9 million a year for the first 3 years and 16 million guaranteed?!! Nobody even knows if this guy will be able to play at the same level...and what happens when the raiders suck for a while, suddenly the money may not be enough to keep this guy quiet. Haha, well at least there's always the raiders to pick up the "suck" slack that we can no longer claim.:drunk::raiders:
Now I have a thread to bookmark in case raiderjeaux talks shit about the Jets' spending spree this offseason. Holy crap what a waste of money.
Great player and great talent, but his career has been devistated by injuries. There's no way a guy with as many injury problems that he has should warrant that type of money. Between this and the lucrative contract they gave to another solid player coming off of IR in Tommy Kelly, you really have to wonder with this team... 7yrs and 50 million is a hell of a contract.
There's a perception in league circles that the Raiders are overpaying free agents in order to lure players who might not otherwise be inclined to play football for a team with a well-greased revolving door at the head coaching position. And so the Raiders are putting the word out that the deals signed by some of the team's new free agents aren't as strong as advertised. As Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times points out, it's virtually unprecedented for an NFL team to correct the record regarding the published details for player contract -- but not for the reason McDonald articulates. Though we agree with McDonald's assessment that the perception of big spending could help the Raiders lure other players, teams typically are reluctant to throw water on the numbers that make it to the press because they're happy to let the player think he got a better deal than he really has. If the team publicly undermines the player's contract, the player might acquire a chronic case of stick-in-butt disease early in the relationship. As to receiver Javon Walker, the Raiders contend that his reported $16 million guarantee is made up of a $6 million signing bonus, a $5 million base salary in 2008, and a $5 million base salary in 2008. Some agents would argue that this money is as a practical matter guaranteed because the Raiders aren't likely to cut Walker after only one season. But we disagree with that. Avoiding $5 million in base salary and carrying $5 million in dead money next year is, in our view, a wash. If Walker doesn't work out this year, we think the Raiders wouldn't hesitate to cut him. So the actual guarantee for Walker is $6 million and the practical guarantee is $11 million. Also, the Raiders contend that the deal given to tackle Kwame Harris, reported as three years and $16 million, is actually a one-year, $3 million deal. J Walker if healthy is a number 1 WR. Yea not only did you overpay but you signed players on the downside o0f their career(outside of possible Pace) IS it the steve atwater and ronnie Lott scenario again for Jets. Let see ALan Faneca 32- who pittsburgh has great track record letting go of there players atthe right time(see Joey porter) Richardson- 37 year old fullbacks. Five years agothat would have been a great signing ,but when a fullback gets that old they lose their effectiveness(too many hits take their toll) Kris Jenkins again a couple years ago this guy possible was the best Dt in the game. Well time hasn'tbeen to kind to Jenkins. Pace is a younger player who has some upside but hes basically been a one year wonder. Jets better win soon as these players aren't going to be around too long.
Holy shit, did a Raiders fan just criticize the JETS for signing players on the downside of their careers???? I AM SWIMMING IN IRONY, JEAUX!!!!!!!! SWIMMING!!!! You are PRICELESS!!!!
Did you (or anyone else) happen to see Warren Sapp on PTI today? His comments about how bizarre the Raiders organization is (the players never had any idea who was actually responsible for anything, with random strangers showing up and "taking charge") were pretty funny. Until there is evidence that things have changed dramatically, the notion that anyone could possibly hold up the Raiders organization as anything but a joke (and criticize any other organization) is ludicrous.
Raiders signed older players Like a Jeremy Newberry, C Carlise and Cornel Green last year for the oline because they were stop gaps(knew Blocking scheme+ assimilate the younger guys alot faster) . Until the young guys behind them could supplant them. You look at the raiders roster (young players) and The Jets roster (age is starting to creep into it ) Lets look Raiders signed their key young Players(hello tannbaum you take care of your own first) 2. Gibril Wilson 26 - fills a big need at safety 25 Kwame harris- the former first round bust fits their new blocking scheme very well. 29 Javon Walker( Only older vet signed) This one a gamble but there wasn't many other chances to get a number 1 reciever. )IF Healthy J Walker is a number 1) I guess for mangini saving his job, is more important, than building for the long haul. Jets aren't winning any championships with these signings.
I love that it's the Jets who are overpaying for guys on the downside of their career. Meanwhile, Javon Walker is a 30 year old with a bum knee. I'm sure he still hasn't hit his prime. Walker's a #1 WR when healthy. The way Faneca's a great LG when healthy, Jenkins a great DT, Richardson a great FB.
Who does Tannenbaum have to take care of? Kerry Rhodes will get paid when the time comes. The rest of the team don't have anything to bitch about. Coles' contract was redone already. The team was 4-12. Win some damn games and then bitch about your contract. I don't like whiny bitches with 4 wins.
Hey Jets make those signings(faneca, Richardson and Kris jenkins five years ago you would have some team. Unfortunately those players have seen better days. Again I did say raiders are gambling with Walker, but they didn't overpay. Again check out the article I posted earlier in this thread. Raiders mostly signed younger players in FA and their own . (with the exception of Walker) D Woody has an impressive resume at RT(five games) and most of there FA addition are AARP card holders.
The one "old" guy they signed is a Pro Bowl FB to a 1 year deal. Even you in your infinite wisdom know 31 for a lineman isn't old at all. All these deals were either front loaded or loaded with incentives. By the way jeaux, will the Raiders finally be a good team this year? It's been all sunshine and lemon drops with you for years, and so far awful results. Will the Raiders finally stop being an embarrassment?
The Jets, even after their recent signings, are the 4th youngest team in the NFL as of today (yes, younger than the Raiders). Going into 2008 they will have a 3rd year LT and 3rd year center on the line, they NEED a veteran presence between them, and Faneca was easily the best available. Lack of experience on the line was one of the biggest reasons why our offense sucked last year. Javon "Walker" is 29 with the knees of a 50 year old. But yeah, Kwame Harris... not bad. I'm sure he will fit that new blocking scheme excellently http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=12457884 That must be the old "Ol?!" blocking scheme.
I could swear that last year you said that the Raiders' offensive line was going to be amazing because of these now "stop gaps", Jeaux. In all seriousness, however, I am envious of you guys having a healthy Michael Bush next year. The Raiders should have quite the stable of running backs.
NO I said Raiders Oline was going to improve tremendously from the year before.(It was the worst in 2006) IT did. Under the guidance of TOm cable they became the sixth best team rushing the football. When you can run the football it makes the QB job must easier. (very good when your breaking in a young QB) I Love the Kwame harris signing.(25 years old) The guy was horrible with 49ers but I remember anotherr Olineman who might have been a bigger bust (lincioln Kennedy) - who came over and looked alot diffrent in Raiders system. (became a probowl RT with the Raiders) I feel so confident in harris, because Im a big believer in Tom Cable(Raiders oline coach) Cable made alot of money for Clevland Browns RT Kevin Shaffer . Kevin Shafer played LT for Cable with the falcons. He looked so good in cable system, that Browns signed him to play LT.( hugh contract) He didn't do so well and now their rt. You look at the young depth theyn are building on the Oline. LT 25 K Harris 6'7 325(has athlethic feet for LT) 23 LT Mario Henderson 6'7 305 (former power forward has the monster reach and quick feet- probably about two years away) 27 LG Robert gallery- Only gave up one sack last year C Raiders have alot of young Players but they have a hugh stop gap- Jeremy Newberry (don't have anyone as good as him yet Rg cooper carlise Is the starter by ZI see 24 Jonathan Palmer 6'5 335(stolen off Steelers practice squad) as eventually RG 24 Rt Paul MCquistan 6'6 315 ( did excellent job down the stretch and is excellent run blocker. Raiders running game sucess not due to just the RBs but theoline, Two stud FBs, TES- Zach miller - alround excellent TE (very good run blocker) Return to health this year of blocking TE Fred Wakefield 6'7 290 -he like having another olineman and WRs that are also excellent blockers. R curry and J Porter( hopefully javon Walker is just as good in that area. BY season start, Raiders starters on both sides of ball will be younger than any team in football.
