"Word around the league" is that the Jets have already negotiated a deal for free agent Alan Faneca that would guarantee him about $20 million.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat makes it clear that this is a rumor, but the Jets are known to be after Faneca. The Jets are still trying to replace LG Pete Kendall. They probably should've bucked up and paid him last summer.

By spending a ton of money on a veteran guard, I guess this means Mangini and company think we can win right now.

It can't hurt to have Faneca next to D'brick...

i would prefer Bell but not a bad thing at all. Now bring in Flozell Adams to finish up the line. and find a way to bring in a big time skill guy as well. Of course, it wouldnt hurt to bring in a CB like drayton Florence, or a LB such as Calvin Pace... we just have to make some additions to our whole team, and we need to use that cap space. Then at #6 we are hopefully able to move down with somebody pick up an extra pick or two, and get the real value at late round 1-3.

I don't think anyone cares about tampering unless the target player's team was trying to keep the player.

But I definitely can see NE trying to screw us.

Pace seems he is going to be another Bryan Thomas...nobody wants one Thomas, so why would we add another?

If we spend this much money on Faneca, I think we'll actually draft a right tackle instead of signing another stop-gap talent like Flozell the Hotel.

Carl Nicks has a past with our new o-line coach, Bill Callahan. He's a raw talent with all of the tools to become a big time right tackle.

If Calvin Pace doesn't become a Jet, that most likely means Mangini and Tannenbaum are going to draft at least one pass rusher, whether it be Chris Long or Vernon Gholston early, or Cliff Avril, a sleeper out of Purdue.

$20 million sounds whacko for a G, no? But this would be an instant upgrade to everyone around him. This makes Brick and Gold better, makes Thomas Jones better, even makes Clemens better.

A ton of money but we need to do something, so why go half-assed? Clarke is gone, so this rumor could be true.

20 mil is alot for a guard, but for a guy of his skill and experince inbewteen Brick and Mangold its worth it. One more good O-linemen (a RT) and a major weakness becomes a strength heading into this season.

Depends on the length of the contract. If they do a 5 year deal... preferably front-loaded... then chances are Faneca will play out his contract and the $20 mil garunteed isn't bad at all. He is an elite LG and will be worth that price tag.

I was about to say the same thing. $20 million for 1 year is alot. $20 million over a 4-5 year deal, not so much. I would still like them to draft an OG high in the draft. Let him sit behind and learn from Faneca. That way after 3-4 years, his younger replacement can step in. Best way to get the most value for the money spent, IMO.

You sign a guy like Faneca, and all of a sudden our O Line improves monumentally. Draft a RT in the second round, and you have a promising O-Line. Granted there will be struggles.

If we can somehow draft Gholston at 6, that is the makings of a very successful offseason.

It's not a make or break year...unless this team wins 2 or 3 games in '08.

I think everyone that has a say in the Jets' organization knows this team has to be rebuilt.

Mangini and Tannenbaum should get a pass in 2008, as long as the team improves. I believe the Jets will be in position to make a playoff run in 2009, especially if Clemens pans out.

The best thing to happen to this offensive line would be the addition of a veteran LG between two younger players. This would not only greatly help the running and passing game, but also D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Nobody can say that his play wouldn't improve with Faneca next to him.

If we are going to break the bank for anyone, make it Faneca. You build a team from the trenches and outward. This would be a MAJOR addition.
