10:57PM - Solari Interviews With Jets Thursday, January 10th, 2008 by Gary Grund Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News is reporting that the Jets interviewed former Chiefs offensive coordinator Mike Solari in search for an offensive-line coach. Solari was the offensive line coach for the Chiefs between 1997 and 2005. He replaced Al Saunders in 2006 and was the offensive coordinator for Herm Edwards in Kansas City for two seasons. His offense finished 31st overall in the NFL and ranked dead last in the league in rushing, averaging just 78 yards per game on 23 attempts. Keep in mind that Chiefs runningback Larry Johnson missed the final eight games of the season. I am unfamiliar with him, is this a good direction?
Solari's reputation comes from the monstrous line he has to work with during the Priest Holmes years. That line was the bar for those seasons. Now with an aging line and Johnson hurt the stats look bad. I don't know if hes the kind of guy who can come in and fix a line without improving the talent first. I actually don't know many coaches who can take god awful talent and make them play well.
No coach could make this line play better. Clarke and Clement suck. Obviously there must be a talent improvement. But Solari still designed the running game. Coaching is extremely important in OL play. They don't just run round blocking who they please. If the kC kine was great he has to get some credit.
The fact that they are bringing him in, and Callahan, tells you that they are aware of the problem, and looking to garner expert advice on how to fix it.... This is a good thing...
I don't mind this move either....if we can get some good talent on the Oline, I think this can work. KC always had a good Oline until recently, thats because it was neglected for sometime and guys retired, left and so on. Its all about getting the talent here.
Agreed....have to admit at least that we are being aggressive, now hopefully we do the same when it comes to free agency.
The problems with our offensive line are so obvious that I think almost anyone would know what to do as far as increasing talent, but that is only half of the problem; we also need a good coach to get the guys working as a unit.
You have that right. The biggest impact the new O-line coach can have is making the unit gel and work as a unit. The biggest leap the Giants made this season was in its offensive line play. The talent is mostly the same, they just grew together as a unit and the productivity increased greatly.
The Chiefs had a horrible situation, and I think the overall talent level on their line was equal to ours, and they were statistically worse than us both running and passing. I don't care if it's Solari's fault, I'd prefer a guy who succeeded somewhere. -X-
I don't know any coaches that can do that. Taking middle of the road talent to the top can be done with great coaching but losers are losers no matter what you do.
Clement is Clement and Clarke is Clarke. Their season was just abysmal. They would have trouble making the APST (All-Practice Squad Team). I guess the only reason they are still here is we haven't replaced anyone yet. Bender also proved that he is not the guy either. Moore I think is capable, but he needs somebody good next to him.
This guy has experience working with some great offensive lines out in KC... We have two building blocks for Solari to work with... A Great Center in Mangold and a LT with a shiit load of potential in Ferguson, who are both entering this next season as 3rd year starters. This guy just may beable to help these young kids develop and also help Mangini and the coaching staff find prospects in the draft, FA, and overall... Put together a solid O-Line for Thomas Jones and Leon Washington to run behind for years to come. I hope we go after him. To make a long story short... A Change is needed on the O-Line because we cant get worse... I feel we can only get better
I think the jury is still out on Bender. He still may be our RT of the future. I think that they essentially "red-shirted" Bender wanting to give him a full second offseason to learn pass blocking better. Don't be surprised if he wins the RT job next camp. In the preseason games he played he was prone to getting beat by a speed rush, but was maybe our best OL at run blocking.
Here's something I started thinking about when the news of Callahan broke, and this sort of reinforces it in my mind. Maybe there is a very good reason we're bringing in guys who have run offenses in the past. Here are the two reasons I come up with: 1) The have no confidence in Schotty to be an elite play caller. Perhaps though, they feel he has a lot of talent in other facets of the offense, and don't want to fire him. (I'm not sure if they could demote him or not, but would you really want to have a guy you demoted coaching your "Mangini Guys"?) Could they be looking for a guy to come in and redesign the offense under the guise of being an "assistant offensive coordinator"? 2) And this is the option I'm really leaning toward, is they may be planning for Schotty to be packing his bags by his own decision. It could be that they are looking for Schotty's replacement now, before the quality coaching gets gobbled up. This may be a smart move to have someone ready to take over the reigns before BS gets himself a HC job.
I just like it because most of these guys were good enough at their jobs as OL coach to get promotions. Their failures at higher levels shouldn't have a whole lot to do with their offensive line coaching ability. And it also keeps the Jets' FO's options open if the offense sputters all season. They could easily take playcalling duties away from Schotty and give it to Callahan or Solari.
Mangini strikes me as the type who wants to learn and values coaches with experience. I don't think anything like this is a big time knock against our CS. I like that this coaching staff isn't so stupid and arrogant to look for help where they think they need it. But obviously I'm just putting a positive spin on a clueless group of men. It's not even like they've shown any signs of intelligence...4-12 says it all.
It's simple really, if everything that Herm does is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right. This is Mangini's new religion.
