Off the field issues? Low football intelligence? Low football desire? Really, what is it? If this guy is so f----g great, why didn't the Dolphins take him? Why won't the Rams, Falcons, Raiders or Chiefs take him? And if you're answer is, "Well, they already have good running backs," then why should the Jets take McFadden when we have two very good running backs, and gaping holes at pass rush and in the secondary? This guy will get the Jets national press, he will not move them any closer to a championship. Read the tea leaves, he's going to be a Pro Bust and the Jets should steer wide.
Rams have Stephen Jackson (mad money). Dolphins have Ronnie Brown (mad money). Falcons just paid Michael Turner mad money. The Raiders have 17 RBs. The Chiefs paid Larry Johnson mad money. There. These aren't true btw. As far as off the field issues, just look at the problems his family had and how he came out. Don't judge.
Ridiculous question. Didn't AD go #7 last year? Teams have different needs and wants. I guess only great players get picked in the top 5 eh?
Mia - Ronnie Brown; StL - Steven Jackson; Atl -Michael Turner; Oak - Great depth, but we know he could go here; KC - Larry Johnson. The thing is those teams have good YOUNG runningbacks. The Jets leading rusher is going to be 30 at the start of the season, and let's face it, Leon is a playmaker, but he's not a guy you want to be your starting runningback.
Thomas Jones is going to be 30 this year. His best days are behind him. Leon Washington is not very good. He's good, a nice change-of-pace runner. Washington is not a guy who can carry the ball 15-20 times a game for 16 weeks. Jesse Chatman is just a backup, a fringe player. Again, he's not very good. The Jets are in need of a dynamic runner.
Why not? Why not Leon getting the bulk of the carriers and let TJ being the change of pace back? Don't tell me he can't take the punishment...we heard the same stories about guys like Priest Holmes and Charlie Garner. It's not how big the back is, but how tough he is, and how elusive he is. Washington can dodge the big hits.
I'm not saying McFadden has low IQ or football desire, and I really don't give a shit about off-field issues--in my view, the Jets have too many choir boys, they're too soft--so I actually like the badass aspect of McFadden. Addressing your first point, the Jets also have good RBs and have also spent a ton of money this offseason. All the more reason to choose a potential ProBowl at a position of need.
Dats like asking why the sun goes down at night time come on man...like Cotch said other teams have RB filled with pretty good players already its based on needs.
Taking you all on, Cakes... Thomas Jones is a young 30, splitting half his carries in Chicago, and as for Washington, you can see my response saying that I believe he can be an everydown back and that he is that good. The Jets may benefit from an upgrade at RB, but their biggest need is a dynamic pass rusher.
I don't like the selection, for the record. However, if the Jets do take McFadden, I will root very hard for him to prove me totally wrong, and I will happily eat crow.
If for no other reason, Leon is a liability as a blocker. If you use him as the primary back he will eventually have to pass block. The idea that he can be another Holmes or Garner or Westbrook is wishful thinking. It's this over-reliance on borderline players which keeps our offense in a funk. People like to dump all the blame on the O-line, but even when we have good O-lines our offense is still just OK at best. If the Jets have a shot at McFadden no way can they pass it up because of Leon and TJ.
It's also because I have little confidence in Vernon Gholston ever being a good NFL player. I want Matt Ryan, Chris Long, or McFadden. I also like Jonathan Stewart, but it would be bad value to select him at 6. I don't know that there is any such thing as a young 30 or an old 30. The Jets don't stretch the field vertically enough to allow Washington to be what you think he can be. Garner had his best years when Jeff Garcia was throwing passes to Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens and Rich Gannon was throwing passes to Rice and Tim Brown. Holmes had his best years when Trent Green was throwing for close to 4000 yards a season to players such as Tony Gonzalez, Johnnie Morton, and Eddie Kennison. The Jets crappy short passing game is not ideal for a finesse back such as Washington.
I respectfully disagree with this point. McFadden fills the Jets biggest need, in my opinion. No, not running back........but offensive playmaker. The Jets don't have one.
Exactly what he said. Our biggest need is a dynamic pass rusher, we saw what the Giants did last season to Tom Brady. Theres no way the Jets front office if even thinking about drafting McFadden. I dont believe it for one minute. Since when is an offensive "playmaker" a need? If you have a solid offense you're fine. Defense wins championships, and if we want a chance at beating NE it wont be because of our offense.
i still think oakland will take him at 4...gholston is our guy...our team leader in sacks had 5..thats not a lot..we need a pass rusher..not someone whos juss gunna sell jerseys.
Exactly. I dont know what these people are thinking, did you guys watch the Super Bowl? Byran Thomas is not going to get the job done, plain and simple. And if we some how did draft McFadden, which is not happening. Bill Belichick watches tape of him starting Sunday and puts a plan together that shuts him down, NE shuts down every "playmaker" they come up against. The only thing to really stop NE was the Giants pass rush, and considering we are in the same division as them, we're most likely looking at a pass rusher. We need a pass rushing freak badly and we'll get one tomorrow in the first round.
Yes, because Gholston wouldn't be easy to shut down... all he does is rush the QB. And he shows very little technique in that. You run him out of the play and you're done. How good is he in coverage? How well does he handle the non-pass rushing duties of a linebacker? Then again, we don't even need him to play in coverage, we just need him to rush the passer. So we'd be drafting a one-dimensional, situational player at 6. Every player has question marks. Just because pass rush is a bigger need for us than RB doesn't automatically make Gholston a better prospect than McFadden. I am not against drafting Gholston, it's just amazing to me how people try and make that one player they're hoping for out to be the savior and anyone other than him is crap.
mcfadden was great in college, set sec records and have yet to prove himself in the nfl. i hope he can prove that with the jets.
I agree with Cakes on this one...Washington can't carry the load. He's a change of pace/3rd down back. Let him be a speciality player. He's an excellent return man, and every now and then he'll take a screen pass 20-30 yards. Thomas Jones and Darren McFadden would be a very powerful and dangerous combo. Leon Washington would also be effective playing in certain situations.
