Not to take anything from you, Dware, but you are giving credit to wrong people - Rhodes was Mangini's first class of draft along with D'Brick and Mangold. He didn't inherit Rhodes from Herm - Herm never had an eye for such a talent, nor guts to test the talent.
Yea, I've decided to give credit to Herm/Bradway on this one. Rhodes was definitely one of the more exciting talents they drafted. Even in '05 you could see this friggin long, tall, fast rookie flying all over the field. Still, he definitely broke out big time under Mangini.
I think that the press conferences in the off season are pretty innocuous, and really shouldn't be expected to be anything else. The CS and FO are hard at work developing and deploying their strategy for the coming year. I would be most disappointed if they divulged what they were thinking of doing and how it was progressing. I think it should be clear that the press conference is reviewed not just by a team's eager fans but also its very hungry opponents for anything that could be helpful. Most people realize that when a player (like Jonathan Josephs) shoots his mouth off about what tendencies they noticed and what they decided to do about it, the CS kicks their ass for the rest of the season. They have to go in the bathroom and practice a SILENT shit-eating grin for four hours before they're allowed to go home at night. There is nothing to be gained for the team for a CS member or a FO executive to tell you what he's really thinking about anything. Why would they hurt the team just for some momentary grins from the "Peanut Gallery"?

dude....this thread is not a valid argument.....anybody with an iota of intelligence knows why the Jets FO doesn't "tip their hand" at the whim of the fans....the mgmt isn't stupid. So why would this so-called argument be brought up in the first place..it's ludicrous. I believe the guy who started this thread would've been better served if he would've "talked to himself along the sidewalk" regarding this.
I didnt have the energy to read this entire thread, but I've been a fan for nearly 30 years and judging by past Jets administrations I think it is too early to be "getting tired" of anything just yet. I think 2008 is building up to be a pivotal year for the Front Office, Coaches and Players. I think every team deserves one mulligan and last year was it ... there must be significant improvement in 2008 and that does not always translate into a ton of wins, but at least a few more wins and more consistent play on the field. I would be ok with a 7-9 season as long as they stayed in all the games and didnt show any glaring weaknesses. If you read my comment you are a better man than I.
Djak, I would never argue with you on this. Only disgruntled press passes regularly gripe about these public affairs get-togethers. Still, those hungry fans that want red meat at such a dietary demonstration need to hear the gospel according to Djak and others of us. So we tell them. Now and then, some interesting side issues accrue as well. Hence my comment to the caption on that mis-begotten picture of the Special Olympics.
Can't you just hear the CS sitting down with their cups of coffee last off-season and discussing the draft. "Is there anybody else you would love bring in to work with?" The resounding answer was "No!" So we took Harris and Revis and a couple of backups. They got something done last year toward their plan -- but pretty damned far from what they wanted to. This year, they seem to explode all over the off-season -- throwing money around and getting six picks, too, so far. I feel that all this activity is being driven by the same question: "Is there anybody available you would love bring in to work with?" It's the personnel that are available that they are responding to, it seems like. The CS and thus the FO really like these guys enough to commit with it takes in money and effort to get them up to speed. We haven't seen this many serious commitments out of this CS and FO before during their short tenure. This is a great thing that they have committed themselves so totally (a couple hundred million dollars worth of new commitment on this roster, so far and it's not over) to realizing their vision of the team. There's damned few other commitments out there at this level. Perhaps you could say that is because other teams are in nearly so much trouble as the NYJs have been in for such a long time. Who else has so many holes? That's hard to argue with, except these guys are doing everything they really believe they can to build a winner. And I'm pretty sure that if the CS and the FO come up with another idea, that Woody Johnson will back it wholeheartedly too. Let's see what happens...wish it was tomorrow. Man, the thing I really love about Mangini and Tannenbaum is that their ACTIONS speak so much louder than their WORDS do.

Tannenbaum drives me crazy when he gets interviewed. He never answers the question that is asked...it's alwasy some BS fluff. If I was the programming director at SNY I would can is weak ass boring show he has during the season. It's about as vanilla as vanilla gets. I also hate the fact that he always starts each answer with...Well Steve (or whoever is interviewing), that is a very good question. Than he proceeds with his non answers. The guy is just plain BORING.
Yeah, instead of guys who know what they're doing yet keep it close to the vest like Mangini and Tanenbaum, I long for the days again of a guy like Herm who knows absolutley nothing and has no plan or systems of his own but, rambles on and on nicely.... Yes, I am crazy. Yeah, I am back, even though a lot of posters attacked me. Thing is, I still believe what I believe. Herm Edwards did a decent job coaching the Jets, he got them into the playoffs almost every year and that's all you can ask for or expect. So he left behind a playoff-calibre football team behind when he was kicked out by Woody Johnson, and I happen to think he was a good coach--but then again, coaches have a short shelf life so I think he left at a good time. But since his last season was ruptured by key injuries (those freak injuries to Chad and this backup two plays later would have killed ANY coach), I do not hold this against him. It will be very interesting to see how he does in Kansas City with the Chiefs (where they have a tradition of winning) and how Mangini does in NYC (where we have a tradition of losing--something Edwards tried to address more than once). As a fan of the NY Jets, I always appreciated Herm Edwards' candid approach--his honesty and his straight talk. Mangini? I think his allegiance to the Belichek system will prove to be his undoing. So, we shall see.
