The Mets don't have anything they want unless they are willing to give up Reyes or Wright and I can't see that happening.
How do you know what Minny wants, there have been numerous reports that Minny loves Gomez and Fernando Martinez and have varying degrees of interest in the Mets pitching prospects..
Yeah, but unless one of these teams gets stupid why would they want to make the trade now? None of the teams being discussed "need" Santana from the start of the year. As long as no one gets stupid and steps over the line and gives up way too much a trade isn't going to happen anytime soon.
Well, you're right. Nobody knows for sure what they want. What I read is that they want Cabrerra more then any of those 3. However, if Wright or Reyes were dangled they would jump.
The Yankees might need him if Pettitte retires. Everybody assumes the kids will be good but who knows until they actually start pitching.
I don't think the Mets have the top quality prospects that other teams have but I do think they would have more of a willingness to move their prospects. I think Omar is desperate enough to do just about anything to get Santana, I wouldn't completely rule out him moving Reyes to get it done, although I do think that is unlikely and no chance that Wright gets moved. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't get traded in the next month or so, there is no advantage at all to the Twins holding on to him into the season.
Why does everyone assume that the Twins will get more now? If on July 25th the Yankees are 3 games out in the division and 5 in the wildcard or something, and Hughes just went on the DL, you really don't think they would give more then than they would now? If a team thinks it's only one stud pitcher from a title run halfway through the year, they might bet the farm for a "win now" type situation, especially if they can then lock him up long term.
Yes, I think they won't jump in July. Why would anybody give up that much for a three month rental? Oh, wait Boston gave up a ton for Gagne. Well, why would anybody else? And he still has to agree to any trade in July. Why would he waive his no trade clause then when he would be a free agent in 3 months?
Waiting till the deadline also puts the Twins in a rough spot. What happens if at the deadline they are still contending for the playoffs? Do they still trade him and piss of their fans that are paying for their new stadium or do they keep him and lose him for nothing in 3 months?
Yes, I agree. He will be traded in the next couple of weeks, probably before the winter meetings are over next week.
Haha, yes, the Sox gave up a "ton" for Gagne. At the time, it was seen as a huge ripoff in Boston's favor. Granted, Gagne didn't pitch well for the Sox, but they certainly didn't give up much to get him. And if he's willing to waive his no-trade now, why not then? If he signs an extension with some team now or at the deadline it's the same thing.
Another article which seems to say the Yankees have the edge unless Boston gives in. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/11/28/santana.sweepstakes/index.html
The whole deal might just get blown up if the propesed Twins/Rays trade goes through since the Twins would get Delmon Young who is far and away a much better player than Melky.
Didn't they give up a good young pitcher and two other prospects? Wasn't that pitcher 4-0 even? Seems like a ton to me but we must use different types of scales. At the deadline he is only 3 months from a bidding war. The season is pretty much over so the risk of injury is pretty much gone. I don't expect you to understand how these things work but that is why.
No, it would just mean they would want Cano and Kennedy instead of Cabrerra and Kennedy. Not much chance of them ever getting Cano though. Nice to have lots of cheap young talent. Young is also a head case, isn't he? I doubt there is any chance the Twins will make a trade for him.
Cano and Kennedy is even more ridiculous that Cabrera and Kennedy. Cano is an all-star already and proven. Once Cano's name is mentioned, I would drop out.
Gabbard is at BEST a number 3 starter somewhere else, in Boston he was a 5th starter/long reliever. David Murphy would have never started more than 10 games a year in Boston, and the other prospect is a 17 year old outfielder. That really isn't a lot for what was the best reliever available at the time. And you claiming ANYONE doesn't understand how anything in baseball works is downright laughable. Teams give up more in trades that happen at the deadline because that's when a team has a sense of how close it is to a title run. Look at deals like Heathcliff Slocumb for Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek, Scott Kazmir for Zambrano, Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson, Randy Johnson for Freddy Garcia and Carlos Guillen... the list is huge. As for him waiving the no trade clause, what difference does it make to him where he finishes the season? If he wants to be a free agent, all he has to do is not sign an extension with the team he goes to. It could very well happen that the Twins will be out of the race, and he sees a shot at a championship somewhere like Boston or New York, and agrees to be traded there. He'll have a figure for is contract in his mind, present it to the new team, and either sign for that or just finish out the season there with a shot at a ring. Whether or not that team still wants to make the trade is another matter, but waiting until the break is actually MORE likely to make him want to waive the no-trade because he'll know by then if the team he's headed to has a shot at winning it all.
Geezus, Don, a little discretion please. That's Jon Heyman! It's like putting a pen in Hank Steinbrenner's hand and asking him to write a column on the current status. It's that kind of objectivity that gives us journalist gems like, "If Ellsbury remains out of the package, and Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein is known to be enamored of him, the Yankees could be the favorite to win the services of Santana. . . . " Umm. . . righty-o. I don't doubt that the Twins want Ellsbury. And, I don't doubt that the Red Sox would be loath to give him up. I see the Red Sox in this thing only for the purpose of keeping the price high for the Yankees. Much as I would like Santana in a Red Sox uniform, the Sox don't have the need New York does.
dude Ive been having htis argument with my brother and father for two weeks now. I agree 100% with you and they both look at me like I am retarded
I still can't get over the Red Sox/Jets fan... I feel like the combo should cause some kind of natural disaster
