    I say go for it.

He doesn't have to start right away, he would only have to be in the game in situations he would rush the passer.

He looks a little bit like a project to me, but I don't see anyone else desirable at #6.

Bryan Thomas isn't a bad 3-4 OLB at all though...and Gholston is more versatile than Thomas is.

So reasons Vernon Gholston shouldn't be drafted:

    Not great in coverage
He's buff and therefore must do steroids
The only reason we know he exists is because he's so muscular he made a name for himself on the internetz
He's quiet and reserved, which no NFL pass rusher (or good player) has ever been...ever

These all sound like perfectly legit reasons...

I have to admit, these concern me a bit now also....not so much the weightlifter thing but the last two and the fact that he readily admits to drinking beer. What's that all about when you're looking to get picked early? You mention you're a drinker just to let everyone know ahead of time?

Sounds a little like John Abraham.

6th overall pick shouldn't be one dimensional. I was fired up about this guy but honestly I've never seen him play and if it is true that he can't do anything other than pass rush, then we may as well be drafting David Bowens.

At this point I think the Jets best bet might be to just trade down.

    Every pass rusher disappears.

Chris Long disappeared against Texas Tech and got most of his sacks against the really weak ACC competition. Why no knocks on him for that?

Even in the LSU game where Gholston "disappeared" he had a few pressures and hurries on tape.

If drinking beer in college was reason not to draft somebody, they wouldn't have enough players left to complete the first round.

Gholston cant cover remotely well. It would be different if he had some "possibilities" in this area of concern, but I honestly dont see it. He probably wont even participate in the combine from some of the things I am hearing, which will only drop him further down the chain. His frame will be a huge issue as we get closer to the draft, and I will say that he gives up on WAY to many plays. He just acts as if he has no real desire to play the game, just look at the bowl game he was recently in. That was hella poor. He has not played good against any top teams, except, for the Michigan game in 07' against Long. He plays like a rock star against the piss poor teams though, I will give him that.

I live in the Columbus area, and I watch OSU play every saturday. I have never been impressed with Gholston. He is good, but there is way better. Even in this draft, I am willing to bet atleast two players at the same OLB position are better all around. Those two individuals are Chris Long and Cliff Avril. Those are the most well rounded guys at that position. IMO

I dont care what anyone says, he is being over hyped. You can deny it all day, but the one trick pony, internet freak of nature, is nothing more then that.

He will be a good player, but better players will be there for us at #6. Gholston wasn't even the 3rd best player on OSU's D, IMO. I believe that he shouldn't be anywhere near where he is being ranked. He is more of a late 1st early 2nd rounder IMO.

We need more from our 6th pick. IMHO I dont think there are many players that are worth taking at our pick. I hope we trade down to gather an extra pick from the deal, right now, I think the best players for us are swinging in the middle of the first. If we dont trade down, then I would much rather have Chris Long, or Ellis. If either of those players are there, I would take them anyday over Gholston at the 6 spot.

Gholston is not worth the 6th pick in the draft. Not at all. I find it funny that almost everyone that lives in the Ohio area, that actually watch OSU games, think he is a very over hyped player. Good times..

You're using the Sporting News as a serious draft source? They have Brohm and Ryan going 4 and 5 on their website.

Good post... thanks for the excellent take. I'm pretty sure Tangini is aware of Gholston's negatives too and now I'm also thinking we need to trade down. I guess it's all going to depend on who's on the board at the time and how badly other teams want our spot.

You know what's funny is that you just know if we pass on him and take someone else and the Pats take him and he excels, all of the people who are claiming he is overrated will conveniently forget they said that.

You're preaching to the choir. I live 8 miles from the Horseshoe and go to all the games. Some people just don't get it. I'm not even a Buckeye Fan, I go to the games because my work offers their employees tickets and I love College Football. I have no dog in this fight, and I love some Buckeye players...Like J.L. and M.J and I was the biggest supporter on this site for AJ Hawk 2 years ago. With Gholston, I called like I see it. Not even close to be worth a sixth pick.

All I know is, after seeing how the Giants got in Brady's face all day, I want some of that. However we get there we'll have to leave up to Tangini, so I hope they're doing their homework.

If they don't make some major moves in F/A and in the draft, I'm gonna be REAL pissed.

I always back-up my posts and will be glad to eat crow if I'm wrong.....it will be interesting. I have no problem admittting I'm wrong next year, if Gholston flourishes, let's see if others will do the same, when he stinks up the joint. There's a higher probability I'm spot on Gholston's ability, since I've seen every play of his College career.

God I really wish we didn't beat the Chiefs in that meaningless week 17 contest because then we'd be debating McFadden, Chris Long, Jake Long or Dorsey. All you posters that were screaming to "just win the game for revenge against Herm", how you feeling now?

I'm feeling fine. What was I supposed to do, go to the game with my family and root for the Chiefs?

You've got to be kidding, my man.

If all Gholston can do is rush the passer, that's fine with me. Move him around and let him rush on every down. I don't really care if he's not that great in coverage, because neither of our current OLB's are good in coverage, but they can't even rush the passer. Let him blitz on every down like LT.

Silence is deafening. Just think what we could've done with that third pick.
