The reason that I disagree with this statement in whole is that you don't even have to look farther than the Jet's team history to find multiple promising defensive rookies on teams that were headed to hell in a hand basket. James Hasty and Erik McMillan came on board in 1988 and Jeff Lagemann and Dennis Byrd came on in 1989. The Jets were headed south in a hurry. The NFL just doesn't let you put all your eggs in a one or two baskets and survive for very long. The Jets need to go get a lot of quality depth in a hurry and because of some of their moves in the last couple of years that's going to be hard to do. Maybe they can pull it off, but this really looks like a last place team for the forseeable future to me. It's hard to add the 10 to 12 good players the Jets will need to add over the next couple of years to come back. Particularly when you're taking 95% of your draft value in a given year and putting it into 2 players.
The Jets tried to get offensive linemen in free agency last season but we got outbid. That's why we've been cycling through retreads and undrafted rookies the entire season,we've been trying to find a needle in the haystack because all the needles in the needlestack are gone. Hell, some players we didn't even get outbid for, they just plain didn't want to play for us (IE. Colombo).
I like to think of it as he just wanted to stay with the Cowboys. What a prick for doing that. And Br4dw4y5ux, what're you talking about with the basket analogy? Are you on the "we should have drafted more guys" thing AGAIN?
I am absolutely on that. If we are extremely lucky neither Revis nor Harris will get retired by injury in the next 3 seasons. We're going to need to be extremely lucky for that to happen.
huh? It's been quite a while since we lost someone we drafted to a career ender, hasn't it? I'm not sure who the last one was.
And you would have taken....? We'll be extremely lucky if they aren't forced to retire by injury? What? That happens everyday? It must suck to live in such a pessimistic, short sighted world. And for the millionth time...you do not draft like that. Especially in such a mediocre draft. Why would we want to pile on practice squad fodder when we got two guys who look like future pro bowlers and potential all pros?
Nahhh... You hit on a few draft like they just hit on and your team will be stacked... If you walk away from a draft with TWO FREAKING PRO BOWL CALIBER PLAYERS!!!!!! You would have to be insane to find something to whine about.... that's the way they valued that draft and they hit it right out of the park.. That draft is an absolute Grand Slam!!!!! You name players of the past but, not only do I think these players are better, but Of course the team needs to add other players as well.... Last years FA market was overpriced and mediocre - I think they did a great job in avoiding overspending and NOW have the money and a much better FA market... You can't just spend for the sake of spending.... The defense really only needs a few pieces at this point... And a few OL additions will make a huge difference on the entire offense... We lost games by the slimmest of margins... we won games the year before by the slimmest of margins... We should get that back, keep developing and be a contender in 09' after a very nice run next year...
WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF does that mean???? Are you INSANE... Who are you?????? Come on...We'll be extremely lucky if these guys don't get injured... Umm Thanks guy. And the Pats are lucky Brady doesn't get whacked?>??
I'm sorry to go along with the thread derailing but like another poster here was trying to say: We traded away two picks to get Revis and Harris - that means we spent 4 picks to get the two of them. In the draft hitting at a 50% clip is probably better than average. So to use 4 picks to get 2 potential studs is a good thing. Not to mention we got two potential studs at two positions that don't exactly grow on trees. I don't want our FO to gamble like this often - but being as it panned out in this situation there is no room to criticize.
We'll be very lucky if one of them doesn't get hurt in the next 3 years. We lost Vilma to injury this year. We lost Chad to injury in his second year. We lost Jamie Henderson to a car wreck in his 2nd offseason. We lost any chance Glenn Foley would be good to injuries early on. We lost Jon McGraw to injuries early on. The late 80's and early 90's Jets made a habit out of losing people to injury early on. Lately we've been very lucky on injuries, that kind of luck doesn't last for long in the NFL.
He's scared of progress because it means we're not constantly mediocre every year. And if you believe in every fan and media created cliche about sports...progress can only be measured in one way (guess what that way is).
Sheesh.... Why even have any hope? Why bother..... But, for me, I look at the team and moves I think they should make, there's no reason to whine and cry about potential injuries..... Ridiculous... And it also has nothing to do with Revis and Harris that you couldn't have said about any GREAT player the Jets may have aquired.... Those two guys are absolute Grandslams !!!!
Any team is very lucky if their star isn't injured for 3 years. I have no idea what point you're trying to make...cause it certainly doesn't make your "we should have drafted more guys" thing any better. BTW: Then theres really no point in trying then is there? I mean if we're at the bottom we'll never get out of it cause we'd be lucky if anyone stayed healthy.
Revis is hands down the best out of the three. Ross made some plays, but like someone else said, he's more of a zone type of CB who also gets a lot of help from the pass rush. That being said Ross is good and he can also make tackles. He doesnt have the ability to play Man like Revis. Darrelle went up against some of the best in the league and held his own, in his rookie year... to the point where offenses started throwing away from him. This was also on a defense with an atrocious pass rush. I have a lot of confidence that Revis will be one of the top corners in this league for a long time.
Belichik drafted grand slams using the picks he had. He even made more picks out of those picks by trading down and drafting grand slams. Anybody who thinks the Jets are doing anything other than treading water by trading up for ANYBODY doesn't understand how this game works.
Br4dw4y5ux has obviously been "ruined" by years of being a Jets fan. Revis and Harris appear to be grand slams at this point. You would have preferred if we traded down and picked up 4 guys, 2 of which end up "decent" instead?
Unfortunately we didn't have a Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, AND Ty Warren fall into our laps. Seymour = Top 10 pick (actually just outside the top 5, taken right after LT) Wilfork = Top 10 talent that fell to him Warren = Top 10 talent that fell to him It'd be nice to get gifts like that once in a while, wouldn't it? BTW: It took 4 years to collect those 3. But anyway...as long as you keep your statements short and general...you'll always sound like you have a legit argument. I doubt we would have traded up for Revis/Harris if we got as lucky as the Pats have in recent drafts and they simply came to us.
No, I'd have preferred we stayed where we were and picked up 4 guys. Or maybe traded down from the 26 and picked up Harris and somebody else. Find me a game-changing cornerback who has been key to his team's success over a period of years. I can't think of one.
Not to mention there were so many plays this year where if Revis had just turned around he could have had an easy int. That will come with more experience. I would be surprised if he doesn't turn out to be a great corner.
