You can play that with Chad too, McCariens dropped a TD in the NE game. I was pointing out the stats that Fourthandlong wanted. If Chad is still on the roster come training camp, Clemens is a career backup.
The point is they knew what they had in Rivers from practice not the 2 games he played and committed to him. The Jets have 2 full years and 8 starts on Clemens and are going to have an open QB comp. Should tell you something about Clemens or FO.
Matt Ryan has to be the most over hyped, underachieving quarterback I've seen on the vault this high on any draft board. Because he looks like a quarterback, has good mechanics, and I believe, primarily, because he's a New England area quarterback with an Irish name, he's somehow a hot commodity. The truth is this guy didn't exactly set the ACC on fire. His completion percentage and TD-INT ratio, big time indicators of pro success, really left something to be desired. I think his true value lies somewhere near the end of round one. I think any team that invests a top five in him is out of their gourd. As I've been reviewing the top ten of this draft, I've come to the realization that Gholston and McFadden are the only guys really worthy of a pick. Since the bust factor on these types of picks is so high, and because the teams that are picking in those slots are there primarily because of a lack of star talent, it makes it of absolute importance to take the guy with the highest ceiling, IMO, regardless of need. Both of these guys have off the charts athleticism, matched with solid production, and you really can't ignore that. -X-
What Clemens really showed last year was a live arm and very nice release. He also showed terrible foot work, indecision, a lack of short to mid range accuracy (probably because of his foot work), and a small stature. He also did take a few big hits without putting the ball on the turf. Does that mean he can't improve and turn into a big time QB, not at all. It also doesn't mean he can or that based on his in week performance and grasp of what the team was trying to do that he instilled confidence in the CS that he will be. We really don't know because both Mangini and Tannenbaum are smoke screen guys and usually don't tip their hands. If they are honest about a competition and bring back Chad at 7 Million they are almost telling us that Chad will start and Clemens has to wow them because he hasn't instilled cofidence in them that he is the guy. Chances are at least 50/50 that what they have said is a smoke screen because they don't want to tip anything prior to the draft. Once the draft is over we might get a clearer indication.
I think that did kill him and will continue to kill him. Look at all the elite QBs right now and they all have size.
Another one... Bronco is on a tear! The FO is not convinced that Kellen is the guy. He was the defacto starter at the end of last season. Why would they have an open competition if Kellen was the future? Why? Because he is not. He did not progress in his starts and most of the time looked terrified. He threw some good passes in a 2-minute situation with opposing teams in a prevent. So what. The Jets know that Chad's arm is cooked and Kellen is lost. they wil draft a QB on the first day.
How many games over 500 is Chad after six seasons. Answer that question. Then you will have to ponder why he is defended like Peyton Manning on this board.
In the only meaningful stat available, Chad Pennington is 0-8 in bringing home the Lombardi trophy to the New York Jets. :breakdance:
I agree with everything that you said here. If Chad is back there is no way they are benching a 7 mil a year Qb. Chad is as good as the starter for the first three games. NE in week 2 and Sd in week 3 should change that decision much quicker than last year.
How would Rivers done if he had to sit behind our o-line without Lt to hand the ball off to and Lorenzo Neal to lead block. What if he had Wallace Wright and Brad Smith as his receivers. He was put into a position to succeed. Kellen came into a no win scenario designed for Dink and Dunk.
Does it matter? All that matters is whether or not the FO has decided he is or is not the future QB of this team. That will be answerd in about a week and a half. If they draft a QB in the second round you can say goodbye to him. If they don't he has another year to prove himself assuming he even wins the job.
It will be answered at the earliest in a week and a half or the latest around Midnight on 9/22/08 after the Charger game on Sunday night Football.
You do realize KC was passing against the second and third string defenses in the preseason rite where as Chad faced starting defenses. We can not trade or let Chad go. That would be suicidle. He will cost us a fortune if we did so. His cap hit will be so huge, we will have to cut about 2-3 starters to get under the limit in 09 so he will stay atleast 2 yrs I would say as long as he gets a good chance at starting. If he's not starting, he 'might' restructure his contract, and ask for to be traded. And Im pretty sure he WILL restructure if he needs to.
Not exactly. He could replace Pennington after that game but he would be back to square one in proving himself all over if he doesn't win the job in pre-season. It may just set back his release by a year. Personally, I think the Jets have to draft a QB this year. It's just a matter of what round they do it in. They have no faith in Clemens and Pennington is one injury away from retirement.
I agree with what you said in principle, but I don't think a second round QB sinks his ship, but if they select Ryan in the first, there will be a bus ticket waiting for him the following Monday. If they do select a QB in the second, I think it will make for an interesting 09.
If they have no faith in Clemens then they better draft a Qb in the second round. Chad is done. Period.
I was trying to think who they might be able to trade for and I come up with an empty list. I doubt they could get Quinn for their 2nd even though Cleveland just signed Anderson to a new deal. Not many backups out there that they would want to begin with so I see the draft as the only possibility.
You came up with an empty list because it is an empty list. No one out there. Making matters worst, next years draft has very few good QB's either. If they could get Quinn for a second, I would be one very happy camper. I would even kick in a 4th, Won't happen though. I don't think Anderson will be able to duplicate what he did last season and really was surprised they signed him.
