well i've been around here for a while with no intention of going anywhere, and if you read my other posts you'd know that i believe that the jets will not draft him, but rather it is a pipe dream of mine. I feel like based on the moves made this offseason, if chris long is gone, that he will be the best person for the pick. Gholston seems to have all the makings of another one of my fellow eagles: Mike Mamula and McFadden is more of a luxery pick with a much higher bust potential than ryan. I am merely trying to figure where the matt ryan hate is stemming from and debunking the many innacuracies about him floating around on this board.
If the FO selects Ryan at No. 6, it is a vote against this team now. It is a vote against the quarterbacks now, and it is a slap in the face of the veterans that have been signed out of free agency. The reason is that Ryan is a ROOKIE. He is a newbie. He has never played a down in the NFL. Everything anybody knows about him comes from the Kiddie Leagues. Whether Ryan's collegiate experience will EVER translate into NFL capabilities remains to be seen -- and probably remains to be seen for at least THREE YEARS. This is what the vantage point of veterans will be for such a move by the FO. Selected a $20 million guaranteed ROOKIE QB out of college says everybody this team views as a leader is now disenfranchised. It is now necessary to sit down and wait for the ROOKIE to catch up with all the veterans and the three point five inch thick NFL playbook and the licking-their-lips "show-me, Rook!" defenses so he can then show this patiently waiting veteran team his wondrous value. Bad news, Rook. This year is on you. And the next one too. And the next one even, too....!
Originally I thought he was overrated, but the "experts" do seem to like him as a pro. Obviously he isn't my first pick for the Jets, but if we end up with him, I'll survive.
Okay... whether Clemens will EVER translate into a good NFL quarterback remains to be seen and whether Pennington will EVER translate into a good NFL quarterback again remains to be seen.
Wow, some of you people are massively overreacting. Obviously, the FO has the best grip of whether or not Kellen has the goods to be our QB. They've seen him infinitely more in practice and such. If they like Ryan enough and think that Kellen may not be the guy, they have to go for it.
I wouldn't be pissed. Shocked, yes. Ryan has the tools to be a great QB in the NFL, and even though I want to go defense, I would be fine with it. I'd rather the F.O. admit they made a mistake with KC (if they so feel that way) than have to deal with a sub-par QB for 3 more years.
QFT. 1. It's WAY too early to call Clemens a bust. 2. QB is not *that* big a need, building the O so a QB can succeed is way more important. 3. We don't need to hand out #6 money and value on a position that we just might have improved by making the moves we made/will make this offseason. If we take a QB, I bet it's Day 2.
I would. I don't think Ryan's that great, as people have mentioned he's pretty inaccurate and those INT numbers scare me. Good leader, good arm but in what I saw of BC I saw too many poor throws. However, the main reason is that Clemens deserves another chance. He showed flashes of potential, and many great QBs started their careers off poorly.
If we were going to draft Ryan then our team was stupid for wasting a pick on Clemens in the 1st place when we had Cutler and Leinart drop right in our laps, giving a guy just one year with a swiss cheese line and little running game along with the baptism rookie QBs go through then I truly do question their evaluation of talent. I want no part of Ryan when we could improve on defense pass rush, add a playmaker on offense or trade down and maybe accomplish both.
Barely passing over 60% of his passes says that he is not an accurate QB, and the amount of passes shows that is more of what he is probably capable of instead of an fluky inaccurate streak
Not me. I'd be thrilled to my toenails to get that kid. He's gonna be a star in this league. I belive Clemens is a decent enough QB, but I don't see him being the kind of QB who can lift a team to greatness. I believe Ryan can be that guy.
Great, rational post. These guys know what they have more than we do. I also cannot agree that the Clemens pick would be a waste if they took Ryan this year. You take a guy and hope he develops. Sometimes he does, and sometimes not. That's just the way it works in teh NFL. It isn't a science, it's a guessing game.
I think I can answer that for you... For a lot of us here, including myself, if you watch video of Matt Ryan's highlights (READ: the best plays he made) he looks very similar to Chad Pennington... NOT to Ben Roethliesberger or Phillip Rivers... The Jets have a history of awful luck, and I wouldn't put it outside of the realm of possibility that the Jets draft Ryan, he sits for a few years, eventually gets put in, lights it up for a few games or even a year, and then tears his rotator cuff... 10 years later we're sitting exactly where we are now. I think a lot of fans are terrified of something like that happening and would probably bail on football if it did. When you watch someone like McFadden, he seems to be more sure-fire in the sense that with some good blocking, he will make plays and be a threat on the field, and he will do it immediately. It will also be less risky because our fall back at RB in case he flukes out is a LOT better than the fall back we have at QB. People trust Jones and Washington, not so much Pennington and Clemens. The other factor in the Ryan hate is that Clemens really hasn't been given a fair opportunity by anyone, the Jets or the fans. Going on facts, he won 3 games last year, as opposed to 1 by Pennington, and he did it with Coles and Cotchery both hurt frequently. The guy has never had an opportunity to play with a good offense around him, and even playing on such a bad offense, he put up an absolutely fantastic game against Pittsburgh, who are not slouches. The potential is definitely there and should be given an opportunity to come out. I won't be upset if we draft Ryan generally because I trust this FO and their draft decision making. I personally loved our past two drafts and have faith that they will get the right guy. With that said though, I'd rather the Jets get McFadden or Long (or trade down) and then use the 2nd round pick on Flacco. But there is a reason I'm hanging out on a Jets message board, and Tannenbaum is in a front office chair, and I will back whatever decision they make.
Dware, I agree. What gets me is spending $20 million guaranteed on ANY rookie. More than anything else, this is why I would be much more comfortable if the NYJ were able to trade down and get more picks for their investment.
I would not be upset. I would rather take Ryan than McFadden. But I would like to go defense with our first pick.
From what I've seen he appears to have the "moxie" and intangibles to be an NFL QB. I just don't think the NYJ need to take a QB at #6
No. 1 need on the team without a doubt. If they love him and want to build their SB team around him it's without a doubt the best thing to do. We don't have another position of even close to the need we have at QB and it's the most important position on the field. You don't build a SB team around a LG you get a LG to protect the QB who is the leader of your team.
