It was announced officially that three current Jet players were named Pro Bowl Alternates: -Nick Mangold - center We have the anchor for our line for the next decade. This guys gets better and better. He's Pro Bowl starter potential for years to come. -Kerry Rhodes - safety IMO was the best in the NFL last year and was snubbed. Was down the first half of 2007 but has picked it up in the last third of the season. We need to lock up this playmaker and leader...Pro Bowler for years to come. -Leon Washington - RB/KR Leon made it as a KR but is a great 3rd down or Change of Pace guy - and we need to keep him long term. Our David Meggett... These guys didn't make it, but will certainly make the all rookie team: -Darrell Revis - CB Our #1 pick started slow after a hold out but has come on. As one article said he's already the best athlete at CB in the NFL, and he's learning well...did a job with Moss this past week. Will be the #1 shut down corner in the NFL for years IMO -David Harris - LB Makes our FO look brilliant by trading up for Revis (known) and Harris (not as well known) who has shown he's a tackling machine. When he hits you - you get hit hard and STAY hit. Love him in the middle - and he calls signals as a rookie. Future starting Pro Bowl MLB for years... This is quite a core isn't it?
D'Brick- not so much. When he's improved his blocking to a greater degree and his game can flourish with a better LG next to him, I'll be inclined to add him on the list. Cotch, absolutely, though he's been hampered by inconsistent QB play this year.
I actually think Cotchery has shown to be an incapable #1 WR, sort of like Chrebet was. When Coles is healthy and playing, Cotchery has the ability to explode because defenses arent focused on him and he is good enough that he can dominate any 1 on 1 coverage... however he's not good enough to take on an opposing defenses #1 corner... just not enough seperation. A top flight #2 receiver I think.
Our best young players are as follows in my opinion C - Nick Magnold LT - D'Brick RB - Leon Washington S - Kerry Rhodes WR - Jerricho Cotchery CB - Darrelle Revis LB - David Harris
Agreed, except that these are really our only good players, young or otherwise. I've actually been pleasantly surprised by Hobson's play the last two years. And I still love Coles and TJones. I like Baker too. That about covers everyone worth keeping around.
I feel like Leon can't improve that much more as a RB, and he'll only get slower as a KR. Maybe we should trade him while he has high value and use Justin Miller to return kicks and punts again.
I agree that Cotch is not a number one receiver..I don't think he has the speed. I think Baker should be on the list. I have been impressed with him and he is a great blocker. I ordered my Harris jersey before the season started and people thought I was retarded..but he was a beast in college and is only getting better. I couldn't have been happier about how teh draft worked out last year.
FS - Rhodes LT - D'Brick C - Mangold #2 RB/KR/PR - Leon #2 WR - Cotchery CB - Revis ILB - Harris I have no idea on DRob. His cap hit would be huge if we cut or traded him no? OLB - Thomas - I still think he'd be solid if someone good was across from him.
He is a decent receiver, a tough guy who blocks. Ideally he is a slot receiver because he lacks real speed. He has trouble getting separation from man coverage.
I'm not sure about this. People have said pretty much the exact same thing about Willie Parker and Brian Westbrook. Now, they are one of the most explosive backs in the league. Granted, they won't get 40 touches a game, but as long we have a decent spell back and a good o-line, we would be fine.
Cotchery is a fine as a #2 reciever, and he's great after the catch. He the TJ H. to Coles' Chad Johnson (except older and not as much a playmaker)...but we probably need a new CJ soon enough.
Vilma is still young and a great player, just too bad Mangini was not creative enough to work with him in keeping up his production
I left out Miller due to his injury. He's another good prospect - if he is smart enough to learn to play. He has the physical tool - not the intangibles. Opposite corner is D'Brick - has the intangibles but not the physical tools. I have heard some say he isn't working hard enough in the weight room, and doesn't play mean enough. He's been man handled at times - and this is a concern. I just don't think he'll ever be better than above average at best - and certainly not a Pro Bowl LT - what you would hope for out of the #4 overall pick. I like Cotch - but as many have said he's a complimentary player - not a star. He can shine at times, but needs an opposite who can burn d-backfields - a future replacement for Coles. I know we'll be up high in the draft - and there are no top 5 WR's this year - but I'd really like to try and get one to take some pressure off of our QB and Running Game in 2008 and beyond.
Huh? D'Brick is 23 and would have been a top 5 pick had he come out as a junior too. The guy lacks physical tools? His athleticism at his position is amazing. I think long term he's fine, and it's not like he hasn't done his job. He absolutely dominated Jason Taylor, and then shut down Suggs, Schobel, Osi, and Cole in a row. LT's don't even hit their prime until their mid to late 20's. The fact that D'Brick has held his own and even dominated at times is pretty kickass. As his metabolism slows, his weight will be easier to keep on and we just might have us a Pro Bowl LT.
I was reading this thread and wondering why no one said Vilma. Of course he is a great player and young too.
I still don't know why people are so down on D'Brick. I've have been extremely impressed with him this year. I have seen very few mistakes. Especially considering he is basically anchoring the entire left side of the line.
Exactly. Take Eric Steinbach away from Joe Thomas and you'd see a huge regression. D'Brick has basically been doing that all year now...and he's still be pretty solid.
