Well, if you were judging a pitcher's skill, which pitcher would you think performed better during the season: 21 W - 3.86 ERA - 1.45 WHIP 19 W - 3.19 ERA - 1.10 WHIP I'd take Pitcher 2 every time. Wins are the stat that depends least on any specific pitcher's performance. Pitcher 2 could have less wins because the bullpen coughed up more leads than pitcher 1's bullpen. Or because the offense scored more runs. Or both.
In that case, I don't care what "intangibles" a pitcher allegedly has. Pitcher 1 could be the grittiest, most hard-nosed, true-ace-like, competitor that the world has ever seen, with a belly full of guts to boot. Pitcher 2 is still a better pitcher, all other things (like run support) being equal. Besides, all those intangibles should be reflected in WHIP and - to a lesser degree - ERA. ETA: King Felix is no match for the resurgence of the Moose.
Of course, humor being notoriously subjective in any medium and compounded by the difficultly to quantify it via the internet and all. No need to be sorry. I'm not resorting to smilies for your benefit, though.
how are our Yankees looking today. All I can see is the score, but it looks like were hitting the ball.
Another strong outing by Mussina. Yikes. This is three in a row. And actually... I just looked at his game log, he's really only had one truly bad outing (the second one against Boston). IP -- ER 5.2 - 3 6.0 - 1 5.2 - 4 3.0 - 5 7.0 - 2 5.0 - 2 6.0 - 1
Numbers on Cano, last year vs. this year... tells you he's gotta be coming out of this slump soon: Cano.... 2007--- 2008 BB%..... 5.9--- 6.2 K%.... 13.8--- 13.2 LD% ....16.9 ---17.4 GB%.... 52.2 ---51.1 FB%.... 30.9--- 31.5 Striking out a bit less. Walking a bit more. Hitting more line drives. It'll come. Eventually.
Moose was awesome yesterday. Yes, I said he was awesome. Early in the game I was in the car, and Sterling and Waldman were discussing Moose. He's changed his approach to pitching. Rather than trying to force things, he just throws out whatever isn't working that day now. That was always my biggest problem with Moose. He would throw his fastball, at a blazing 82 MPH, no matter how many times it was sent into the seats. So now he's adjusting, and if his fastball doesn't have "it" that day, he just doesn't throw it. If he keeps that up, he's going to win a lot of games this year. As for Cano, he's not even looking at the ball at this point. Like my father used to tell me: "You can't hit it if you can't see it".
I can't believe Rasner won't be better than Kennedy would have been today. Too bad he is going up against Seattle's best pitcher.
