3rd round pick is reasonable for Jenkins and was the price I right away thought of for him. And I am hoping we get a 2nd for Vilma........Because the Saints finished .500 I believe so the pick isnt too great.
Quote: "...Vilma has one year remaining on his contract. As of tonight, it appeared as if he wouldn’t receive a long-term deal from the Saints...." This is damned awful for Vilma. He deserves far better. We should keep him until he gets well. Play him next to Harris this year. Part of this is keeping the faith with your best. Part of this is getting the best value for your money. It's not as if he's no good.
The LB market is pretty bad, especially MLB so we can defintely snag a 2nd rounder for a rather young LB who still is in his rookie contract. Jets have the cards in any Vilma talk. Teams will either have to overpay for a LB(Any legit MLB in FA?) or get in the Vilma sweepstakes and win the bid.
Vilma's value isn't close to what it was. Keep in mind, he's coming off a chronic knee injury that caused him to be out for the year. And, he's got one year left on his contract, so any team that gets has to sign him long term, or risk losing him the next year. I'll take a 3rd.
Sorry, Sir, you're talking about the NYJ. Half of the story for the NYJ is what the hell happens to the player. We are setting him free with one leg! I don't like this because I think that a lot of players on that team will be affected by this "strategy." The message here is "don't you get hurt here, man." That breeds "dog" and "excess caution" at the exactly wrong time. Don't like this with Vilma. Football ain't just all about the money -- you have to be smart about the people too.
guys a lb with a bum knee is not worth a second round pick, especially after coming off two years with down production. A 3rd seems reasonable and thats prob the best were going to get. Im very excited at the thought of getting Kris Jenkins, Mangini is a keen Talent evaluator especially on D so if he think that Jenkins can fit the mold of a 3-4 nt, Ill be confident he can. If this scenario played out, i would be happy, trading a guy that doesn't fit our system for a guy that fills our biggest need. And only trading down like 5 spots in the 3rd round. Sorry guys trading down 5 spots in the 3rd round is not that big of a deal.
I would say the main reason Tangini wants to get rid of Vilma is because he doesnt fit the system, not because of his bum knee. Does that play a part? Probably, but the fact that he is out of place in a 3-4 is more of a reason to move him.
If his knee is SO bad, then he wouldent be able to pass his physical........Detroit, New Orleans will MAKE SURE they arent getting damaged goods and will test him fully well.
Vilma has the OCD in his knee, but it wasn't a problem in 2002-2006. He did get injured in 2007, but at 25 he's not an injury case yet by a longshot, a lot of guys have come back from 1 knee injury. He's not in the position Curtis Martin was in at the end of his career. As a pro-bowl MLB... I think a 3rd round pick isn't enough.
Well thats even better for NO or DET....they then have the cards in negotiations due to Vilma play the past 2 years. There isnt an elite MLB in this draft either, and the best one that's available is a guy who's still an uncertainty at MLB in PSU's Dan Connor whos a borderline 1st round pick. So if your in need of an MLB, the best one you will find is Vilma....I think its a bargain for whoever gets Vilma since the best MLBs are around round 2 talent so you arent getting ripped off and get a guy who may be somewhat hurt but also was an ex ROY and has NFL experience already on his belt.
Honestly now you guys are bitching about only getting a third for Vilma? People have been saying thats the best we could get on his knee, so many of us said keep him because he is worth more than that, now it appears he will be dealt for peanuts, and now you are all gonna be pissed. serves you right...
Now you say, "pass the physical." Hell, as I understand it, he's not off crutches very long. He can't run yet. Who is going to prognosticate whether that microfracture surgery is going to work or not? Who is going to predict if the bone will degenerate or regenerate? When can you know that? I would say that it will be a barely educated guess -- even by the most specialist they can pay for. That procedure is catch and catch can...maybe it works, and maybe not. Who knows? I just look at how good a guy Vilma has been for his team mates. We need to treat him right for them, too.
This isn't about trade value for NYJ. My comments are regarding how Vilma's short shrift by the NYJ has an impact on the players on defense for the NYJ.
2 very average seasons, one knee injury and one year left on a contract = a low trade value. A 3rd for Vilma sounds about right at this point.
