The Jets lead by their ball hawking secondary and revitalized pass rush upset the San Diego Chargers to reach SB XL111 against the Dallas Cowboy who beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24 13 just hours earlier. Kellen Clemens hit Chad Johnson for 45 yards and the go ahead TD after an incredible 3rd down conversion by Lavernous Coles who took a viscous shot by outside linebacker Shawn Merriman and FS Marlon McCree but held on to keep the drive alive. Coles who was banged up coming into the game made 3 key catches to keep the chains moving in the 4th quarter drive that put the Jets into the SB. The Jets went in for the go ahead score with 2:55 left in the game 17 to 13. Rivers was sacked twice by Suggs on the final SD drive and Samuels picked off his desperation pass on 4th and 12 to seal the victory for the Jets. The Jets took the early lead on a 96 yard kickoff return by Leon Washington but had trouble moving the ball against the SD D and punted on 6 consecutive drives. The Jets D was up to the task and held the Chargers to two FG in the first half and went in at the intermission up 7 to 6 in a tough defensive battle. Darren Sprouls set up the go ahead score for the Chargers at the 10 minute mark of the 4th quarter when he returned a Jets punt 45 yards to the Jets 25 yard line. Tomlinson broke a run up the middle where it appeared Harris was chop blocked low for the go ahead TD. After exchanging punts Clemens seemed to get his feet under him and drove the Jets down the field with a combination of quick short outs to Cothchery and a 3 brilliant diving catches from Coles just over the sticks. It appeared the Bolts had forced a 4th down when Coles got sandwiched by the FS and Merriman put a viscous shot on him right when the ball arrived but Coles who looked like he was knocked out on the play somehow hung on to move the chains. On the very next play Clemens hit a streaking Chad Johnson on a skinny post to send the Jets to their 1st SB in 40 years.
That would be a dream come true. 32 yrs of mostly down yrs as a jets fan. Before I die I hope we see another. They certainly take yrs off your life.
The most believable part of that Winston is Coles ability to hang onto the ball despite getting hit by a beer truck. I'm afraid that LC is going to become the next Chrebet.
I guess this is the place to be delusional. Samuel- I really only want us to get him AFTER we address our needs. This would be the quintessential "Cherry on top". Chad Johnson- I'd love to have him. again, after we've addressed our needs. No Line so it doesn't matter who is @ WR right now. Suggs- IMO, I'll pass. After his rookie season he's gone down hill in stats. One of those players who needs beef around him and that we don't have up front. Besides, I believe the Ravens will sign him to a LTD.
