So, the reason Rivera's deal hasn't been announced is because he is still trying to squeeze another year out of the Yankees. Doesn't he realize he has already done that and that he should have never been signed for more then two? If he doesn't watch out he may be pitching somewhere else for about 8 million a year if he's lucky.

I don't care what the average ticket price for the other teams is. If the Mets are gonna raise prices they should be spending $$$ not putting an even worse team on the field than what they had last year and they sucked last year too!!!

Oh well. That article was in the news the day I posted it here. Blame them and their yellow ragged journalism.

You are like the traffic cop that makes a living giving out tickets on the corner all the time. The Sox have a 6 million dollar luxury tax. So he mis-calculated some salaries and bonus. The Yankees pay a 23 million dollar tax. Those are the only two teams over the luxury tax threshold.

Thanks to Joe quoting it, I got this nugget of dumb from Don. The Yankees spent more JUST FOR CLEMENS in luxury tax than the Sox spent total. And they were under at the beginning of the year, but the trade for Gagne and signing minor league guys, along with something I forgot, the money they had to pay for Renteria, put them SLIGHTLY over. It's still a huge gap.

EDIT: I just looked up the numbers. The Sox had an opening day payroll of $143,026,214. The luxury tax limit for this year was $148,000,000. So until they added up the bonuses and other things I mentioned, they WERE in fact under the limit.

Some Yankees tidbits to chew on:

I wasn't even aware that Vizcaino signed anywhere. Ah well.

We could really use some relief help. Anyone have any news on guys like Ohlendorf? Anyone think Igawa could be an option out of the pen?

Interesting. If it's already playoffs time, and it's only a calf injury, he should have ample time to heal before February. Could the Yankees now be considering sending him to the Twins?

I really hope not. Melky I can live with giving up, but Cano is going to be a #3 hitter at some point in his career. A middle of the lineup of Jeter, Cano, ARod would be pretty formidable.

However, if the deal was Melky and Cano for Santana, taking Hughes out of the equation, I might have to seriously consider that. (Actually, I probably would take it before the Twins had a chance to reconsider.)

So they were under the limit...

    ...until they were over it.

    Gotcha.

My point was that they were under the limit during the season, when I made the claim that they were under.
