Then you have a false idea of what you have, just to have a year like we did last year. None of us realized how bad we were at OL until we made a mistake in letting Kendall go because we thought we had more then we really did apparently. Good choices...
Haha, Ken Schroy. A fro and a goatee back in the day. Didn't Stan Blinka get suspended once? I seem to recall that, but I can't recall what it was for.
agreed. if jenkins can play and hold the nose, then we can rotate around him and let our lb's control the line of scrimmage. big if, but we are young and our best players are on that side of the ball. let's just hope that mangini can find our qb before we find a new hc.
Thats what scares me- a good coach who couldn't find a quality QB and that hurts how we remember the Mangini Era. I hope that there is someone who can start all 16 games and be a leader and a master at the 2 minute drill. With the Defense in place its the last piece to the puzzle.
we are a defensive team and they need to be at the top of the league. If we don't have a dominating D we can kiss our playoff chances goodbye because we don't have a good enough offense to carry us.
I hope you are right Abyzmul, its all on jenkins to me, if he cant hold the point of attack then the rest of the defense doesnt matter. We will get run over again this year! I hope Pouha can give him some help!
You are absolutely correct. The true factor involved in the success of the team this season, while the O-line moves were very heartening, is Kris Jenkins. The guy needs to be not only a true NT capable of freeing up the playmakers on the front 7, he has to be a playmaker on the front 7. That is a hard thing to do. I am not sure Shaun Rogers would have been capable of that, and I am glad we didn't trade for that guy. And he may end up proving me wrong, but I stand by my claim. Kris Jenkins was the dream pickup for this team. You and every other Jets fan are going to be singing his praises before long, and that makes me happy. I had the same feeling about the impact of a young Kerry Rhodes, and again when Darrelle Revis lined up across from Randy Moss during his first game.
Blinka was suspended for a game for close lining John Jefferson of the Packers as he was running his route.
i sure would love a defense that was on sportscenter every week cause they blew someone up. i am sure even at the pro level it puts a little bit of something in the opposing offensive players heads. the offense really is dependant on the qb play, i really think that the jets will be able to run the ball pretty well. i am fairly confident that the right side of the line will be ok, not dominant but serviceable. if one of the qbs can play consistent this team will have a chance to do some things this year. while i hope that clemens steps up and takes the reigns i think that either one of these guys can do the job this year. it isnt necessary to have the indy offense to win in this league. i am really growing more confident by the day, more confident of this team than i have been in a number of years. god i hope im not wrong
I'm very confident in our defense this year. On paper, we have a good DL now, a very good linebacking corps, and a secondary with talent. We don't have a bona fide safety opposite Rhodes or a cornerback opposite Revis, but we have enough talent at both spots competing for the job that hopefully people step up. I think that we can have a very good defense. The offense is what I'm worried about. We lack any dynamic skill players on offense. Cotchery, Coles, TJ, Washington, Baker: they're all fine players, but none of them scare a defense at all.
I think that reared its head most notably in pre-season practices, didn't it? For real though, I think you're QB will need a good defense regardless of who it is. If it's Clemens then you don't want to put too much pressure on him and you need to expect there will be growing pains. The defense will be called on to keep you in games. If the QB is Pennington then you know he has to play within himself. Pennington won't lose games for you if you don't ask him to go beyond his (limited) skill set. If your defense plays well Chad can manage games and work the shorter passing routes and checkdowns. You also need to look within your division. Buffalo has some good offensive weapons in the newly drafted James Hardy (a guy I wanted the Giants to pick up) and their other WR talent. They also have a beast of an RB in Marshawn Lynch. You need to rush their young QB Edwards and contain Lynch to win. Their defense is good, but it won't win games on its own. Your special teams can also hang with theirs. The Patriots are the team to beat in your division. As a team very near and dear to my heart showed in the Super Bowl, you need to pressure Brady to beat them. This becomes even more crucial and useful if you bottle up the run as well. Their D is getting older and their secondary is questionable. I think you are building a smash mouth team with a powerful but slow offense and an aggressive defense. I absolutely agree that your D must be dominant for you to have success. You could still make the playoffs with average D, but you won't win an AFC playoff game without good defensive football.
Jets defense is not in place. You have more holes than swiss cheese on that defense. Your Raiderjeaux your defense. Stop it because yoiu know I am going to be revisted this thread at some point next season..(what went so wrong)
Of course we will revisit this thread for better or worse later in the season, and of course raiderjeaux be absent just last last season when the Raiders tanked and your predictions made you look foolish.
Well than KISS your playoff chances goodbye. Jets don't have any chance to have a dominating defense next season. Look who your number 2 and # 3 CBs are. Who your safety opposite Rhodes. There is still legitimate questions how good your lbs will be in coverage. How good will Jets pass rush be. Calvin Pace best sack year he had 6 1/2 sacks. Thats not going to get it done at OLb in 3-4. Kris Jenkins at 360 pounds is going to get worn out pretty fast, so Pouha(is he thirty years old yet) better be ready to step up ,or your going to have same problems as last year on defense. Can Kris Jenkins survive playing against Denver and Raiders olines. They are going to stretch that fat boy out (make him move all along the Dline, and than boom they are going to cut block him at his knees. There is a reason Raiders don't use their full blocking technique when practicing against their own Dline. The risk of injury too great.
