Trying not to read too much into this article , it does sound like Vilma may either be used elsewhere in the D or may be gone. With the comments that the CS and FO are making it seems one or the other is enevitable Full story http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show/2044-the-ilb-picture-as-vilma-hits-the-comeback-trail
I'm starting to wonder if maybe we could hang on to Vilma. If we can substantially improve the defensive front and get another real 3-4 OLB in there, maybe he can get back to his former effectiveness?
Yep, sounds like he's leaving all right. A mod really need to change the title to this thread, its very misleading.
The more I let this season settle, the more I think Vilma will be back. He is still a talented linebacker but suffered a serious, albeit mysterious, injury. His trade value will be drastically lowered if the front office does try to move him and may not be able to pass a physical until well into training camp. IMO, Vilma lines up next to Harris next year and we have two fine young ILB's. We need to get another OLB (Gholston) and a space eating DT (?), but I think Vilma has more value next to Harris than in any trade.
Well if you are just going to pick apart the transcript then it will say what you want. This is my opinion on reading this , weather you agree or not is your opinion. You need to change your name
The way I read the whole of this article is that either Vilma plays somewhere else on our D (other than MLB) or he will be moved. I don't want him gone and think that Harris and Vilma in tandem is a good formula , but from the time Vilma was placed on IR to present , something doesn't sit right.
I think if he's healthy and can play alongside Harris, it would be the best case scenario. Harris there could make Vilma better.
I agree totally. I think you are reading too much into this. I think the quote simply is stating that Harris will be the play calling ILB and Vilma won't be able to pry it from him. There is another ILB position (3-4 really doesn't have a MLB) that Vilma could fit perfectly into.
Vilma is a great player and I don't think he should be traded for anything less then a 1st rounder. We won't be able to get a first rounder for him especially him coming off a injury season therefore we should just keep him. There is no player in the draft that can be close to the player and leader Vilma is in the second or third rounder... It's not worth it. It doesn't matter that Vilma doesn't fit the 3-4, we should just hope he does in upcoming years because there isn't a 3-4 player late in the draft that be close to Vilma's level in the 3-4.
I usually dont "go here" but I do think that Vilma's intelligence and leadership alongside Harris would be very valuable.
Disagree. I'd like to think that you can find a competent MLB, even in the middle rounds, who can fill that role better than Vilma. Harris coming onboard showed that it wasn't the scheme holding Vilma back, it was Vilma holding himself back. If we can land anything higher than a mid-2nd rounder for him I'll bite...
I agree. People overvalue draft picks a great deal, a lot of them never even make the team. Harris will take a lot of pressure off of Vilma, the two together with the young guys in the secondary we have could be the makings of a great defense. We just need the coaches to do in camp whatever it is they've done during the bye week the past two years. That and a big-time pass rusher on the D line.
How about moving Vilma to draft another Anthony Schlegal with the 3rd round pick we get? That look like equal value to you?
Well when they made the giant leap for Anthony Schlegel, the thinking was a bigger ILB next to Vilma would help.... So, I'd say a real good ILB like Harris will be what they were really looking for.
I don't see the point in moving Vilma. I think we have him for one more year, and he's good enough to give one more shot next to Harris. Barton was a major weak spot and should definitely be gone. Moreover, he's coming off an injury, and I don't think we're going to get our money's worth for him right now. -X-
If you think about most great Ds and LB corps, there's more than one real good guy. The old Giants didn't just have LT, they had Carl Banks and Pepper Johnson with him. I think the fastest way for us to be a contender is going to be on D, we're further along with young talent.
