i thinik it has alot to do with age and history the giants were around long before the jets, the yankees were around long before the mets. both the mets and jets came into existence in the early 60s if i am correct. part is also that most mets fans have history with the dodgers or giants (baseball) and hate the yankees, i know it was that way with my mom and most times team allegiance is passed down from parent to sibling unless there is a frontrunner team that a kid jumps on as a kid and doesnt run away when they start losing. i am a mets, jets (used to be rangers, although i refuse to watch them anymore as i really do hate anything to do with dolan) and was a bulls fan due to nothing more than michael jordan and friends i have in the chicago area. but i dont really watch either the nba or nhl anymore. in college its notre dame in football (because of my mom) and uconn because i live in ct and know some people who played there and played against a couple others during high school. the mets were a very good team when i was 9-14 years old and drew me in in addition to the fact my mom hates the yankees so i would never have been allowed to be a yankees fan. the jets also had a pretty damn good team during that same time and i really really enjoyed freeman mcneil and thought he was a great running back. i dont know i think i enjoy being the underdog, i can still remember so many vivid memories about the mets winning in 86 and i cried when the rangers won in 94. i almost feel that yankees fans are cheated because they get too used to winning and it doesnt mean as much when they do, as a mets and jets fan i can really appreciate when things go well.
Jets/Mets, I think you are reaching with the divisional/National-national ties It makes more sense of Giants/Yanks because they have a longer history/tradition, while both the Jets/Mets have made their fans suffer through torture losses while occasionally having a flashy resurgence while having a similar origin.
Jets, Orioles, Capitals, Wizards fan. Can't say I jump on the bandwagon. Since I'm 29 I never got to enjoy the O's when they were winners. The only championship I've seen a team of mine win was the Maryland Terps win the NCAA Basketball Championship, well the Womens team won one too but I rather crucify my balls than watch a Womens Basketball game All in All I'm used to seeing my teams lose and have no inkling to switch over to a winner.
I am 27, born in Bergen County and moved to northwest jersey at age 7. I grew up a Jets fan because my grandfather has had season tickets since the Jets became the Jets, and I went to most of the home games since I can remember. I was not really into baseball till I started playing minor league ball around age 7. My dad was not a big baseball fan. All my friends were Giants/Yankee fans, so I just became a Yankee fan. The only strange thing was that my favorite players were all Mets.... Daryl Strawberry, Greg Jefferies, etc. I really got more into baseball in my young teen years, but my baseball fandom is nothing compared to how much I love football. Other than that, I root for the Devils and Nets because they're my local teams. I am not a baseketball fan, and I watch hockey when I can, but it is too damn expensive to go to many games. My wife is also a huge Devils fan.
