The Jets have done a solid job so far on Day 1. As I stated yesterday I really felt like Jenkins and Faneca were the main players targeted. NT - Kris Jenkins - The Jets filled their biggest weakness on defense the past few years with this signing. They were not gonna get a better player in FA or the draft. They walked away with the best NT available, for merely a 3rd round and 5th round pick. This is a great great trade by Tannenbaum and Co. NT - Sione Pouha - This is quietly a very smart extension. Pouha has always played hard and has gotten better every year and will be a great sub in for Jenkins. With the ability to learn behind Jenkins is also a great thing to have. I still feel late in the draft NT will be address but so far they handled the NT position perfectly. NT - Dwayne Robertson - As I stated once again yesterday I truly felt that Jenkins would become a Jet, Rogers would become a Dolphin and Robertson would become a Bronco. I still stand true to that. Robertson for a 2nd is the ideal trade here. No Robertson is not staying with the Jets. He costs too much money and with Jenkins and Pouha his walked papers have been signed. Now just think of this, Robertson to Denver for a 2nd. That means the Jets just unloaded a huge contract for a player that isnt fit for the NT. While at the same time upgrading a 3rd round pick to a 2nd round pick. And basically getting Jenkins for a 5th. That looks like an absolute heist if you ask me and I will appluad this CS for days if this is pulled off. OG - Alan Faneca - I felt this signing was a lock and I still feel the same way now. I will admit I am having fears of problems but I really am not that worried. The 49ers and Rams are the only players as well as the Jets for Faneca. Arizona no longer can pay him due to Fitzgerald's contract. The Jets have to be the front runners due too the stability of the team and coaching staff. The Rams and 49ers are still question marks. The biggest thing was making a very good and reasonable first offer. The Jets have done that, my biggest worry is watching the 49ers or Rams throw a lot more money at Faneca. But once again I feel they wont be able to offer him enough more to pull him away from a better situation. OT - Damien Woody - Quietly the Jets have shown interst in Woody. They will push heavy to have him as their RT next season. Once Faneca puts on a jersey the Jets will begin to persue Woody hard! (^_^) ILB - Jonathan Vilma - I see a lot of different opinions on this trade. In reality there were only two teams that were interested in Vilma and that is Detroit and New Orleans. I am positive that Vilma will reach the incentives if he plays even 10 games next year. Therefore this is the best value we could get for him and that is a 3rd round pick next year. He was on his way out and the Jets and Vilma knew it and handled it with pure class. My appriciation goes out to the effort Vilma has put in for the Jets. Good luck in New Orleans my friend. OLB - Calvin Pace - I was looking forward to adding Pace as an insurance policy and depth. Adding Pace would have allowwed Thomas to move back to his original side. Looks like Pace is going to Miami so now I am very nervous about OLB. Yes I know there are some good players in the draft but I would have felt much more comfortable with Pace and not having a glaring need to draft an OLB early on. All in all I was rooting for Pace and Gholston. Heres to hoping Gholston lasts till 6. CB - Asante Samuel - I am so happy for Tannenbaum and Mangini for letting this kid walk away and get his huge pay day. I did not want to see them make a big splash for Samuel and possibly lose out on Faneca. Best part of all is he is going to the NFC. Just my two cents. Youth?
I disagree about Samuel. If we signed Samuel and drafted Gholston (in addition to getting Jenkins), wed have an elite defense next season. Our secondary would be the best in football- I dont even see a close second. I like the idea of having two shutdown cornerbacks, a tackling machine at middle linebacker in Harris, a top NT in Jenkins and a big time pass rusher in Gholston.
Great post... If we get a 2nd rounder for D.Rob... That would be AMAZING, would that mean we get two 2nd round picks this year? And tell me some more about D.Woodey, I never heard of him
Exactly... But I really dont know if we could afford Samuel, Jenkins and Faneca all in ONE offseason... I would love to sign Samuel because like you said, we would have a better secondary than the Ravens... But if I had to pick Faneca or Samuel... Im going Faneca... Because he improves the WHOLE OFFENSE... From Ferguson to Mangold all the way back to Kellen in the pocket to Thomas Jones through the holes
I also think getting rid of Vilma was the correct play, he was disgruntled and was just no effective in this defense. I think he's one heck of a football player but just not right for the system. After the bye week the Jets had the #4 defense in the NFL.
Samuel and Revis would have been nice. But look how well having Bly and Bailey worked out for Denver last year. You need to rush the passer and protect your QB, CB doesnt help there. Revis is our main guy and we dont need Samuel next to him we can grab a CB in the mid rounds and we still have talent at CB on this team. Getting Faneca would be a bigger asset to the team then Samuel would be plus Faneca is a lot cheaper then Samuel. Youthâ„¢
Only thing- Faneca isnt exactly cheap and hes 31, as compared to Samuel who is 27. I dont know, Id prefer if the Jets signed Samuel and then went for a cheaper option at LG- somebody mentioned a guy like Bell. Then we could spend 2 or 3 mid round picks to shore up the right side of the offensive line and our defense would consist of players like Revis, Rhodes, Samuel, Harris, Gholston, Jenkins- Wed have an elite defense and our offensive line would be at least adequate.
Yea if we get a 2nd for D Rob I am positive it will be this year. I am really pulling for this trade. Damien Woody played Guard last year for Detroit. They wanted to re-sign him as RT but he is testing the FA market. Thats where the Jets come in. He was a first round pick back in 1999 for the Patriots. He would be a great addition to this team as a RT. He is 31 years old. Also he recieved minor surgery on his right shoulder after the season ended but should be ready for minicamp. Youth?
Ok this is why I am glad that you are not in charge of the team. No offense to you but you are entitled your opinion. Faneca may be 31 but he is a hell of a lot cheaper than Samuel would have been, who by the way is looking for around 100M. Faneca is a 4x Pro-Bowler and greatly improves everyone on offense around him. Mangold and Brick become better and it leaves us with only one glaring weakness on the OL. That is the RT position which I feel will be filled with Damien Woody and a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick. I dont know why you feel we need 2 or 3 mid round picks to secure the right side of the line. We need a VET LG and VET RT and Drafted RT. Jacob Bell for this O-Line does not help at all. First off they run a different blocking scheme then the Jets do. Also he is young and doesnt improve the line as a whole as much as Faneca does. The addition of Faneca makes the OL Elite. Where the Jets have Revis, Miller, Barrett, and Poteat on the roster for next year. Dont forget about Miller. The Jets will use 1 mid round pick on a CB which isnt a position of need this FA. Your argument for an elite defense doesnt mean anything because I love how your just assuming that Gholston is a Jet already. There is no guarantee that Gholston will even drop out of the Top 5. As I said before I would love to see Samuel in green. But he is not worth the money he would demend and especially when it would be either Faneca or Samuel. Ill take the Pro Bowler that costs about 60M less. Revis is our #1 and we should be looking for a #2. Youth?
You clearly dont understand the complexities of these sorts of roster decisions if you think its a no-brainer that Faneca is more important than Samuel. Faneca brings his strengths but also brings his question marks- Hes 31, considered past his prime and there are certain Steeler fans that will tell you that he didnt play like a Pro-Bowler last season. Samuel on the other hand is 27, would be bringing over invaluable inside information on the Pats, would team up with REvis to give the Jets the number one cornerback tandem in the NFL and would position the Jets to put the cherry on top by drafting Gholston at 6.
The entire O-Line downplayed last year for PITT though to just signle out Faneca plus they just gained a new head coach and a different scheme. Faneca never worked good with Tomlin and they bumped heads a lot. But the Faneca that played under Cowher was amazing. Your agrument is going no where because 31 for a G is pretty much equal to 27 for a CB. Also its funny how you act like Samuel is worth being paid that kind of money. There is only one cornerback worth that and its Champ Bailey. Samuel was a product of the system and is slightly overrated. He will recieve a big pay day because he is the only standout CB in FA this year. He already has his rings and just wants to get paid. He also has terrible character. Personally I do not want a CB who yells out "Thats another cool 1M" after every interception. He wants to get paid and thats all let someone else fork over the money. We have Revis he is our #1. Also how does getting Samuel position us better for getting Gholston?? That has no relivance what so ever. Gholston may not even drop out of the top 5. Adding Samuel or Faneca doesnt make a difference concerning Gholston. But it doesnt matter anymore because the CS knows what needs to be done. Staying far away from Samuel is the right move no matter what way you look at it. You CANNOT invest that much money into the DB's and become a consistent run stopping defense. Youth?
Reasonable Jets fans can disagree about which player would be a better acquisition (if you can only acquire one), Faneca or Samuel. By claiming that Faneca is the obvious and only answer, your not being completely reasonable. There are lots of compelling reasons to wish the Jets would sign Samuel, even at the cost of Alan Faneca. Im not trying to argue, Im just saying that its a tough call. And to the idea that Samuel is a product of the system- we wont know if thats true until hes out of New England.
I have to disagree with your assumptions also... 2 or 3 mid round draft picks aren't going to help our OL in any way (edited in ->) this year... It's painfully obvious this year, as evidenced today right off the bat that the focus will be on the lines, and that focus will be mainly in the FA market in Faneca, and Woody, and the trade for Jenkins. I'll be happier with 2 of those 3 (hopefully all 3) more than with Samuel, not saying he wouldn'tbe a great addition, but he wouldn't be one that opened any holes for the RB's, kept the QB upright or help stop the run as much as Jenkins and Faneca and/or Woody would. Don't be surprised to see them re-structure D-Robs Deal and use him at all 3 spots on the D-Line though. I see us praying for Gholston to drop to us at 6, but the draft is a funny thing... he might not be there. Youth - I'm in favor of trading D-Rob, but we would need to bring in another D-Lineman first before pulling the trigger on that. Don't count out Calvin Pace just yet... he's only visiting the Dolphins, and I think he would help as well. Ellis
I agree with most but I disagree when it comes to D-Rob. He wont restructure his contract, there is no reason for him too. Plenty of teams are showing interest in him. Getting a 2nd rounder back for D-Rob would be a great way to save cap space and gain some picks back. According to reports the Jets were looking for multiple 1st day picks. That is a good sign meaning he is gaining a lot of interest around the league to put such a high price on him. Worst case scenario we walk away with a 2nd rounder. Getting Jenkins and signing Pouha pretty much sends D-Rob packing. Between Coleman, Jenkins, and Ellis's salaries, D-Rob cant stay. Youth?
I hear you, and don't disagree... The Jenkins signing all but packs someones bags who is already here. But, and here is a bit of my thinking, Anyone considermoving Ellis? Even though he is my sig, he seems disappear for long stretches (I'm talkin games). Move him restructure D-Rob, who from what I saw was pretty active at the DE position when he played there... I could be wrong, but I'd expect alot more from Ellis if he plans on sticking around. I'm sick of hearing how it was the cast around him that cause him to falter so much. When it comes down to it, big time players make big time plays no matter who is there. I, personally, expected more from Ellis than what we have been recieving. Ellis
