Thanks for the football insight Mr. MIT. I guess you are the only one who is entitled to an opinion around here. Can you go now???? Throwing out personal insults is uncalled for. I thought this board was a place to throw around opinions and ideas? Excuse me for thinking that it is somewhat relevant the Jet QB of the future had a horrible half season. Excuse me for thinking that one player on the Jets is better than another. I didn't realize that TGG was your personal forum and we had to check with you before we post to make sure you agree with the post. I guess I'm wrong. Clemens is the next Tom Brady. Anyone can see. The Jets have no worries at the QB position. Pennington only made the playoffs three times because of blind luck and a tremendous supporting cast. I mean, the Jets of the 02-06 time period have about 10 future HOFers. And this year, for the first 8 games, the Jets were a sure fire playoff team except for Pennington. When Clemens came in, all those stars must have been injured or just started playing crappy on purpose. But Clemens rose above all that and carried the team to three whole wins by throwing for 120 yards a game and 4 whole TD passes. Woop de damn doo! We can have 400 draft McFadden threads and 300 trade Vilma threads and we have had three years of "Pennington the noodle arm sucks threads", but point out something interesting from the Daily News and you jump all over it. When did Petro make you the thread policeman???? I happen to think the Jets are making a mistake. Some people thought the Jets made a mistake for trading Kendall and some thought the Jets should have kept Jordan and some thought that Abraham should have been signed and on and on. But express the opinion that Pennington should be the QB and you get vilified and hit with personal insults and asked to "leave." If you don't like the thread don't read it.
And let's forget about stats and Pennington and go by what you see with Clemens. I saw a QB with no accuracy, no pocket presence, and no ability to read defenses. I saw a QB play a game against the Chiefs that was an embarassment to NFL football. One where two QBs couldn't complete a ten yard pass and were putting dents in the turf. You don't think stats matter, but there's one stat that means everything to you - how hard the Qb throws as measured by a radar gun. If the QB throws hard, you love him. Forget about smarts and accuracy or points on the board or moving the team. Just throw hard and put up a good 60 yard pass once a game to "keep the defense honest." I bet Jeff George was your favorite QB of all time. He might be available to back up Clemens next year.
I'm sorry. They're also known as "Idiot Points" for their over-reliance on passing percentage, making West Coast QBs look better than everyone else in the statbooks.
4.8 Million dollars vs 445,000 dollars next year. Neither of them get a pass but Pennington is the equivlant of the director of the mortage division at Merril Lynch and deserves to get his ass canned.
Most of those stats were not rookie stats however, I agree with your premise about the rule changes which have increased passer rating along with many more teams using a variation of the WCO and slot recievers which has made the passing game much safer than it used to be. I also think passer rating is a highly flawed stat that doesn't accurately measure QB's against each other since teams have completely different Offensive philosophy's which may skew away from a high passer rating.
I think Clemens deserves another chance. QBs need time to develop and we just don't know how good he can be. That said, here are my criticisms of him: 1. He doesn't have a good pocket presence. I've seen him start to scramble too early or hold the ball too long a bit too often. Is this teachable? Some say it's inborn, others say it just takes time. One thing I know is that better OL play will significantly improve this. 2. He doesn't sell the play-action very well. Say what you will about Chad, but this is one area where he excels. It's just a shame that we didn't have a running game to use it this season. This is one of those things that just requires a lot of film study and practice, so hopefully KC is a hard worker and can learn this skill. 3. He locks in too early. This is definitely a skill that can be learned. Again, something that requires practice and hard work. All this talk about his inaccuracy isn't as significant in my opinion. A lot of the passes were dropped and on top of that, we've been a bit spoiled by Chad's accuracy. That's one thing that definitely improves from year one to year two.
CP was 1 and 7. KC was 3 and 5. Who was more successful this year. Did CP QB rating produce any wins. Were there any dropped paases for real scores when CP was in there. Were there major, clutch choke artistry when CP was in there. For all his veteran leadership he gave us 1 win. KC only played 8 games and cooked up 3 wins with the same groceries..
Another forum for Chad lovers to justify that he is better being the the QB for the Jets next year. DAMN, you can tell who has been a Jet fan for a couple of years compaired to the rest of us that's been dealing with this shit for over 20 and longer.. We even said it when KC started, if he had a bad start all these Chad lovers would be complaning, guess what, you did. Give KC a chance with a full season next year, because he is still better being a ok QB then Chad being his best throwing 5 yard dumps..
I've been a Jet fan for over 40 years. I experienced the glory years with Namath, the dismal 70's, the incredible disappointment in the 80s, and the terrible early 90's. I can tell you that through all that, compared to all that crap, the Jets from 01-06 Jets were entertaining, enjoyable, and successful (relatively). I'd much rather play meaningful games in December and have a 10-6 team in the playoffs than this season, which was over by early October. Pennington was a large part of that success.
Just for the record I have been a Jets fan going on 34 years. A couple things in this thread crack me up.... Chad gets WR's killed? Who got Coles hurt this year? What did KC do against the Steelers and Chiefs that was so impressive? We were lucky we even won these games the way he played Why did Chad go from the NFL Come Back player of the year (and 10-6/playoffs) to a "bust" this year? Could it be the same crappy team around him that KC gets a pass for? Chad has had two major surgeries on his throwing shoulder not to mention the pins in his left hand and two of the best long passes that were thrown and completed this year on this team were by Chad....oh that's right he can not throw over 5 yards. And KC is the young healthy stud with the big gun. I hope KC is the real deal. I will make this prediction...the KC fans on here will be very fair-weathered. If KC does not look good next year they will jump of his band wagon so fast you won't know what hit you. Good luck Chad - you deserve better than this. Let's all hope KC is the answer.
There's another double standard for you. When the Jets were winning games in 04 and 06, the wins that Pennington delivered did not matter. It was more about style points. All we heard was that he didn't throw hard or that he couldn't beat tough defenses. He go no credit for the Pittsburgh playoff game, which the Jets should have won, because he didn't put up big numbers. Now the Clemens crew wants to look at wins and losses and ignore everything else, including his lack of production ( he led the team on something like 11 scoring drives in 95 possessions), his horrible TD to Int ratio, and the overall dismall performance of the offense. Are the Rams looking to replace Bulger? He had an absolutely horrible year. Look it up. Why isn't he being traded? The Bengals had a very disappointing year. Is Palmer on the block? If you want to talk wins and losses, since 2002, Pennington is 32-29 in games he has started with three playoff appearances and two playoff wins. All other Jet QBs in the same time period with the same players are 11-24 with no playoff appearances or even winning seasons.
Does anyone else think it's amazing that 6 of the 7 worst passers are Pac-10 QB's and 3 of 7 are from Oregon???
Good luck Chad you deserve better then this?? Better then what?? How much longer would have you kept CP in, another 3 years, we been dealing with his 5 yard dumps down the field for years now. Defenses knew what he can do. Damn!!!!!!! I hope he does well anywhere he goes, but we needed a change, whether KC is the guy or not, who know's, but give him a whole season to find out. Putting Chad for starting QB is rediculas.
