I predict the Mets owning the NL East, until the last week when the Phillies pull ahead and take the division on the last day. Leaving the Mets out of the playoffs. Any chance that could ever happen?
Why is that? Because I'm a fan of a team who also once collapsed? Okay. But I was more referring to your post about this upcoming baseball season and the talent on our respective teams, and why your analysis is wiggity-wiggity-wack.
I'm not getting too into this, but there's a huge difference between motivating a bunch of excited 23 year old kids into playing .500 baseball and getting the most out of 30-35 year old veterans. The fact that he succeeded in Florida means nothing to the New York Yankees and he still has a lot to prove under more attention and scrutiny from both the media and his own players.
Beckett will be fine, Dice-K will be fine, and Buchholz is quite different from the Yankees youngsters in that he's already pitched a no-hitter in the majors and that his era has never been above 3 at any level during his career (outside of only 8 starts at AAA last year). I'm not saying it'll be that low in the majors but I think it's highly unlikely he goes higher then a mid-3. The Boston rotation is still one of the stronger in the AL, IMO. Their question marks lie in what kind of offense they're getting outside of Ramirez, Ortiz, and Youkilis, and (like everyone else) middle relief. And I know someone is going to mention that Phil Hughes had a perfect game before he got hurt to counter the Buchholz no-hitter thing, but Hughes pitched to only 6 batters in innings 7-9 last year (according to ESPN) so he has not yet proven whether he can hold up in the later innings.
Come we've been through this a million times..... look at the Mets record from June 1st on. They played under .500 baseball; there is no collapse just a team that wasn't very good and quite honestly was very lucky to even be in a position to make the playoffs. As far as this thread..... why? I ripped some new Yankee troll for well trolling the Mets Springs Training thead and you start this assanine thread. Come on.....
good job on snuffing out trolls on both sides dude. on a seperate note though, a 7 game lead with 17 to play is a collapse-theres simply no two ways about it.....and youre probably the only person Ive ever seen not admit it was a collapse
Oh I admit it was a bad stretch by a team that it shouldn't have happened to but it started way before the last month of the season. The Phillies simply were a better team the last 4 months of the season coincidently when Howard got healthy.
Are you seriously praising trading away Milledge for Bryan Schnieder and Church comon Schnieder may be a good defensive catcher but he sucks at the plate. And Church is a below average OF. IMO they didnt get much better, there pitching rotation did, but there pos players got worse I would rather of had Gomez then Church and Lo Duca was a better all around player than Schnieder. Couple that with Alou being as old as the sun and all Pedro getting old in a hurry and El Duque completely spent. I really dont think they are better than the Yankees, The yankee still have a young Core and are getting a better rotation by throwing all these youngsters in.
I was with you until you said that Gomez was better than Church. There's a difference between utilizing youth and overvaluing it. Don't make that mistake.
Can this be the "Official Mets vs. Yankees Bullshit Thread?" Maybe everyone can take care of that garbage in here? Or will Mets vs. Yankees bullshit continue to destroy every other thread in the baseball section?
Lets take a look and see what we determine If you look at the infield I have to think that Jeter, ARod, Cano and whatever body is playing 1st for the Yankees is better than Wright, Reyes, Castillo and Delgado. Listen the Mets infield is no joke but the Yanks IF has proven to be better. The only place the Mets have the edge is 1st base but lets be honest a platoon is better than Delgado last year. Outfield: I think the edge is to the Mets simpy because Beltran is the best of the guys. I think Matsui at the plate is the best Yankee OF hitter. Damon and Melky are a solid CF combo. I don't think Church is an upgrade over Green for the Mets and Alou is still a huge risk that the Mets are gambling on. Although Endy Chavez gives the Mets some help off the bench C: I think it's a draw, Posada had a career year but he is getting up in age and we know Schnieder can't hit the side of the barn while he's at bat but I'll take him defensively over Posada SP: This to me is in favor of the Mets ..... for now. Not to say I won't change my mind later. I really like the kids the Yanks have but they are kids and I think alot of people are placing unrealistic expectations on these kids. I'll take Johan and Pedro at the top over Wang and Pettite. I'll still take Maine and Perez over the unknowns. I have no faith in whoever the Mets put in as the 5th guy in the rotation then again Yankee fans don't have faith in Moose. If the kids live up to expectations the Hughes and Kennedy will be better than Perez and Maine. Bullpen: Mets, this is a huge weak spot on both teams and they will lose alot of game because lets be honest.... they both suck. I think however the Mets middle relief sucks less. Give me Heilmann, Sanchez (hopefully) and Smith over what the Yanks will have out there sans Joba. Obviously he greatly improves the Yankees mid relief but one guy doesn't make a bullpen Closer: Give me the greatest all time over the redneck. There is no way I could ever be convinced to take Wagner over Mo. Wagner is a bitch, straightup. Nothing but whining about uhhhh I need to be in a save situation. Manager: Girardi..... he's yet to manage in NY. I see his relationship with the ownership as a love hate relationship. Girardi has alot of pressure and certainly some huge shoes to fill. He had no pressure in Florida and now he has more pressure than any other manager or coach outside of a few college football and basketball teams. Willie hopefully has learned his lesson but I doubt it. I'll give my edge to a guy who has managed in NY as opposed to a guy who only played there. Although like the pitching I might change my mind mid-season. Overall I don't see either team being that much better than the other. I think quite honestly they are fairly even. If they played in the series I'd give the edge to the Mets if they have a healthy Santana and Pedro who could probably win 3 or 4 games between them.
Lastings Milledge is going to be average at best. Church is better than you are making him out to be. He had 15 HRs and 43 doubles last season. You know damn well that the gaps in RFK decreased his HR total and that will improve at Shea. Gomez was a longer way away than Milledge was. Therefore, yes. I am saying that the Milledge trade will pay off for the Mets. All Lo Duca did really was bring average defense, a firey personality that often got him in trouble...and a good offensive bat. In his 2nd year with the Mets, the offense really dropped off and he became just another catcher. You are really undervaluing Schneider in this deal. I don't need a big bat in the 8 hole. Give me gold-glove type defense and keep this pitching staff going well, I'll take it. Alou may be as old as the sun, but is still one of the better RBI men in the game. .340 avg last year, nuff said. There is absolutely no way the Yankees rotation is better than the Mets right now.
All of it was pretty fair (although the Yankees bullpen with Joba is much better, w/o Mets get the advantage) except for this. Posada's been one of the best catchers of the last decade, and is coming off a career year, and he's only equal to a good defensive catcher who is a PATHETIC offensive player? Please. If Posada falls off a cliff this year offensively, then maybe they'll be equal. As full time catchers, Posada's LOWEST OPS+ is 109 (in 2005, has gone up substantially each of the last two years to 122 and 154, respectively.). Schneider's HIGHEST is 97 in 2005, and has regressed to the 70's the last two years. Posada's production has to be cut in half for Schneider to get an advantage.
Guess the Right fielders: RF #1 in 2007: 144 games .272/.349/.464, 114 OPS+, 15 homers, 43 doubles RF #2 in 2007: 158 games .283/.369/.445, 114 OPS+, 16 homers, 43 doubles
Fair enough..... As I said I don't think much of Schnieder but I think defensively he brings alot to the table. I wasn't entirely clear either but I liek Castro as a backup. He should start about 1/3 of the games for the Mets wile Jorge will likely push 125+ games caught. Castro isn't a star but he is a solid bench player.
You should note that RF #2 had an injury for 6-8 weeks in the spring that resulted in him being grossly out of shape for the first 1/3 of the season.
