Seems like a bit of a Madden trade but I'd take it, and I think the Lions should too. It's a fair trade.
Robertson is not a great fit for DE in the 3-4. He's a tad short (not a huge problem) and has short arms (potentially a huge problem). Coleman is a quality starter IMHO. That's like keeping Vilma because he can play ILB in the 3-4. Sure he can, but he's not an ideal fit. If we're willing to trade Vilma, we should be willing to trade Robertson. Not to mention, Robertson's base salary is huge this season.
I'm not a huge fan of losing either Vilma or Robertson. Both are very talented players, and I've always felt that Mangini should have been able to find more productive ways to use both of them. That said, Vilma for Rogers is a good trade I think. It seems like Vilma leaving has more to do with his own desires than the coaching staff's evaluations, I think he wants to go somewhere where he can be a Ray Lewis clone, put up big numbers and lead a defense singlehandedly. If he wants out, thats his decision. Bringing in Rogers would be perfect, hes got prototype nose tackle size and power, and I think adding a more pure nose tackle should hopefully allow Robertson to be used more in other roles. He doesn't look like your prototype 3-4 DE, but hes a good athlete with good size and natural quickness and pass rush moves, I'd bet hed be pretty productive from the DE spot, plus we'd retain the ability to use some 4-3 looks (say we do draft Gholston, our 4-3 would be Ellis, Robertson, Rogers and Gholston across the front, Thomas, Harris and maybe Pace at linebacker, thats a pretty solid look I'd say). It hasn't been on display because he's playing the nose, but Robertson is the most naturally gifted pass rusher currently on this roster, and given our lack of pass rush ability, I think it makes sense to hold on to him and find ways to let him use that ability.
Rogers is so big and has such a big frame..all he basically has to do is hold his ground against double tams for 30 plays a game and he'll make a HUGE difference. I have to think this is the trade...especially since the whole Denver deal has suddenly faded..
Who wants a third rounder, that would suk. Vilma was first rounder. Not even close between Rogers and a crappy third rounder.
Roy Williams? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA YEAH DETROIT MIGHT DO THAT... C'mon, they wouldn't do that in 1 million years. Then they can trade Robertson for Peyton Manning. C'mon.
what about trading ur 3rd rounder for rodjers if thats what hes worth and trade vilma to another team for a 2nd rounder and about trading robertson,, could u get a third or a 4th for him??
Williams is entering the final year of his contract next season. There has been talk that he wants to leave Detroit. The Lions have to decide what they are going to do with him. Unless the franchise tag is placed on Williams, he will most likely be out of Detroit. So it's not crazy that the Lions might want to get something out of his departure. Calvin Johnson was not drafted to be a #2 and Furrey has emerged as a more than adequate WR. Just playing devil's advocate:wink:
Hopefully we get something decent out of this, Vilma does need to go but not cheaply. And I like the news that D-Rob is on the trading block, we need a real NT.
This just from rotoworld...................btw...from what they are saying, the dolphins are interested in every damn FA... Lions may have someone the Jets want Jonathan Vilma recently said on his blog that he's jogging but is unable to run. Yet the linebacker with the surgically-repaired knee seems to be darting around the league pretty effortlessly in his quest to put the Jets in his rear view mirror. The Detroit Free Press reported that Vilma was in the Detroit area today for a physical, though how extensive a physical can be on a guy who is admittedly a month away from running at full speed is up for debate. This after Vilma was apparently in New Orleans on Monday discussing his possible future with that team. There is no deal in place as of now, and the Jets and (insert team here) wouldn't be able to make a swap until the trading window opens on Friday. But the visit to Motown brings up the idea of Shaun Rodgers, Detroit's mountain of a DT. The Lions have been trying to unload Rodgers, all 6-4, 345 pounds of him, so the possibility exists that Rodgers could wind up with the Jets in one of those rare player-for-player deals. He's certainly more of a prototypical 3-4 nose tackle than Dewayne Robertson, the undersized player who tried valiantly to gobble up double-teams for two years. Imagine Rodgers keeping blockers off David Harris. How would hat change the Jets defensive front? Well, the Jets could either trade Dewayne Robertson -- he's being shopped -- or move him to a defensive end position where he seemed to have more success than while playing over the center in the 3-4 scheme. And Shaun Ellis, a defensive end, played more than a few snaps at outside linebacker last season. With Victor Hobson a free agent and unlikely to return, Ellis may find the move permanent.
as for Detroit's recievers...Rod Marinelli has said he looks forward to seeing CJ and RW being a dominating recievr force for a while...he isn't being traded, I think they already said that
Pretty much. I like Vilma, but it's apparent that there are issues with his knee and the fact that he isn't going to fit in the defense Mangini wants to work with. I don't know why he can't accommodate to the issue, but I guess if he is traded to Detroit, or anywhere for that matter, that we should hopefully receive a player that will work well in our defensive schemes.
a friend told me, that he heard it was DRob and Vilma for Rogers and a 2nd round pick. I hate losing vilma but if we have to lose vilma this trade is very, very good, because with that later 2nd round pick we can get a guy like ahtayba(sp?) rubin to add DL depth and with our higher second round pick get a tackle like Gosder Cherilus or Carl Nicks.
It would have to be for a draft pick. There is no chance Rogers gets sent here, Mangini would never bring him in. Rogers is a fat, lazy player that can be great when he tries, but horrible when he does not. Rogers took himself out of the final drive against the Cowboys last season (arguably their biggest defensive drive of the season). Rogers has no heart what so ever, and anyone that is asking for him really needs to think about that again.
I'm guessing that 360 pound+ dudes are usually a little lazy. We need a fat slob that can can play football, and he can definitely play. I wouldn't be so quick to get rid of DRob, but this guy would be a good choice to try at NT considering the other options (what are they again?).
parcells' comments in the past have shown that he is a fan of rogers....if the mentor/no crap coach likes him then it isnt hard to believe that mangini likes him
It won't happen, ask any Lions fan what they think of Shaun Rogers and they will tell you he is a heartless football player. We don't need guys like that on this team.
