Here we go again. Please bookmark this thread for discussion one year from now. I would certainly like to be wrong, but I know I'm not. It's not just the OL people. There were plenty of times when he had time in the pocket and either threw the ball over the receiver's head, into the ground, or couldn't find the open guy. He wasn't getting a massive pass rush in his face everytime he dropped back.... Oh, but let's hear all about the 4th qtr against the Ravens when they were playing in prevent.
Does his accuracy need improving? Yes it does. Can his accuracy improve with more experience? Absolutely. That's the key. His mechanics can be refined to improve his accuracy. It's happened before to other QB's.
He won't last that long. FWIW, I've been plugging this guy for months because I've seen him play first hand and I truly believe he has what it takes to succeed. Never mind that he played in the subdivision, the guy is a winner. What sealed the deal for me was that he's from NJ, even though that really has nothing to do with his NFL potential. I'd like to see a homegrown take the reigns ...it really can't be much worse then the current situation.
I guess it's how you view it. You see the ones who have improved (Favre, Brady) I see the ones who couldn't cut it (Nagle, Shuler, Leaf). Glass is 1/2 full vs. Glass is 1/2 empty I guess.
I don't know whether Clemens is the answer, but he was better in college and was better in his first season than Eli Manning (nearly a toss up, but slightly better). Eli's first season his OL was terrible and his weapons were somewhat average, just like Clemens. Now everyone thinks Eli has "arrived" as a top QB with a great OL, good weapons, and some coaching. Let's wait and see what happens when we get an OL and another weapon or two, and with Schotty's coaching (Brees credits Schotty as the main reason he became a great QB).
Like i have said many times before, if Chad is moved on draft day, i have no problem spending a third or 4th rounder on Flacco. He has the potential to be great. IMO worst case, he will be a capable backup, which is at worst what we need.
I don't disagree with your point that Clemens was no worse than Eli in his first year but the Jets management seems much less committed to Clemens than the Giants were to Eli. The Giants essentially built their team around their faith that Eli was the foundation. The Jets don't seem to have that same commitment to Clemens. If they don't we are just a rudderless team going nowhere. I don't think you can underestimate the power of organizational commitment. The Giants had it and ran with it the Jets don't have it yet.
No more rookies. Give Clemens this team, we have to play to win now. We are going into year 3 of Mangini's term. It is time to make a run.
What Manning proved yesterday is that when an erratic but enormous talent lke Plaxico Burress has a career day you can beat even a very good team in their own house. Maybe he'll do it again in the Super Bowl, but I'm betting if the Giants beat the Pats the key will be their pass rush, not their QB play.
If the Giants win the SB, Manning will have to play a very good game. The guy proved his mettle on the first half drive against Dallas. I don't think most people get why you need more than a game manager at QB and Manning has proved that he is more than just a game manager.
That's all there is to it with the Clemens argument, but, the way I see it, you'll never know unless you give him ample opportunity to develop... I sure hope he pans out, but I wouldn't bank on it.... All I know, is if we give up on him now, there's a 100% chance he won't turn out to be the Jets' QB of the Future... As it stands, if Clemens is the starter next season, his career could go either way... I'll take that chance...
What you wrote is right. Of course, the Giants had to be more committed to Manning than the Jets are to Clemens for the simple fact that they made a huge trade to acquire him and had to pay him 1st round money.
I could be wrong, but all Eli Manning has done so far is replicate what Tony Eason did in 1985. Eason protected the ball (4 TDs and no picks), threw high percentage passes, and won three road games in the playoffs in an inferior conference. Then he went to the Super Bowl against a great team, one that NE had played closely in the regular season (20-7 loss) and was annihilated. Any QB can have a good three game stretch - even in the playoffs. Right now, the body of work, which is average, is still more of an indication of the QB than three games. Let's not put the "next great QB" crown on Manning just yet. Anyone who predicted 6 weeks ago that the Giants and Manning would be where they are right now would have been called crazy.
Manning is still not a good enough QB to take a team on his shoulders and lead that drive you need to win a Super Bowl. He probably never will be. If the Giants win the Super Bowl it'll be because Tom Brady threw 2 or 3 picks and got sacked a half dozen times in the process, with a fumble in his own end of the field. There are few constants in the NFL, but one of them at the moment is that Bill Belichik NEVER gets beaten by a QB of Eli Manning's capabilities. The Giants defense is going to have to win this game by shutting down the Patriot's offense and contributing some points.
i think we should give clemens some time. He did have some impressive times and throws this season. We can look at Eli as an example. People has been calling for his head since his first game and now has taken the Giants to the super bowl. I think with some time Clemens can be descent.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ogqK5YbOzdg everytime i look at what clemens did with some time in the 4th quarter against the ravens gives me enough reasons to why we can not just give up on him.
Exactly, do we know if he is the guy? No but its not like we can give up on him already, get real dude we have wayy to many needs to draft a qb when we could get a olineman or dlineman that could actually help instead of becoming a distraction
