Even if the moves were desperate, how could it reflect on Mangini? He coaches the players MT gives him, he may even request particular types of player or individuals, but he doesn't negotiate salaries, trades or signing bonuses.
Again, what's the point? We paid (or over paid) to fill various holes in the team. We are not in cap hell and still have two rather high draft choices. The cash spent is irrelevant to everyone but Woody Johnson. Whether it was desperation or not, the team improved at each position added. They're not a Super Bowl team, but these moves aren't the cause of that. I just do not see the downside.
If the pats made these exact same moves they'd be praised for them. If we made the moves the Pats made last year we would have been killed for it. That's the way it goes. I have read over and over how the giants didn't spent alot on FA last year well how soon they forget that a bunch of key guys(including Plaxico and Pierce, w/o them the ginats wouldn't have played in the SB) were high priced FAs from a couple of seasons earlier. This is still a process, we are not a SB team b/c of these moves but w/ the right drafts and the right moves over the next couple of years maybe we could be?
We probably overpaid for Pace, Woody & Faneca, and who knows how Jenkins is going to play in the 3-4. I love all the moves and I'm excited to see how it pans out, but I can't blame anybody who questions the calls the front office has made. None of this really matters anyway until the games start.
I think if we overpaid for anyone, it was without a doubt Pace. Hopefully last year will turn out to be the first of many solid years as a 3-4 OLB and not just a contract year fluke (BT??). I think what these writers fail to address though is that we really had very little talent on this team honestly.
you can't be a SB team just through the draft unless you have a camera helping you on gameday. You need some free agents. The Giants got Plax in free agency as well as Mckenzie.
Kris Jenkins wasn't hired to be the sack leader. His job is clog up the middle to help stop the run up the gut, and to open lanes for linebackers to run through on blitzes, etc. Woody as a bit heavy might be a good thing. No matter what we do somebody has something negative to say about it. If we get McFadden on draft day and follow with a WR or Godsner Cherilius somebody will have something negative to say about it. Whenever we finally win a Super Bowl less negative things will be written about us.
While you may be able to get "steals" in the draft, very rarely are free agent signings cheap. That is the way you get free agents to sign. It is either spend the money on FA or do what we did last year (nothing). If you miss out on Top level free agents, you wind up overpaying for second level as well. If we had a good season last year and made these moves, we would have been picked to win the Super Bowl.
the only thing we should worry about are WINS. fu#k what everyone else is saying. our FO is bringing in guys to fit thier system. let them talk. the only thing that matters is how everything translates to the field.
Like I’ve said before – you are bound to overpay when you are stuck in a division where 3 of 4 teams are running the same system and there is limited talent for that system. It forces you into a bidding war with division rivals over every acquisition. If Belly made the same moves – they would be writing about what a genius he is.
The Jets moves reek of desperation because the team and this management is desperate. It's about time.
cant blame em I wouldnt have paid that much for pace either nor would I have spent money on Woddy (is he really makin 5 mill a season)
yeah, we overpaid, but if this regime didn't turn it around in the next two seasons the regime would have been gone, and without the signings with the holes we had we probably wouldn't have turned it around. now, these guys give us better players to build around with this years and next years draft. as long as we sign our coming rookie contracts, we have a chance to be good with these signings for the next 3 or 4 years, during which time more money will come off the salary cap and we will be in okay position when we need more players. I'd overpay if it leads to a 3-4 year window of success and doesn't 49er us in salary cap hell for a decade.

I don't blame any reporter that says these moves seem desperate. Yes they fill needs, yes we've brought in some good players, but it just happens to be coming off a 4-12 season and a contract year for Mangini. Really, he's got nothing to lose by spending the entire Jets bankroll. If he fails he's likely gone and the Jets cap woes won't be his problem. If he succeeds then he's a genius for his amazing offseason moves.
