In reading through some of these threads here today, I started thinking how bad the state of the personnel is for the Jets franchise. Not even including the rookies, since none of them is the rookie of the year. Which Jets player do you guys think is irreplaceable?? In taking a glance at our roster, I find it amazing that this team has that poor a group of talent. Its not NY Knicks bad yet, but with the exception of the dolphins we are pretty bad talent wise. If you even look at the rest of the none playoff teams in the league, they seem to have that one player that everyone around the league knows and respects as a great player... NOT THE Jets!!
I am including one of the rookies- Harris, then Rhodes & Mangold. That's it. Cotchery is really good, but not Top 5, and I'm a Cotch supporter- with the right QB he could very well be. Revis is on the cusp of being a top CB in this league- I just need him to show me a little more as it's really tough to break the Top 5 there.
Mangold and Rhodes. You'll hear no argument on the first one and some for the second one. No way Lynch is better than Rhodes. He made this year's Pro-Bowl on rep rather than performance. I would also say that Revis has the potential to be included. As well as Harris.
I said top 5 to give the team a chance... but my thinking is this, given the chance to upgrade any position, I can't say I wouldn't replace Kerry Rhodes.. Harris and Revis has not played enough for me to say I wouldn't swap them out for some veteran. Mangold is ok, but I would swap him for a better player in heart beat. I guess what I'm saying is, none of the Jets have done enough or look good enough to warrant any significant amount of loyalty
statistically, Harris had a lot of tackles for the Jets, BUT!! does that mean he's that good" or the team is just that bad? It's too early to make that call I think. A few yrs ago Vilma was rookie of the yr. Now, he might not be a starter on a very bad team! Half a season is just not enough time time to make that call.
harris had a bunch of sacks and forced fumbles in only 9 starts...and even tho it doesnt show on stats revis did very well against top WR's.
with the exception of Leon Washington returning kicks, I don't see any Jets player as irreplaceable on this roster. I'm thinking in terms of am I upgrading this poosition or is the other guy just as good as what I already have? Washington returning kicks is the only such person on this roster.
What players you see as being better are available to swap out? Young players are not great out of the box. They need time to develop. If you are continiously swapping out guys, you will get no cohesion, not many wins and watch as your former young players develop into stars on somebody elses roster. Loyalty works both ways. First, they have long term contracts with disasterous cap ramifications if you trade or cut them, so you are married to them for awhile. Also, if a franchise shows no loyalty to a player, the other players in the league will notice this and never want to come here. Thus, the guys you want to sign here, will pass on the Jets.
Lets put the Harris thing like this: Name 5 other LB's you would trade Harris for. If you cant think of 5 he is in.
He's still a return man. No matter how you slice it, he's a return man. There are 30 runningbacks you'd rather have than Leon, but return men have a ton to do with who is around them. We said the same thing about Justin Miller being irreplaceable returning kicks last season. He got hurt, Washington stepped up and put up similar numbers, and now Washington is the man. KR is replaceable.
I can't think of 5 3-4 ILB's that I would trade him for. If you're strictly talking about 3-4 ILB's then I wouldn't argue if you put him as a top-5.
Rhodes, Mangold, harris has to do it for one more year to be considered in my list, although he is awesome.
Rhodes is the only player I'd consider top 5 at this point, and it's barely in there with arguments for other players also. Harris and Revis aren't even top 10 yet, although they may make that.
