Only one full season as well... I was a huge Chad supporter until last year. I'll stop here, I don't want another 8 pages of Pennington debating. I personally would like to see a new signal caller.
it is unrealistic for me blame a qb on how our success is going to be next season. i believe chad or kellen are capable in handing the ball off to our rb's and our success on the ground will dictate our passing game, no running game = no passing game.
I've gotten to the point in my life where performance is really all that matters. I hear where you are coming from on what might have caused all the problems with the D in the first two years and in Mangini's year as DC in New England. It's all very rational and well thought out and it has merit. However I'm still not going to believe Mangini can make this 3-4 work until it is actually working. I've seen too much over the last three years that suggests that he basically doesn't have the stones to make it work. Think about the quality of the players he had at New England and what the results were. Yes, the defensive backs were hurt that year, but with the kind of pass rush that New England brings you could have trained chimpanzees back there and they'd do about as well as his defensive backfield did that year.
You guys talk as if we didn't get any better. Those same if's that you state about the Jets can happen to any of the other teams in our division. We have improved with the additions on the offensive and defensive lines and with our schedule we should do alot better than last year. By that I mean second in our division. You guys are so negative about your own team and positive about others. We have talent, but we just didn't have good play on either side of the line last year. If the defense can start out like they did the second half of the season we'll be fine. I also think TJ will have a very good year with this new o-line. I still think we're a cb away from a really good defense and some more depth at nose.
Mangini is not a Fire-and-Brimstone Bobby Knight clone but I do believe that he is a very driven coach who made and 3-4 work during the first year by wrapping it with duct tape ala McGyver. I am hopeful that with all the new players brought in (that fit the system better), Mangini will be able to produce better results. In that regard, I can understand and respect your hesitancy.
How can anyone know if we're better than we were 2 years ago? No one can know anything until the season starts. Even pre-season is no true indicator of a team's future performance. Hope springs for Jets fans in the off season. Let's wait and see what happens in the Fall.
NE - Will likely go 14-2, if not 15-1. In the scenario of a serious early season injury to Brady, then 12-4, 13-3 is more likely. BUF - Always ultra hyped, never really meet expectations. There is a reason they are always so hyped though and it's because they have an ultra talented roster. I say their ceiling is 11-5, but 8-8 or 9-7 is more likely. NYJ - Much improved but OL depth and QB questions don't put us in. I predict the Jets at 7-9 or 8-8 in a better but not great season. MIA - This is a major work in progress. People are completely overrating the effect Parcells will have with the on the field product and don't pay attention to the fact that their roster still sucks massive balls. 3-13 to 4-12 for Miami.
Yes, Asante Samuel emerged that year to become a strong corner. Ty Law was gone after the season to the Jets mainly because Belichik was sure he had a #1 guy to replace him.
My gut tells me that one of two things will likely happen next season. Either the Jets will find a QB who works and avoid the major injury bug again, in which case the standings should look so: New England 13-3 New York 9-7 Miami 7-9 Buffalo 5-11 Or the Jets will struggle at the QB position, and/or have injury problems and the standings will look like this: New England 13-3 Miami 9-7 Buffalo 7-9 New York 4-12 Which it's going to be I don't know but nobody is beating out the Patriots next season and I strongly doubt that anybody but the Pats will make the playoffs either.
With the players we've added and how soft our schedule is, there is no way the Jets only win 4 games. I though this thread was called "lets be real here...?" worst case scenario: 6-10 best case scenario: 12-4 what I'll call: 10-6
Quote: "...Or the Jets will struggle at the QB position, and/or have injury problems..." The QBs -- either of them -- will have problems if the OL does not dominate the line of scrimmage. Either of the QBs will have a hard time escaping the injury "bug" if the OL does not dominate. If the NYJs consistently focus on the OL and the defense, then the skill players will have a much better chance to do well. Our skill player injury problems have a lot to do with the OL's lack of protection, and the absence of a consistently powerful running game. Given the time, protection, and a great running game, the QBs will do fine, in my view. If the rest of the team doesn't play well, the QBs don't have a chance in hell... just like last year.
umm lets all remember we dont have anything that you can confident to be close to solid at the most important position on the field. qb lets also remember that the jets cs put them in a situation where the announcers were calling the plays when we lined up last year. you can add all the talent in the world but if you dont have a qb to run the offense and the other team knows what you are going to do before you do it you are pretty much screwed. hopefully one of the qbs will step up and play well this year, and hopefully the cs starts running things a little better on gameday. these 2 questions will be the difference between 6-10 and 10-6.
I think we're going to make the playoffs. I don't expect much else, but this is a team that lost 7 games by a touchdown or less. If we were to win a playoff game, it wouldn't surprise me. Everyone is killing our quarterbacks but they were good enough to keep us in every game last year. With an improved gameplan that mixes in more Leon and the addition of Keller as a legitimate threat down the middle with an improved offensive line, we should be able to score a few mroe points a game. -X-

BS offensive strategy needs an OL that can successfully block for an overwhelming running game. If the running game does not work because the OL is getting blasted at the line of scrimmage, then the play-fakes are laughed at. If the OL can't block for the run, then they certainly can't block for the pass. The QB has to get rid of the ball, faster and faster. This means shorter routes -- fewer routes as well. As the defense crushes the OL, the options become fewer, and the skill players are simply cancelled from the field. I do not think this has anything to do with a John Elway hero. John Elway would have been flat of his back with a broken arm or fibia behind that OL of the NYJs in 07. Just like any other QB who was hapless enough to have to play behind them. QBs are worthless if nobody blocks for them -- no matter how good they are. Brady got hit 23 times in the SB, although he only was formally sacked 5 times. The leader of the greatest offensive engine the NFL has seen in modern times was done in. ...by a defense that stymied his offensive line. Without Big Uglies that are winning the game, there just ain't no magic. -- LET'S BE REAL HERE......
After six season Pennington is 32-29 as a starter with three playoff appearances and a 2-3 playoff record including the Jets first road playoff win since 1983. He was 8-4 in 2002 and 1-1 in the playoffs He was 4-5 in 2003 He was 8-5 in 2004 and 1-1 in the playoffs He was 1-2 in 2005 He was 10-6 in 2006 and 0-1 in the playoffs He was 1-7 last year. During the same period of time with the same players, other Jet QBs are 11-24 with no playoff appearance. Yes there are questions about Pennington as there are with Clemens, but last year's team was so horrible, from the OL to the defense, that you can just throw it out. Let's see how our QBs do with this new improved team. As for how the Jets will do this year, I am not expecting a division title. I don't see the Pats falling that far that fast. I think we should expect and should see marked improvement. 7+ wins would be progress.
What is Pennington's record post shoulder surgery? In 04 Crack head had a better winning % than Pennington, in 07 Clemens had a better winning % than Pennington. Basically the other Jets QB who Chad had a better record than was Vinny post achiles tendon in his late 30's and Brooks Bollinger. Both Quincy Carter and Clemens in the same years with the same teams had better records than Chad. Chad has a lossing record since his shoulder surgery.
keep chad and kellen, we have one qb that is far past his prime and injury prone, as a poster above stated 33-29 in 6 years is not what i call fantastic. we have another qb who has PROVED NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! let me state it again PROVED NOTHING!!!!!!!! other than the fact he can in fact have the lowest passer rating in the league. the OL has nothing to do with lining the hb up 8 yards deep and running the ball every single fucking time to the point where the announcers were calling what play it was going to be. i dont give a fuck if you have god almighty on the line when the defense knows what is coming they will tend to stop it. i WANT this team to do good, i am also REALISTIC of some of the issues that are still there. HOPEFULLY yes HOPEFULLY one of the qbs stands up this year and plays well. HOPEFULLY the cs took their head out of their ass and doesnt line up and run the same play adnauseam.
