I can obviously understand the Yanks not wanting him to go to Boston but I cannot understand for the life of me why Yanks fans wouldn't want him anchoring their staff for the next 5 years. He is by far better than anyone on the Yanks staff right now and it is awfully risky going into a season with the rotation as inexperienced as it is. As a Mets fan, I want him on the Mets too..
As a Met fan I will be the first to say not to get your hopes up, they will find a way to screw it up.

Because Hughes projects to be an ace. He was a top 5 pitching prospect in all of baseball. With him, Joba, Wang, Pettite, and Kennedy, with Mussina, Rasner, and a few others making spot starts, the rotation should be set for the next couple years. Also, do we want to give up an assload of talent for a pitcher who we'll have to sign to an obscene contract?
Key word being projects to be.. While Hughes might be a top 5 prospect in all of baseball, Santana is the top pitcher in all of baseball still in his prime. I just find it suprising how much opposition there is to aquiring the best pitcher in the game from Yanks fans. That rotation you mentioned isn't scary at all.
It's not scary...yet. That's the key point. We're tired of watching tons of youth being traded away for little to no gain. Is Santana the best baseball has to offer? Possibly. His numbers were down last year. That's factual. Will he rebound? Maybe. I'd give him a much better chance to do so in the NL, especially for a team like the Mets who are already contenders. In the AL East though, he'd have a tougher time getting wins, and if last year was a sign of what is to come, rather than an aberration, then he'd be a total waste for the Yankees. That's a big reason Yankees fans would be happy to see him in Shea. Even if he is once again the most dominant pitcher in the sport, we've kept our youth, and not risked him having that success with the one team that poses a threat to us.
i disgree. Our young talent is enough to give me confidence. Johan would be great,but not worth giving up hughes,joba or kennedy. I'd rather take the chance that we develope multiple young stars from our system.
For the Mets, making a deal is the easy part. Signing him will be the tough part if they don't give in to their 5 year policy on any pitcher. He won't agree to that no matter how much money they throw at him. (Or at least that's the rumor). Oh, and that's one of the reasons the Yankees aren't running after him too.
Captain Obvious says: Obviously the dollars in the contract are not the important thing here (between SNY and CitiField the Mets have/will have more than enough money to do whatever they want). There seems little doubt to me that the Mets as currently constituted cannot compete for the World Series, so this would seem to be the only way that Mets baseball is very interesting in 2008. I have no idea what will happen past that, and neither does anyone here - that's Omar's job, and Omar's neck on the line if it doesn't work out. Yes, sometimes it's worth repeating the obvious point that no one posting on a message baord really has a freaking clue as to whether a trade will turn out well or not.
Mets or Yankees would be fine with me. Not the Red Sox though. I am 50/50 on Santana. He is a beast, but I would love to see what Hughes has. Either way I will be happy unless he goes to Boston. Then I will not watch baseball in 08 prolly. haha.
Value, value, value. Normally, I don't care how much money the Yankees throw at players, because it's very unlikely that the money will prevent them from making additional moves. But this is a special case. Santana is great, and likely will remain great. But the combination of Hughes, Kennedy, Melky, and/or Jackson/Tabata will likely provide enough value to the Yanks over the years to come (in dollars as well as talent) to make the trade unprofitable.
