First off and most important is the team played hard for Mangini and for their own respect. That shows me they still respect their coach and they still respect themselves. We have three wins and you haven't heard any complaints from the players about the coach or any complaints from players about other players. That shows this team is sticking together. Normally when your coach makes so many mistakes or when one side of the ball, specifically the offense, is so inept it can cause division between the team but that hasn't been the case with the Jets. Mangini still controls the ship even though it went badly off course this season. That said the core of this team that sticks together should be able to use this as a growing experience the type of thing that you remember for a long time and you work your ass off to make sure it doesn't happen again. I expect everyone especially Mangini to take a step back this offseason and really look at themselves in the mirror and I expect different results next season. So I'm sure everyone will say that if it wasn't for the weather we would have lost by 50 because the Patriots are great, and Brady is handsome, and Belichick is angry, but we know thats not the case. Belichick hates Mangini for a reason and it's because he's threatened by him. We beat them on their field last year and we played them tough again today when our team was supposed be as down and out as any team can be. We were supposed to be defeated by Bill and the mighty Patriots before we even stepped on the field but instead we played 60 minutes with the team that is being called the greatest in history and didn't back down. Its clear the Jets don't fear the Patriots and they don't fear them in their own building so it may take us a few years to get the talent on this team to beat them when it counts but I actually believe Mangini will get this to where it needs to be. Lets not forget what they were saying about Belichick in Cleveland. Lets not make the same mistake here and lose Mangini before he has a chance to prove what he can do.
I posted this in another thread but here it is again... Seeing the Jets play today you can see that they play hard for coach Mangini and he obvioulsy hasn't lost the team. That is a huge feat given their record. Not with that said Mangini has to make some changes to the coaching staff and we need to add a lot of pieces of both sides of the ball. More so on offense, but the defense has some obvious holes also. Heres my list of things the Jets need to do in the offseason to head in the right direction to be a Super Bowl contender someday with Mangini... 1. Draft a Franchise QB- Say what you want about other aspects of the team but this is what the Jets have lacked since Namath. They need their own Manning, Brady, or Favre to build around. We will obviously have a top 5 pick and we need to go get Brohm, whatever it takes. If we have to move up we can deal Vilma with Harris playing so well. Seeing Clemens play, there are no signs he will be a starting QB in the league. I know he was a 2nd Round pick but the Jets have to bite the bullet and admit it was a mistake and remedy it by taking Brohm. Nobody will be second guessing the move. 2. Draft a Defensive End- The Jets have absolutely no pass rush. The only time they get after the QB is when they bring the house. Ellis is finished and we have nobody else to rush the QB. Having someone who can sack the QB without blitzing obviously helps out other areas of the defense. Now with that said they cant draft a DE in the 1st Round...especially in the top 5. There are rumors they like Howie Longs son who plays in Virginia. Big mistake if they draft him instead of a QB. They can get a quality pass rusher in the 2nd round. 3. RG/RT- Since giving away Kendall, the Jets right side has been horrendous. They cant run block or pass protect. They can fill these voids either in Free Agency or in the draft. 4. DT- Jets fans know what a disaster Dwayne Robertson has been know and we all cant wait for him to exit left. He is vastly undersized and it shows in how our run defense has been over the years. We need a huge, athletic tackle to battle in the trenches. Again we can fill this through the draft or free agency. 5. RB- Now I know we have Thomas Jones for only one season but we have to honestly decide if he is going to be the long term answer in New York. he will be 30 soon enough and that is the beginning of the end for RBs. I know the Jets were extremely interested in Michael Turner and he will be an unrestricted free agent. Tough call but since the Jets gave up next to nothing to get Jones they need to go get Turner and let him take charge of the offense with a new QB and they will grow together. Turner will be a top 10 back when given the chance. 6. WR- Cotchery is a great WR but he is no #1. Coles has been a warrrior for the Jets but he has been banged up this season and he is getting up there in age. They need to bring in a playmaker at WR desperately. 7. Coaches- Schottenheimer and Sutton are extremely suspect as offensive and defensive coordinators. Schottenheimer has been very conservative since day one. Most Jets fans thought it was because of Pennington but since Clemens took over its the same story. Some of his decisions have been god awful and he needs to re-evalute what he is trying to do on offense. I am not saying he needs to go, but Mangini needs to seriously review the offense with him and overhaul it. As far as Sutton goes, he needs to go. I think for the most part, Mangini has already taken charge of the defense since the bye week and Sutton is only DC but name only. Rumors are Monte Kiffin will be joining his son in Oakland paving the way for Ryan to come to the Jets. Remember Ryan was rumored to be the Jets DC before Mangini named Sutton. Ryan would be a huge sigining for the defense.
I agree with the fact that the team is sticking together. But, when you are in the red zone 4 times and only come away with 3 points it is hard to win football games. Bad offensive play calling. Today was another abyssmal day for our offensive line who let another QB get injured. Except for Mangold and Ferguson; the rest have got to be replaced - maybe keep Bender, too. Adrien Clarke is a disgrace to his position. Elam fell asleep on that punt when he forgot that NE actually tries to rush the punter. I know Elam likes to hit hard, but somebody better light a candle under this guy's ass and tell him if you don't stay awake and give 100% for 60 minutes than it's over for you. This year has just been sooooooooooo frustrating and soooooo disappointing.
Is it the coach leaving points on the field or the players? Was it Mangini's fault Brad Smith can't throw a 10 yard pass to a wide open baker? Was it his fault McCareins can't catch? Or was it his fault Nugent missed a 35 yard field goal? Listen Mangini has definitely made mistakes this season but today I had no problem with how he called the game. He pulled out all the stops because he knew if he played it straight the offense can't score anyway so he went out and tried some new things. Did I love the playcalling no, but I can see what he was thinking.
D played well...not great but well. Maroney/Faulk ran for over 100 so what can you say. No pressure on Brady at all. We were not going to win so at least "damage" Brady, Moss, Welker, someone! The Pats punched us in the face more then we did them. O-Line still miserable and Jones ran for nada. If we don't get a solid line and fullback established to run the I formation we have no shot next year except we'll be 8-8 because of schedule.
So I guess there would be no such thing as the Jets playing great d. They held the best offensive team in the league too 6 points.
Thank you. I don't like that he went back to Smith for a possession in the 4th quarter at quarterback, but other than that, what did he do wrong? The only thing I can think of is that he shouldn't have kicked the FG, and he should have gone for it. Other than that, I don't know.
Few think that Brohm is a "franchise" QB and that pick would be questioned by almost everyone except you. D-rob is not a bust no matter what you think. He has played very well, but with NO rush on the edge he deals with double and triple teams every play. We need an OLB more than DE. Get a really good OLB that has to be accounted for, and it will free Robertson up to penetrate.
I don't believe in moral victories. Just get the best possible pick and pick the best available player, make some free agent signings this year instead of selling us on Andre Wadsworth. Now that the love affair is over for Mangini, we can look at the team objectively and build for a possible playoff season next year
I agree with the beginning post about how the team hasn't quit and seem to still believe in Mangini. I don't think we need to draft a QB in the 1st round. I saw mangold said they are using the same playbook since Pennington which doesn't seem to be Clemens strength. Have a nice backup ready and let Clemens see what we can do in a offense tailored to him. Remember everyone wanted him to play because he wasn't. Once we get a good D line and an OLB which I think all of which will be addressed this offseason. Suggs for OLB via free agency. Long via the draft and a NT late in the draft. I know everyonbe hates D-Rob but he hasn't been terrible and Harris still looks good with him in there. So in the draft we go early on defense, middle we pick up o-line and late look for NT. Unless Mcfadden is available. I hope we don't pass on him
To the poster who started this thread... Thank you man... Thank you. This is one hell of a thread and I love to see Jet fans with hope for the future. BB was not the greatest coach in Cleveland... But thats what makes him such a great coach today... Some say its Brady, I agree... But at the same time... BB learned from his mistakes and had the chance tocorrect them. I feel Mangini is going to be one hell of a coach one day, he just needs time to get a O-Line and the right players for this 3-4 D. If you ask me, he has done a great job at giving players such as Rhodes and Cotchery a chance to make plays... He drafted Ferguson and Mangold for a reason... He knows the trenches win games. Why else would he use our first 2 picks ont he O-Line? He drafted a play maker in L.Washington in the 4th round He went our and got a feature back in Thomas Jones And yes... We may only have 3 wins but we have had a chance to win almost every game He knows how to win, he will win, lets just hope its with the Jets
Lets all celebrate “moral victories” and complete mediocrity and Guess what, I do. I know that one day the Jets and I are gonna to get married on top of a mountain, and there's going to be flutes playing and trombones and flowers and garlands of fresh herbs. And we will dance till the sun rises. And then our children will form a family band. And we will tour the countryside and you won't be invited. And anyone who is not on board with that may just want to recognize that this team, CS QB, FO, owner, stadium, luck and future draft picks and FA signings under all before noted will only suck balls forever. This fucking team makes me want to puke.
the old fashioned way was to always take the points. it just seemed to work. somehow, by the end of the game, those FGs you kicked on 4th and an inch somehow kept you close enough to win at the end. i actually believe bill parcells started all of this gambling. not that i am knocking him. i liked the guy. but it seems to me that this trend of going for it so often on 4th and whatever started with him.
