The problem is they were cheating in '00 and the first 2 games of '01 when Bledsoe was QB yet they stunk during that time and the fortunes of the franchise changed when Brady stepped on the field in 2001.
If we listen to what Belichick has been saying, the information they gained from taping was used in future games. Being 2000 is when he started taping, it may have taken a little while to amass enough information on the other teams to show some benefit. They also had to get the players on board, specifically the player who was relaying in what defense was coming. It also may have taken a little time for Belichick to refine his cheating ways. I still stand behind what I said, we will never know because in my eyes every game he has played in is tainted. I have brought this up before and others have mentioned last year and the success they had. With their previous success which was enhanced by the illegal taping they have been able to bring players in that they may not have been able to otherwise, Randy Moss is a prime example of this. They were able to get him well below market value which enabled them to utilize the money saved on other players. He is just one example but there are many others that went there for less than they could have received elsewhere. This in essence gave them a larger salary cap than other teams even if it was the same $ amount. They were able to get 2 or 3 players for what it would have cost other teams to get 1. This enabled them to stack players at every position thus when the taping was exposed and stopped they still had the personel to win as they did last year.
Maybe that's true but the Pats were instantly better in 2002 the moment Brady stepped on the field. Bledose couldn't do anything against us all game then Brady comes in and all of a sudden the Pats are moving the ball and we win 10-3 as the game ended at our 2 yard line.
Going back to the OP, I can't see how Brady has not known about the cheating, and he clearly has benefitted from it. I am not saying he cannot play the game, but his rep has been damaged as much as the rest of this sorry assed cheating team. That being the case, for HIM to say he does not respect the Jets is laughable. Career ending injury is hopefully due this season for him.
Junc, You saying they stunk has nothing to do with it..its like a burglary gone wrong..its still cheating or illegal. I couldnt care less if the Patriots were 0-16...if it didnt help them...if they were terrible at cheating. They cheated. Whats the difference between a guy that cheats on his wife and gets caught..or the guy that doesnt. They cheated. Whether it helped them win..lose...or whatever is not even the issue. When you cheat, others can refer to any accomplishments you achieved during that time period as unfair and without merit. End of story. They cheated. They got caught. They won superbowls by the difference of field goals. Thats enough for me to think it COULD have made a difference. What they did allows me as a sports fan to say at loud you havent been able to win playing by everyone elses rules. Their act gives me that permission and they just have to live with it. So everyone can just say "let it go". Their actions allow me not to let it go. Not my fault.
I'm not saying they didn't cheat or that it didn't help them I am saying the Pats were a completely different team the moment Brady stepped on the field. For people to say he was made b/c of cheating isn't a fair statement.
Brady's numbers his first year were not great. He had a good completion percentage but his TD to INT ratio was the lowest of his career. In 2001 the Pats had one of the best D's in the league, I think this had more to do with the turn around from 2000 to 2001 when they were a middle of the pack D.
I agree with that. He is a GREAT qb. Roger Clemens was a great pitcher. The Black Sox were a great baseball team. If we want to debate, we can debate little cheating and big cheating. Thats nonsense though. His resume is one that says Great qb....incredible arm...great accuracy...was part of a team that cheated during their 3 superbowl victories. Thats the only way to look at it. He could have turned to his head coach and say "I think this is wrong". To be honest..if EM was part of it, he could have done the same thing. Lets not be homers here. But the subject is Brady. One of the greatest qb of all time was part of a cheat system. Thats the resume. If he doesnt like it, then he should have opened up his mouth...but he didnt.
What I remember about that first SB Pats team was that they played "team football". There were no big superstuds and the defense got a lot of the credit for helping them win. Brady no doubt did his part, but back then he was less the superstar he is now and more of a reliable QB who did not make a lot mistakes, unlike Bledsoe.
Brady who? Never heard of him. Couldn't pick him out of a line up. haha but seriously for Tom to take a swipe at the jets speaks volumes. The only thing worse the being dissed is being ignored. For Brady to take time away from his g/f's waxed vulva & rectum to mention the j-e-t-s says we're on his mind, even when he's banging his girl. i wonder how many times he's gone limp worrying about pace and gholston coming from the 'back side'?
#s don't always tell the story, the #s that count were 11-3 and that was the Pats record when Brady started in '01(another 3-0 in postseason). Belichick had his great defensive mind in Cle w/ little success and in NE in '00 and the beginning of '01 but he never had real success until Brady stepped on the field.
Brady has had a little crash and burn the last 3 years with arguably the best team in football other than SD going into the playoffs. He stunk in Denver, was totally outplayed by both Mannings and in both cases had the better team. Throw in the cheating and there's just a tiny bit of tarnish on the silver. If Brady was a stock, he clearly has peaked and it's time to sell. Look for Geiselle to unload him sometime during the 09 season.
we do cuz its our team and i think he realized he put his foot in his mouth and tried to play it off. either way you guys will lose. no more buying superbowls.
You're falling into the champ "Super Bowl or Bust" mentality. The guy has won three Super Bowls and walked off the field in the last one after driving his team to the go-ahead score. Not to mention his team was 18-0 when they got there and was the most dominant passing team of this generation. Nobody wins every year, I don't know what some of you people expect. There are 32 teams all trying to do the same thing, only one per year can do it. It doesn't mean the other 31 are no good.
what jet fan doesnt join in on brady/pat bashing. especially when winston takes the initiative. how dare you kind sir, how dare you
Sorry, I realize logic and reality has no place on TGG when bashing a QB. Winston is right, Brady is finished, he needs to be replaced so the Pats can get to "the next level."
Who cares what Tom Brady says? I mean, really. It's not like the guy has the gift of prophecy or anything. That would be ChampionJets69.
no i was being lighthearted. i think you took me wrong lol. bradys good but theres always the school of thought floating around. im sorry i dont think the pats and their players should get a pass simply because they have a winning resume. sure you can make the argument even if they were effectively cheating the players still have to execute the plays to win. ok thats good and all but football becomes easier by tenfold if you have a x's and o's heads up. thats all im saying. and with stallworth gone their wonderful spread attack allows people to focus on welker more. also maroneys best year appears to have been his rookie year while rotating with dillon. my ultimate point in case is the patriots dont scare anyone anymore. they really dont. their larger than life stature of a franchise is tarnished. that doesnt mean they suck cuz thatd be dumb to say. but ultimately i think youll see the beginning of the end of the storybook franchise. either way the whole scandal has been nothing more than a sweeping under the rug for the benefit of the nfls marketing dept. who wants to buy cheaters jerseys? are we more pissed about it cuz its a rival team? yes. but it makes most sense to be bothered about this because of the possible political implications it poses being the Pats became the face of the league in this decade.
Where did I say Brady was finished? Logic and reality about QB being finished are in the Chad threads. Brady has lost a little bloom off the Rose with some very mediocre performaces in big games over the last couple of years. Some people who aren't NE Patriot suck ups might go as far as saying he choked in some big games. Some might even say it's 4 years since the Pats or Tom Brady won a SB.
