I don't know why, but the Faneca situation is making me nervous. There is something going on here that I don't trust. Every other free agent that signed, signed a contract yesterday. Faneca did not and he and his agent are denying a deal and dragging this out. Why? I suspect that something else is in the works behind the scene. I don't like the comments from Faneca's agent - that "it sucks" that Arizona doesn't have the money and that the Jet signing "is a lie." Does that sound like the comments of an agent that wants to sign this deal and play for the Jets?

I think Faneca may be using the Jets to set a market price and is hoping that either 1) the Cardinals get the Fitzgerald situation worked out this weekend and create the cap space to sign Faneca (it is clear from reading the articles that Arizona is his first choice) or 2) the 49ers or some other team jump in with more money. Why else is there a delay? I have Reggie White/Antoine Winfield visions in my head.

If I were Tannenbaum, I would bring Jacob Bell in here today and start working very publicly on a deal just to send a signal to Faneca that this $32 milllion deal may not be here for him whenever he gets around to coming to NY to sign it. Plus it gives the Jets another option if Faneca is using the Jets as his safety. Why should the Jets be a pawn?

I feel the same way....I'm very nervous about this also, I thought we'll have him signed today....This can only happen to the Jets. You're right we should bring in some backup plans just in case.

I am kind of getting the same feeling that I did with the Runyon deal.

Exactly... I agree with everything you said.

Bring in bell... Get a deal done ON PAPER, and AS SOON AS Faneca signs with someone else.... Sign BELL 2 mins later.

If Bell is here I won't be sad, but i'd rather have the All-Pro

We are probably feeling the same way Fins fans are about Pace ... who is scheduled to talk to the Jets today.

I think you are looking into it a little too much, at least at this point. It sounds exactly as has been reported, that they have agreed to a contract and he will be coming to NY today to finalize it. Until any of that changes there is no reason to worry.

Then why does it "suck" that the Cardinals don't have cap room and why so vehemently deny a deal with the Jets? Why didn't Faneca's agent just say it's not done yet and we are coming to New York to work out the details. Why call it a lie? It's not the way a person deals with a prospective employer that is putting huge money on the table.

I'm getting the feeling that if we don't get him signed by midnight tonight, it's not going to happen. Time to tell his agent either SH.. or get off the pot.

Maybe being a Jets fan has made me cynical, but I remember the Antione Winfield affair and, perhaps more embarrassing, the Reggie White circus - he got the Jets to sign Boomer Esiason because he said they would be more attractive with a veteran QB like... Boomer Esiason. He then signed with the Packers and left the Jets looking like dupes.

I am holding my breath waiting for Faneca to sign, but ever since I heard that he was going to take his time I started to worry about the Cards.

I'm sure Faneca did want the Cards to be in it for him, he apparently had a great relationship with Grimm and had some interest. If he isn't a Jet by the end of the weekend I would be worried. This has been rumored from the beginning of FA that he would make one visit to the team he signs with. All indications are he is coming to NY today.

I'm starting to get the same feeling. I was elated at his reported signing yesterday and hope that a deal still gets done, but the signs are not as good as one could hope.

Because obviously he wanted to be reunited with Grimm and Wisen.... that's why it sucks. It doesn't mean he isn't coming here. It just means we weren't his 1st choice.

As far as the agent, well he is coming to NY today right? He isn't going to SF or STL. The Rams from all indications have started pursuing other options. It' simple the deal is in place but they need to finalize details. Faneca was obviously trying to buy time for the Cards but they have come out and said they can't fix things to sign him. (BTW I don't hear anything of him giving the Cards a discount either).

True, seems like bad form to me. It's like Faneca will begrudgingly sign a multimillion dollar deal with the Jets because AZ doesn't have the cash. I really hope the Jets set a time limit on this offer to force Faneca's hand. It was reported that he would commit to a team by Saturday night, but setting a Sunday night deadline before the Jets pull the money off the table wouldn't be a the worst thing in the world to do.

maybe he is getting pete kendalls advice........

remeber guys - these players do not live in a vacuum. they talk, listen, and hear about other players, teams, and coaches. lets face it the jets have never been that attractive a franchise - too much turnover at all levels, geography, taxes, etc etc.

the issue of playing home games in jersey and practicing on LI has been an issue with several players in the past and continues to be - of course that changes after next year.

for a veteran like faneca - he is likely checking out all these things before he signs on the line.

maybe the cards will trade fitzgerald to the jets which opens the door for a counter offer to faneca.

I doubt it....Faneca is getting big money, *guaranteed* money. Kendall just wanted a raise. Also Arizona hasn't been a attractive franchise either....not by a long shot. I have a feeling Faneca really wants to go to AZ, and is holding out on signing our contract just too see if AZ will do the restructure with Fitzgerald.
