I like the gholston pick even though i think Mcfadden is a more exicting player to watch. RBs are a dime a dozen every year another"Next Barry comes out". We can always wait and get the next guy on offense. Plus we should take gholoston and then if we suck draft Tim Tebow next year
...yeah let's draft a run-first QB that runs a spread attack offense. He's not going to be able to run over guys in the NFL.
That first statement is just flat ignorant. Even if they aren't counted as defensive plays, you're saying that he was named an all american thanks to 3 blocked kicks. Incredible. I would also go as far to say that when it comes to Corners playing the run, Cromartie can do much more than "jump on the pile". I would also say that the difference between DRC's tackling ability and any of the other corners in the top 5 isn't near worth the amount of mental effort you're putting into this discussion.
Don't call me ignorant. You called the plays that he made of special teams, defensive...and they aren't. SPECIAL TEAMS. He had a good junior season, I'll give him that...that's why he was named to the Pre-Season All-American team. Teams aren't afraid of this kid. You have to be a scary, dominant player to be drafted in the top 10. If you're upset about the Ted Ginn comment, who cares. That's my opinion. He is mix between Chris Gamble and Ted Ginn Jr. He shouldn't be a top 10 pick. You tried to say that Bobbie Williams and Corey Lynch can't be compared to him...but on this All-American team that you love so much, they don't have a spot for CORNERBACKS. It's defensive backs. Which DRC, Williams, and Lynch ALL are. The NFL isn't two-hand touch. EVERY player on defense needs to be able to tackle. Darrelle Revis is an excellent corner in run support. Antoine Winfield is probably the best in the NFL. You have to be able to tackle BIG players. I can't see DRC doing that, because he shys away from contact when a running back, fullback, or tight end is involved. Any player can lay a hit on an exposed receiver reaching for a high ball. That's routine. I hope that the Patriots draft him.
Dude, come on, you're still not getting it. I still just flat don't get how you can keep saying this stuff like "teams don't fear him" and how you continue to say he didn't deserve to be on the all american team. Maybe I'm missing something here. Maybe this is all an elaborate candid camera stunt. The thing with Williams and Lynch doesn't matter in the slightest. If anything, it proves me even further right than I already am, that Cromartie was so good he makes the squad over guys who had bigger stats. As for the hitting, again, we've seen one game from him, and he stepped up in every spot. Even if he isn't at that level in the NFL, he's bound to be closer to that than the helpless damsel in distress you make him out to be.
Actually you're the one not getting it. Stop trying to prove something. Teams don't fear him...they aren't afraid to throw at him. That says something. You said it best: We've seen ONE game. DRC had a good game. Have you ever heard of Larry Brown? He had a good game once. Williams and Lynch did make the All-American team, so you're wrong about that. You, nor I can win this argument, because he hasn't played a down in the NFL. It's all opinions. You can't change my mind. I think he's overrated and not worthy of a Top 10 selection, and I'm sticking to my guns.
All I'm trying to prove is how ridiculous some of the statements you're making are. Namely the idea that he wasn't good at TSU, teams don't fear him, and all that other BS. I'm tired of going around in a circle on this, but you have yet to make ANY sense regarding why you believe that. It's like someone told you a fact, and now you're forced to support it, even though you have no idea why. Just give me a link or SOMETHING to support why you say such things. ANYTHING. Hell, I'm hoping you actually have something, so we can end this. And I'm well aware that Lynch and Williams were on the team, I'm the one that had to tell you they were safeties, remember? I was saying that while some guys are on there with huge stats, DRC made it over other stat guys because of his play.
I knew they were safeties. I just used them as examples because they were on the team with him...and they were much more deserving. Teams constantly threw the ball to his side of the field...and had success. If he was feared, teams wouldn't throw at him. Is that what you wanted? It pretty much speaks for itself when I say he's not a scary player in coverage, or in run support.
I just figured I would point out that the best CB in the history of the NFL couldn't tackle for sh!t.
As a football fan I have to say some fans expectations of what a top 10 pick should be is retarded...
Darren McFadden...a player you have to be worried about on every play. Chris Long...a player you have gameplan around. You see what I'm saying?
All you basically said me is that you hope to get a really good player with the 6th pick...and when it gets down to it having a top 10 picks just means you have a better chance to get a very good player in a pool of very good non-pro football players. Theres no guarantee any of these guys are locks to be game planned around...
There is no guarantee, but these players had to be game-planned around in college...and that means a lot. Usually when picking in the top 10, you hope to get a very good player. I don't know about you, but I want a player that was the best at the highest level of college football.
So did Dre Moore, Cliff Avril, Shawn Crable, and tons of other guys in this draft... And Chris Long hardly dominated the highest level of college football...not that I don't think he'll kickass in the NFL but have you seen some of the teams the guy played last year/most years?
I worded wrongly when I said used "game-planned"...what I really meant was something like this: If McFadden takes the field, the opposing team's coaches worry about him scoring on every play. They are so focused in on him, that a simple misdirection toss to Felix Jones goes the distance. McFadden's presense on the field is so intimidating that others become better. Chris Long drew constant double teams, and he was still effective, but more importantly, other players were given the opportunity to move about untouched because of the double team to Long. I'm really high on Dre Moore and Cliff Avril. Honestly, I'd take either of them over Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Chris Long plays in the ACC. It's a decent BCS conference. Long had 79 tackles, 19 TFLs, and 14 sacks...as a 3-4 defensive end. That's pretty fucking dominant. Have you seen the teams that DRC has played against last year/most years?
The ACC is meh...and Wyoming...Duke...Middle Tenn....GT...NC...a crappy Miami O... Still he was pretty good against VT...wasn't blown away with him against Maryland... It's not even like he was a true 3-4 DE... Not even going into that...but his physical talent and size at the CB position is elite...he was very productive in college...and personally I liked the interview he did with Scott Wright...those are the big 3 keys for me...not saying I want him at 6 but I wouldn't be mad if we picked him...he knows the CB position too and Personally, I like Antwaun Moldin and Patrick Lee enough to not want either of the first round CBs...but this really reminds me of my mancrush on Eric Wright last year even though I liked and respected Revis' talent. I think either way we get a good player, but like I said...if our FO drafted him I would know they did alot of homework on the guy and think he can be a good NFL corner in our system.
I'm not really big on the ACC either, but Miami's running game was solid. Kyle Wright just had no protection. You have to look at it from both sides...UVA wasn't a very good football team either. Wyoming, Mid Tennessee State and Duke are pretty damn bad, but Duke is in the conference...and everyone schedules cake non-conference opponents like Wyoming and Mid Tenn State. Butch Davis actually has North Carolina on the rise, but their offense is still very young and not very good. Georgia Tech was better than UVA. Chris Long was a true 3-4 end at UVA, but Groh was smart enough to use him all over the place. He's not going to be able to push NFL sized linemen around like he did with college linemen. His versatility is what's so interesting about him. He could fit into the Jets defense in so many ways, it's just a shame he'll be gone before our pick.
You realize no protection = no O-line = Good game for D-line. And UVA has some pretty good D-line talent. Jeffery Fitzgerald is another future high draft pick, Sintim is another very good pass rusher... No they weren't. And while I realize NC is on the rise, they still suck right now. It would have been nice to see Long dominate say...Boston College or Clemson. A college 3-4 is not a pro 3-4 and therefore he was not a true 3-4 DE. Yea I know all this...I thought we were debating level of competition and what makes a top 10 pick...not Chris Long's merits as a prospect which we both agree as very good.
Miami had a solid, but not great running game with James and Cooper...because their young offensive line can run block, but they have no earthly idea how to pass block. So, good run blocking offensive line equals a challege for a 3-4 defensive end to make plays in the backfield...which he did. I think GT was the better team. Their schedules make the difference. I know UVA beat GT, but Choice was injured early in that game. He would've made a difference for the Yellow Jackets. GT beat a great Clemson team. Also, GT scheduled Georgia would many considered as the #1 team in the country after the bowls. Their only "gimme" game was against Samford. UVA lost to Wyoming, and almost lost to UCONN, Mid Tenn State, and North Carolina. I said they were on the rise...but their offense was horrible. Thanks for repeating what I said. Keyword: WAS I didn't compare college to the pros. I said Chris Long WAS a true 3-4 defensive end for the Cavaliers. WAS. His versatility gives him the ability to make many different transitions in the NFL. Level of Competition: ACC is far better than Championship Subdivision's Ohio Valley Conference that Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie plays in...shit, the Sun Belt conference is much better than the Ohio Valley Conference. What makes a top 10 pick (in my opinion): A dominant, special, TOP LEVEL player that can make a smooth, quick transition into the NFL.
