why don't you calm down...I wanted to make a separate thread, basically this is about more than Samuel, its about the Jets mentality that teh fans somehow adopted...we settle for average players and dont go for the big fish...if you have a problem with teh thread, don't read it...

It's quite funny. As I've been saying for a while, it's almost as though this fanbase is so used to mediocrity, they don't think a team with a lot of cap room can address multiple areas of the team in one off-season.

I think it is more a result of watching the Giants front four win the Super Bowl. Therefore, fans have switched over to "dominant O and D lines, make everyone better, not the other way around" mode.

If the Jets lines were decent and required only a player or two, I think most people would be for an A.Samuel signing. However, with two large holes (LG/RT) and one smaller-but-not-going-anywhere hole (Brandon Moore) on the O-Line and a humongous hole in the middle on the D-Line, fans would prefer free agent money go there rather than waiting for draft picks to develop. (Whereas a pass-rushing LB or CB doesn't need as much adjustment time going from college to the pros...provided they have a high skill level and NFL-caliber athleticism.)

I wouldn't be opposed to Samuel -- it's not my money, he's a very good player and we could use as many of those as we can get. But I also think he showed us how absolutely unclutch he was in the SB, and we've had enough of those guys in the past.

That’s a stretch. I don’t think anyone on this board is happy with being mediocre. Instead of short memories we have long memories. Wasted money on potential studs that turned out to be average. A pick up that will not break us but will hamper our ability to pick up the "REAL" needs that have affected this team. Are you going to stand there and say we need a Corner back more then we need a True 3-4 nose tackle or a LT Guard that will open a hole? It’s not a statement it’s a debate and the funny thing here is you can’t push your opinion on someone else; you can sure comment on it but that’s it. People are in love with the Idea of signing this guy! Chances are they are going to franchise the guy anyway! I don’t ever listen to these reporters who think they know it all! The Pats aren’t going to allow a fire sale and let people walk out the door without a fight! If you were Asante Samuels would you leave the best chance you had to actually winning a super bowl to go to a team that’s in the midst of re-building? Let Logic do the walking.

Are you going to say we need a Cb more than a DT, Pass Rushing Defensive End or Three Offensive Linemen. If we are to compete we have to use that money to sign Quality Free agents. If we do that there will not be enough left for Samuel.

We are going to be about 30 million under the cap, how does this trade impede us from getting other free agents?

And this will help the D-Line, more coverage sacks will happen and make the line look better.

Along with that, this allows us to blitz extra people who wouldn't be double covering now that we have samuel.

Which FA NT are you picking up?
Which FA DE are you picking up?

Answer, there isn't a blue chipper available at either position. We can draft a NT (there are some decent prospects this season), and we need an OLB a hell of a lot more than a DE, and that guy is likely Gholston.

I'll agree that a FA RT (lol) would be a great pickup. The thing is we can get Andrews, and Samuel, and still be in the market for another servicable D lineman. This is not an all or nothing thing, and having a great secondary will help give the new pieces on the DL time to gel.

The highest paid CB gets 11 million.

If Asante asks for that, why not give it to him?

Faneca will probably cost 6 mil

i agree with some of you guys...lets sign a no-name dt and ot off of the bench of another team cause we think he is going to be a stud and pass up on a pro bowl corner because poteat is great...can't believe you guys we have alot of needs and a corner is one of them! Just watch, when whoever is opposite Revis next year is getting torched every game and we are playing musical corners, then tell me we don't need Samuel...

Did you guys not even read what I said? Multiple positions can be upgraded in one off-season. There's already about $28M in cap room, after some dead weight is traded/released, it will be $40M+. If you have the opportunity to add a great player, you do it. We'd still have over $30M+ in cap room and an entire draft left to fill those other positions.

You're only proving my point that the mind set is only a few of those holes can be filled in one off-season. That's not the case. There's a lot of money and an entire draft to build the team. Signing Samuel doesn't change that.

Can you say Andre Dyson! Remember that guy? He was injuried . He has had the time to heal by now and has all of this off seson to get back to form or are you going to say he's all washed up? Its a long road till the 08 season starts. We actually picked this guy up to be the shut down corner for us and I think he can be that guy! There not going to let samuels go and he's not going to have a desire to leave!

10-4 I did thats why I said they wont let him go so its pointless to debate it . Until it happens its all a conversation . I just think there are other more pressing needs.

yea well according to all the reports Asante is leaving...and Dyson isnt washed up, but he isn't a top tier corner...he sucks in run defense and his coverage isnt great...Samuel is a huge upgrade...altho...it will be interesting to see how Justin Miller develops, although I would love to try him at safety...

There will be an offer Im sure and many other teams throwing dough at him for his services if it gets that far! You think Justins big enough to play at safty or did you mean Dyson? Justin holds too much as it is and has chicken legs. wasnt tackling a problem for him anyway?

I meant Justin...i think he could be a huge hitter...I remember watchin highlight vids of him in college killin people and I still remember a hit he put on Keary Colbert during a Carolina-Jets game his rookie year I believe...as far as his legs go, I thought he was pretty big, hes def. bigger then Dyson...I don't think I have ever seen him stood up or clobbered on a kick-off return, that does say alot, he could punish people...
