Vilma : Jetting Off ? ? ? ~ ~ JETTING OFF? LB Jonathan Vilma admits on his Web site that he's in the dark about his future with the Jets. "As for playing in 2008, I have no idea what is in store for me as far as what the Jets are thinking," he writes. Vilma, who has one year remaining on his contract, could be dangled in trade talks, perhaps as soon as this weekend at the scouting combine in Indianapolis. Three months removed from major knee surgery, he says he has started jogging and hopes to be sprinting in about a month. Vilma, rehabbing in Miami, visited team doctors last week and "things went well." He expects to be 100% by training camp in July. > http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...-02-21_eric_mangini_makes_a_special_hire.html
is there any way vilma can play alongside david harris if it could work i think that would be a great combo any thoughts
I think he can....but if we can get something for him via trade, I think we should since he only has a 1-year deal. We're probably not gonna resign him even if he works out, so might as well cut the ties now.
true but i would love to see those to wrecking havoc this year if we got any d-line help these 2 could run free and make big plays
Read this for my analysis on Vilma's situation. http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=29747
I hope we keep him. I think if we beef up that line considerably and get TWO real OLB's, because lets face it, Bryan Thomas is absolute GARBAGE, then you will see Vilma become the beast that we are used to. Also he really is the heart and soul and quarterback of this defense.
Vilma is as good as gone. One more year on his contract, if the Jets keep him he will walk after 2008. I expect him to be traded, sadly. He will continue to be a BEAST elsewhere.
We don't have to trade him. We can keep him for the remainder of his contract, and later try to resign him if he shows improvement with his condition. Let's take advantage since we've already got him, even if it is for one more year, that is if he doesn't resign with us.
Why do you guys think that the NYJ would ever part ways with one of their favorite hard-working lunch-pail guys? Vilma is so much better than any five year washed up FA LB out there, it's not even funny. It's sad to hear all these disparaging remarks about such an excellent man. Finding a place for what he loves to do is the challenge of the year for these CS guys. Vilma's plight is absolutely the creation of this coaching staff, and if they retain any shred of honor in their hands and feet and brains, they will find a way to make his hard work and native talent pay off for him. This guy Vilma got run into the ground chasing a position that de-emphasized every skill he ever possessed. When you look at the film of Vilma at Miama, and the film of Vilma at the Jets in 07, you can hardly recognize that it's the same man. The coaches have sabotaged Vilma, he arrived here a no. 1 and now barely three years later there's no market for a bum-legged linebacker who gets repeatedly knocked off the ball, overruns the play, and when he gets there misses the tackle too often. Vilma didn't start this way. Vilma damned well won't end up this way. I consider the NYJ CS honorable ...so far.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...2/2008-02-22_jonathan_vilma_can_fly_away.html This regime is quickly becoming a joke. You just don't get rid of young players w/ that much ability. You find a place for them, that is the coaches job. Vilma will be just another in a long line of former Jets to excel once they leave the Jets.
I like Vilma. He is a smart, seemingly hard working and athletic player. That being said, he was outplayed by a rookie 2nd rounder this year, by a mile. I'm sure part of it was an injury, but the other part? Probably typical Miami player pouting. There really will be no room for that stuff on this team. I heard an interview with Zach Thomas on Sirius the other day about playing in the 4-3 versus the 3-4. He said its not that big a difference, but the 3-4 gives you more options and is a little harder for the QB to read. He said people have me pigeon holed as a 4-3 because of my size, but I prefer the 3-4 and played it all year. Ray Lewis got in Vilmas ear about the 3-4, because his stats went down in it as well. He stopped complaining once the Ravens got Ngata. At this point Vilma is a backup, why is everyone crying? If he started out in a 3-4 this would never be an issue. Remember, Belicheck was persueing moving up to get Vilma on draft day because he thought he would be perfect for his D. So why is he not perfect for Mangini's? Because he doesn't want to be. If they trade him for less than a 4th they better send him somewhere cold.
What a biased and therefore unreliable post. He's pouted? Because he's from Miami? You want to see pouting? How about Coles? (FSU) Kendall (BC) Dyson (Utah) Baker (MSU)
Why is it biased? Because I made one remark that Miami players tend to pout when they don't get their way? Lets see what basis there is for this. Ray Lewis, Micheal Irvin, Jeremy Shockey, KWII, Warren Sapp and both Moss brothers. I'm sure i missed a few. Coles- I agree. Both publicly and privately. Plays hard every time he is on the field though.Toughest player in the league. Kendall-dont agree. They promised him money and reneged, what was he supposed to do? Mentored the o-line. Dyson- where has he pouted? Baker-stand up player. Deserves the ball more. I don't remember him complaining about the style of offense that hurts his numbers. Improved dramtically as a blocker because that is what he was asked to improve on.
I don't know 100%. However,I do believe Kendall who clearly wanted to stay with the Jets. This seems to be a more frequent accurance with the Jets, but this time it didn't seem like a agent"miscommunication". Kendalll said he was told personally.
But that's only one aspect of whatever was discussed. I seriously doubt the Jets said to PK "OK, next year we'll give you an extra million, no sweat, swearsies" and Pete said "Sure, I don't need that in writing, I trust you." Not likely, IMO.
