Anyway another messy public contract negotiation , could be an interesting off season , Vilma , Chad and Coles!! Does Coles deserve a 4 year deal?? or would they be better trading him for a bigger ,quicker option ? Cotchery can be our possesion receiver we need the deep threat.
If the Jets have offered to guarantee Coles' salary of $11m over the next two years it should be easy for them to come up with a four-year package that has little or no more guaranteed money. This should be possible and I hope the team does sign him up. He can be a bit of a whiner but he is a terrific football player. The crunch will come if Coles is looking for a much bigger signing bonus. I must also say that it's disconcerting to hear another player claim they were promised a new deal and then didn't get one. Is a pattern developing?
Either way I wont lose sleep over this issue. My only concern is the locker room, we cant afford to have "another" situation to unfold, like with, Pete Kendal. Coles has done some amazing things for us, can he continue to be productive though?
On the one hand, I think two guaranteed years is pretty good, but on the other hand, if we are going to make it out of stink-zone, then we're going to need team chemistry. If Coles can deliver that most ineffable of products, then he's worth WAY more than 2 years guaranteed.
I hate to key on this but it certainly does seem like Tangini speaks out of both sides of their mouths when it comes to long term deals. This has the potential to become another Kendall if Tanny handles this situation the same as he did last year. I would LIKE TO THINK he's gained some valuable experience and doesn't SCREW IT UP AGAIN!!!!
Yes he deserve it. If half of what those things said are true about him being a top notch leader, and helping keeping the players focused, liaison with management/player issues, and the way he plays week in and week out...Yes he deserves to finish his career as a Jet. The Jets need to make a good faith move here. What free agent would want to come to a team that seemingly has a pattern of lying to players.
Coles has to pay for that shopping mall he built in Jacksonville somehow. The upkeep on a 30,000 square feet house and its supporting staff doesn’t come cheap.
Dump the Bum!!! A cry baby thug who is already making great $$$ is not needed in my company. There are plenty of guys that can do what he can for a lot less $$$. Just need a QB who can put the ball where it needs to be!
I think this is a statement issue: Pay Coles. Reward guts, loyalty, talent, grit, and my best guy on that team.
Not again! I will say that he does deserve the respect and $ he is getting and wanting an extension or new contract does say he wants to remain a Jet for the remainder of his career. It would be important to know If he gets a new deal ; if its structured to give him guaranteed money ECT. Because I have never fully trusted him when he bolted back in the day and if they throw a boat load at him and he has previsions in the contract that allow him to depart after two years then he just might take the money and run!
I believe that Coles was really affected by Pennington's offering to reduce his salary to get him back. His relationships with his team mates grew as he continually paid the price for the limitations on the line, in the other WRs, and in the backfiield. The NYJs have taken full advantage of Coles' performance on the field and in the locker room -- it has paid huge dividends in team morale, cohesiveness, and spirit. Pay Coles. Show the team just how the NYJ treats its very best giving his very best. If the NYJ don't pay Coles, the team as a whole will be effected -- more so than with Pete Kendall who only affected the line.
Coles is a great asset to this team, he was the MVP just 2 years ago, and probably would have been again this year had he not been hurt. If all Coles wants is a 4 year deal we should give it to him. Unless he is asking for something rediculous such as like 22+ million in bonuses he needs to be retained. Coles is the only real locker room reader we have left, Chad is diminished in this role, because he is no longer a starter, on defense, revis and Harris are too young, Rhodes doesn't strike me as the type, and Vilma's future is way up in the air. He probably is too hurt to trade, so he will be around, but as the "second tier" ilb. so who knows if they are going to want to listen to him much anymore... Coles is really the only guy we have left. Also as others have noted, if we deny him his deal, what FA will want to sign here with an organization with a reputation for lying to it's top players? I wouldnt be too interested when I know I can get a deal of just as good quality (as much money) from most teams in the league....
Work some cap magic and pay the man. I'd like to see Coles retire as a member of the New York Jets. Aside of that he's the best WR we have and he would not be easy to replace.
Coles is the least likeable Jet that I like. He complains all the time and is a cry baby. However, he is a warrior and plays as tough as anyone on the field. That is why everyone likes him. Off the field, not so good. Kinda like the opposite of Chad.
I don't think the Jets have ever had a guttier receiver with better hands since I've been watching them. I went to a lot of games last year and saw this guy go out there and run routes and block when he could barely walk. He was having trouble getting up, but he would grin and bear it and go back to the huddle. I think he's still capable of another 1,000 yard season or two, and with an improved running game and pass blocking, he'll show up again. I also think this could be a Strahan-like ploy to get a rest for a good part of the offseason and avoid part of Mangini's hell camp. That wouldn't surprise me one bit. -X-
Coles is worth keeping despite his age because he's a leader. They better not Kendall him. I am however, becoming increasingly annoyed by greedy players that want contract extensions when they still have plenty of time left on their existing contract. If Coles wants leverage, he needs to stay healthy and lead this team into the playoffs.
It used to bother me, but the fact of the matter is the NFL is different from any other league. The physical toll is tremendous, and the contracts aren't guaranteed. When you're a quiet type like Coles who likely doesn't have a future as an analyst and is lacking for endorsements, it makes plenty of sense to pursue a renegotiation. The Jets, and any organization, have to make a decision about whether or not it's worth their while, and there's where the risk lies. -X-
