I was surprised too this morning. Then I realized somone had already posted the link in the "Vilma Jetting Off???" thread. Whatever. It was buried in there and probably warrants its own thread. I LOVE Vilma, and strongly argued last year that trading him was insane and highly unlikely. At this point, given Harris' rapid development--not to mention JV's problems in the 3-4 and injury--I'm more open to the possibility. Of course, the only reasonable response to this is to reserve judgement until the specifics of possible returns in the trade become known. Yeah, I love him, but for the right deal no one is untouchable. I'm not optimistic about getting true value b/c of the injury, and if healthy I expect JV to re-emerge as a top-flight MLB somewhere.
This makes me so mad. I really hope that Mangini knows what he's doing because talent like Vilma does not come by very often. I know I know I can hear it already "You don't fit a square peg into a circle! DER DER DER!" but the fact is that Vilma is too talented to not be able to find a way for him to be productive. Ughhhhh I'm already concerned about this year.
Carlos Mencia sucks. Do everyone a favor and never quote him again. Vilma's talent is in the 4-3, where linebackers are given the chance to move in free space and make plays. He's no help for this team anymore. Let's stockpile picks and let our coaching staff bring in their own guys.
Why would he have equal value to Hall? Hall is a top CB with 5 years experience and is still younger than Aaron Ross (a rookie last year). Vilma is a MLB with 2 bad seasons in a row coming off a knee injury. CBs are way more valuable than LBs, and very good young CBs are going to be worth way more than very good LBers.
You mean Moss, the walking Hamstring Injury? How many games has he missed in Washington? No thanks. I say this is a good move. Vilma, from what he was saying in the press wasn't exactly happy with his situation. They probably wouldn't be extending his contract with him not being a great fit for the 3-4, although he wasn't awful. So the FO might as well get something for him when they can instead of just letting him walk like the past regime did.
My point was he wasn't a pouter. This was a guy who played center for half a season when Mawae went down. He helped tudor Moore, Mangold and D'Brick. He left over a contract dispute not because he felt the weren't maximizing his potential.
I like the fact that we are leaving trades in the hands of players agents. It looks like the rebuilding plan is to throw shit against the wall and see what sticks.
Perhaps this is a pricing-to-the-market move by the NYJ. It is obvious that this is the absolute worst time and set of circumstances for the still crippled and rehabbing Vilma to seek out a trade. He is almost panicked about getting up to speed running before the draft so that his trade compensation value will be acceptable to the Jets. With one year left on his contract, a wise team that liked Vilma would stipulate that he sign a long term deal with the Jets and then they would trade for him. As it is, I think the NYJs will be hard pressed to take 'next-to-nothing' for a crippled rehabbing Vilma coming off underperformances on the field the last two years.
Um...teams do this all the time. Theres always some random Team X gives permission to Player Y to seek trade headline. Not every single kind of, sort of negative detail is a sign of incompetence...
A Vilma trade probably wont happen until june or july. Teams are going to want to make sure his knee is OK. So look for somekind or 09 conditional pick
Um I know teams do this all the time. We suck and can't afford to randomely check the market. We are the 3rd worst team in our division with very little over all talent and the Dolphins are going to put us at the bottom very soon unless we have a real plan, know the market and can implement it. We are not a team in a position to randomely throw shit against the wall. We are a team that needs to be directed from the top.
I think everyone is mis-reading this announcement. Vilma can seek a trade, but no one will give him a long term deal with injury concerns and declining production. He plays next to Harris in '08 and if he produces, we negotiate a mid season extension. It is more of a move to allow Vilma to value himself on the open market than dangle him as trade bait. My bet is the Jets will only move him if they get 1st round value for him, which probably won't happen.
I don't think it is. This could be to gauge fans reaction should he be traded. Personally , I would like to see what he looks like next to Harris and with a big NT installed. If it works , great we have a good tandem for the 5-7 years , if it doesn't , well at least he will (hopefully) be fit and have had a better season ,(trusting that we do indeed aquire a NT and DE) thus more trade value. If we are to let him seek a trade, let him do it next year.
I, for one, am sorry that it couldn't work out for Vilma and the Jets. But at this point, any first day pick for him in a trade would do.
I completely agree must have read m mind.I think this trade would be an excellent move.....We would stay away from Ashante ...who i think is a bit overated and no where near Hall's caliber.
I highly doubt the expected fans reaction will have any impact on what the FO decides to do. This sounds crazy to me.
First of all.. I am confused on why people are suggesting a trade in which we aquire, Hall. The last thing I am worried about is CB/RB. Everything else, I am on board. I dont like this scenario though. We wont get hardly any value from a trade, regardless of the team. It just doesn't seem very worth while to me. JV is a special player, who has shown great skill. He is not a match in the 3-4, and that is sad. We already have a replacement for him, but it sucks to let go of of JV. He is worth so much more then what we will get from him, due to the circumstances of the last two seasons.. Blah
And we're doing that...what you're saying is pure speculation and pretty much a blatant disregard for everything this FO is trying to do. The fact that they implemented their systems immediately, started drafting guys who fit those systems, and used FA as a tool that allows them to work the draft like they want isn't showing a plan? Using FA as a tool to work the draft isn't showing stratgey and knowledge of the market? The thing about this is regime is that we ARE directed from the top. The coach and GM want to build through the draft and target intelligent as well as athletic. We've had two of the best drafts over the past two seasons, we've been one of the most unpredictable teams in the league both in season and in the offseason. These are all signs of a plan, intelligence, strong leadership, and all the stuff you want in a coaching staff over the long haul. Your problem (like many others here) lies in that nothing is happening fast enough. We're a week away from FA and you've already decided this regime is unaggressive and without a plan this offseason.
